The Oblivion Walker

Chapter 12: The Two of Us

Kali stood besides Dice, who was sitting on the ground next to him. He seldom sat down outside of eating or being told to sit. Unlike most people, he hadn't ever seemed to have gotten tired or bored yet, he simply was.

Dice grinned whilst looking at his monotone friend. They'd learn the neat trick of smiling earlier, but after that they never seemed to ever do it again. He wondered what that wss about.

"Tch, copying isn't good enough, it has to be reaaaal! You should only smile if you're truly happy! Are you happy right now Kali?"

"Yes. I'm happy."

"Alright. If you ever feel like smiling, smile, but never make yourself smile."

Kali himself was happy. She'd told him to smile if he ever was truly happy. But then she also told him to only smile if he ever felt like smiling. Before this, June had said a couple of contradictory statements and would later clarify and rescinded statements that she didn't seem to find right. So he just decided to follow whatever came latest as most correct…?

Oh well. That seemed to be the case. Not a soul knows except for Kali.

"Hey Kali."

"Yes?"

"Why don't ya smile?" Nevermind.

"Could you elaborate?"

"I mean like, ya smiled that one time as a trick. And well, you're always happy right? Is smiling hard or do ya just never feel like smiling?"

"Smiling is not something I notice wanting to do. Should I smile whenever I'm happy?"

"Nah, there's no need. That's pretty interesting."

"Why is that?"

"Most people smile when happy. But I think you'd lose some of that Kali essence if ya had a permanent smile plastered on your face." Dice smiled.

"What does that mean?"

"Meh. It's vague. Too vague for me to explain well. I guess like charm? Essence… like… a vital component of who you are?"

"Is me not smiling charming?" He asked, without any tone of offense.

"Oh, nah it's just… more familiar to me I suppose."

"That makes sense. Not smiling could be a core component of who I am."

Dices back straightened, "…You think so?"

"I don't know if it is vital. It is definitely a component."

"Why do you think you don't smile?"

"I think it could be because I'm not human."

"Nonsense." Dice laid in the grass. "Any other guesses?"

"Maybe because I've never smiled before until then."

"Oh. Yeah, that's true. You have amnesia right?"

"I do not know. I remember what and where I was before arriving here. It was nothing. I could be, I don't think so."

"Well. If ya don't remember smiling, it would make sense for you to not smile? Never smiling before also makes sense… you think we're ever gonna figure out where you came from?"

"No. It's somewhere far away."

"Well, how do you know that?"

"I don't know. It is vague." Dice noticed the use of the word vague.

"Heh. Alrighty. Ya know. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like you."

"Is that so?"

"Yeah, you say where you came from and what you were was nothing right?"

"Yes."

"Well, fun fact. Theseu eyes of mine are special. Besides having super bad vision… I can see other stuff."

"What other stuff?"

"Well…" Dice laughs a bit. "…It's vague. Let's seeeeee… nope I can't describe it. But if I had to say… it describes everything? Yeah. My normal vision is bad, but this type of vision describes everything that another person wouldn't be able to see. Like… I think I can see cause and effect in a way that others would call fate, or less so fate, and more like the draw of fate. Connections, pull, and what is true? I'm not sure."

Kali nodded.

"That's the basic gist of it, but it doesn't describe you. You're like a void in this maelstrom of color. I can't tell if that means you're actually nothing or if you're made of something dark. You affect nothing either. I can see sorta wisps of of things interacting with other things but with you, it's just not there."

Kali thought and nodded, "What do you think it means?"

"Let's seee…. It doesn't make sense since you're a physical thing. I mean. I can touch you and stuff, and you're like a deity in terms of strength even without magic or qi. I think it means… you're special?"

Kali nodded, "Alright."

"…" Dice laughed at his lackluster response, "Well it doesn't matter. You're still my best friend man!"

"Thanks."

"Me too right? I'm your best friend?" Dice asked in a jokingly exaggerated desperate tone, "Right???"

"Yes." Ah. Dice sometimes wondered why he even bothered joking around with em when Kali typically took everything extremely literally. Plus, Dice can never tell if he is serious or not. But then again, he never tells his own lies.

But even if he wasn't lying, it didn't mean anything, because he didn't know anything. Dice softened his expression and just smiled weakly, "Hahhhh. Alright dude."
