The protagonist who hates losers is so sweet to me.

Chapter 29 - Danger.

There’s nothing a good fight can’t solve. As the loser, Yu Xiaoxue had to obediently follow Song Xinqi’s rules: no silly expressions and no snuggling.
Yu Xiaoxue was very upset. She didn’t want this wretched body; she wanted to return to her own.
With that settled, Yu Qing breathed a sigh of relief. As long as there were no conflicts, everything would be fine.
“Alright, now that this is resolved, should we get going?”
Nearby zombies were attracted to them, so they quickly extinguished the fire and continued their journey.
Yu Qing wasn’t sure how Song Xinqi, in his snow leopard form, navigated, but he just had to follow. Yu Xiaoxue was ordered to walk upright, wobbling behind. Midway, she sneaked forward to hold Yu Qing’s hand.
Whenever the snow leopard turned back, Yu Xiaoxue would instantly let go and keep a little distance from him. The snow leopard glanced coldly at the two, noticing Yu Qing’s weariness and flushed face.
A wave of frustration surged in the snow leopard’s chest. So, it was fine for Yu Xiaoxue to ride him, but when it came to him, no matter how tired he got, he wouldn’t make a sound?
As they walked, the snow leopard turned and knelt before Yu Qing.
Yu Qing tilted his head, puzzled. “Are you tired?”
The snow leopard looked up at him in exasperation and gestured for him to get on his back.
Suspicious, he climbed onto the snow leopard’s back. Once he was settled, the snow leopard stood up steadily and continued walking.
Yu Xiaoxue widened her eyes in disbelief: So, you get to snuggle, but I can’t?
Yu Qing couldn’t shake the feeling that a pair of resentful eyes were watching him from behind, but he didn’t dare let Yu Xiaoxue get on as well.
It was a peculiar situation, to say the least.
After walking for half a day, they came across a forest. A forest meant potential food sources. They found a cave and, after ensuring it was unoccupied, Song Xinqi instructed the other two to stay while he went hunting.
Once Song Xinqi’s figure disappeared from sight, Yu Xiaoxue immediately reverted to her snow leopard nature, rolling on the ground and placing her chin on Yu Qing’s leg, whining softly.
Amused, Yu Qing patted her head. “Our little Yu Xiaoxue has had it tough.”
Yu Xiaoxue, enjoying the attention, rolled over and lifted her chin, eyes half-closed.
After a moment’s hesitation, he began scratching Yu Xiaoxue’s chin. Seeing this typically fierce and unapproachable man displaying large feline behavior made him feel dizzy. He wasn’t sure if it was due to the body he was in or because of Yu Xiaoxue.
A faint wind rustled through, as if something was moving rapidly through the forest. Hearing the noise, they quickly separated, and Yu Xiaoxue, in her tension, fell back, hitting her head.
Yu Qing couldn’t help but laugh. Why did this feel like a secret affair?
So, the question was: Was he having an affair with Yu Xiaoxue or with Song Xinqi’s body? The thought was too bold. He imagined Song Xinqi’s murderous expression and didn’t dare think further.
Suddenly, they heard strange, noisy sounds, as if coming from a distance.
The sounds grew closer, and they recognized them as the roars of many animals combined.
Yu Xiaoxue stood up abruptly and went to check the cave entrance.
In the distance, dust clouds rose, and the noises drew nearer. Birds scattered, and beasts fled.
A faint smell of blood permeated the air, and the sounds drew nearer. Amidst the roars, footsteps and gunshots could be heard. A few figures emerged from the dust.
“There’s a cave over there! Run!”
Yu Qing pulled Yu Xiaoxue back, shrinking to doll size and hiding in a corner of the cave. The dim light made it hard to spot them at first glance.
The smell of blood intensified. One person carrying an injured comrade reached the cave first, placing the wounded on the ground and shouting to those behind, “Old Cha, get in here!”
“I’ll distract them!”
The one who made it into the cave yelled, “Old Cha, don’t do anything stupid!”
Birds screeched, and beasts roared, the cacophony overwhelming as it drew closer. Yu Qing held his breath, listening intently.
“Damn it, come at me!” The rearguard emptied his machine gun, angering the mutated beasts who then chased after him, ignoring those hiding in the cave.
The sounds of gunfire and footsteps faded. Yu Qing’s heart raced as he looked at the two newcomers.
In the dim light, he saw half a body in the shadows. One leg was severed at the middle, blood gushing from the wound and pooling on the ground, seeping toward him.
The other person, kneeling beside the injured man, removed his jacket to wrap around the severed leg, his voice choked with emotion. “Hang in there, squad leader. I need to stop the bleeding first.”
The blood crept closer. Yu Qing shifted, accidentally stepping on a dry branch. The sharp crack echoed through the cave.
“Who’s there!” the man shouted, abandoning the wound to cautiously scan the cave, gun at the ready.
Reaching the corner, he swung his gun towards it, discovering the two hidden figures.
Yu Xiaoxue stood protectively in front of Yu Qing, glaring at the man, muscles tensed as if ready to pounce.
The man, seeing the hidden pair, lowered his gun slightly. “Were you already hiding here?”
Yu Xiaoxue didn’t move, and Yu Qing nodded slightly.
The man lowered his gun further. “I thought you were mutated beasts or zombies. Sorry for scaring you. We ran into a beast horde and had to hide here.”
Yu Xiaoxue growled menacingly, but Yu Qing gently grabbed his arm and nodded again.
“What’s the situation over there?” a weak voice asked from the shadows.
The man sniffled, wiping away tears with his arm. “There are two survivors here.”
The weak voice responded, “Come out. We’re humans, too. We mean no harm, just looking for shelter.”
Yu Qing pulled Yu Xiaoxue out.
In front of them was a young man with a buzz cut, wearing a camouflage shirt, standing tall with a rifle in his arms.
He returned to the injured man’s side, rewrapping the makeshift bandage around the stump, tightening it with a belt. The injured man bit his lip, suppressing any sound of pain.
Yu Qing and Yu Xiaoxue sat to the side, observing their disciplined actions. Once the bleeding was controlled, the injured man drifted into unconsciousness.
“Are you military?” Yu Qing asked.
The buzz-cut man replied, “I’m Peng Shu, and this is our squad leader. We’re new recruits, still in training. With zombies everywhere, the military sent out everyone they could. We’re one of those squads.”
“I’m Yu Qing, and he…is Yu Xiaoxue. What’s happening outside?”
Peng Shu glanced at Yu Xiaoxue again. Despite his imposing figure, his name was Xiaoxue (Little Snow)? He quickly refocused. “It’s a long story. City B fell, and we were covering the evacuation of survivors. But there were too many zombies.
Only a few of us made it out. Inexperienced, we ended up here. Earlier, we encountered a beast horde. Many comrades died, leaving just me, Old Cha, and the squad leader.”
“Old Cha stayed behind to draw the beasts away.” Peng Shu’s eyes reddened again, wiping tears with his arm. “Comrade, this forest is dangerous. If you can escape, do it quickly. I’ll cover your retreat once the beasts are gone.”
“Thank you.” Yu Qing glanced at the squad leader on the ground. “But we have a companion here. I need to wait for him to return.”
“What does your companion look like? We didn’t see anyone else while escaping. When did he leave? If it’s been too long, he might not have made it.”
Yu Qing didn’t think Song Xinqi would be easily harmed, but the situation was unclear. “He’s not human; he’s a snow leopard.”
“A snow leopard?” Peng Shu was puzzled. “You mean a large, spotted white feline predator?”
“Yes, have you seen one?”
Peng Shu shook his head. “Snow leopards typically don’t appear in forests. If I’d seen one, I’d remember. But be prepared; the beasts here are all strange. Your companion might be affected too.”
Yu Qing sensed Song Xinqi’s location. If he were nearby, he’d have returned quickly, but he felt him moving farther away.
Noticing his concern, Yu Xiaoxue embraced him, trying to comfort him.
“Is he your lover?” Peng Shu asked.
“Huh?” Yu Qing snapped out of his thoughts, shaking his head quickly. “No, no, he’s my…family.”
“Oh,” Peng Shu nodded knowingly. He could tell that they were so young and already married, but staying together in the apocalypse showed their loyalty.
The apocalypse brought many strange situations. He found the combination of the two with a snow leopard odd but didn’t question it. Concerned for their companion, they seemed loyal, which he respected.
Talking was a good way to relieve tension. Peng Shu found Yu Qing’s voice soothing, helping him calm
In the tense atmosphere, chatting is the best way to relax.
Yu Qing was very talkative, whereas Yu Xiaoxue remained silent the whole time. But with Song Xinqi’s impressive appearance, even without an expression, he looked quite intimidating. Peng Shu assumed he simply didn’t like to talk.
Cold and aloof but clingy? Having never been in a relationship, he found himself developing a strange impression of “Song Xinqi.”
The two quickly became familiar with each other. Yu Qing glanced at the person lying on the ground and asked, “Is he okay? He looks pretty serious.”
“He got his leg bitten off by a mutated lion. We don’t have anything now; he can only rely on himself to pull through.”
Such a severe injury, if treated in time, there might be a chance to save him. But under the current circumstances, his fate seemed grim.
Everyone realized this possibility. Peng Shu thought he would collapse in despair, but after talking with Yu Qing, he became extraordinarily calm. It was strange; they hadn’t even discussed anything profound.
He clenched his fists, “It’s okay, even if I’m the last one left in the team, I’ll carry on for all my comrades.”
“That’s right!” Yu Qing encouraged him.
Suddenly, he felt a dizzy spell. Yu Xiaoxue supported his shoulders as he leaned back, calling out in concern.
He grasped Yu Xiaoxue’s strong arm, speaking softly, “Is something wrong with Song Xinqi?”
Peng Shu couldn’t help but stand up, “What’s wrong with you?”
“I don’t know.” Yu Qing regained his clarity after a while, sensing Song Xinqi’s position, realizing he hadn’t moved from one spot.
He intuitively felt something was wrong and stood up, “I need to find him.”
Peng Shu advised, “The beast pack probably hasn’t gone far yet. It’s dangerous outside, and you don’t even know where he is.”
Yu Qing looked weak and frail, seemingly lacking any combat ability, which made Peng Shu worry about him.
Yu Qing insisted, “I know where he is, and I know he isn’t dead. I have to find him.”
Yu Xiaoxue stood up as well, but Yu Qing said, “You stay here.”
“Roar!” Yu Xiaoxue protested.
In Song Xinqi’s body, Yu Xiaoxue was just like an ordinary human, not very smart either. It was best to keep her in a safe place.
“Be good, I’ll be back soon.” He patted Yu Xiaoxue’s head.
Her eyes showed some struggle, but she decided to obey him, nuzzling her head against his.
Peng Shu found their interaction peculiar, but seeing Yu Qing determined to leave alone, he couldn’t help but offer, “How about I go with you?”
Yu Qing turned back, “Do you have any powers? What’s your ability?”
If it was a strong offensive ability, it might be helpful.
Peng Shu looked embarrassed, “I’m an initial, no abilities yet, but I have a gun. I can protect you.”
“No need. I’ll go alone. My ability may not kill zombies or mutant beasts, but I should be able to protect myself.”
Seeing him wave and leave alone, Peng Shu felt mixed emotions. Upon first meeting, he had assumed, based on appearances, that he was the one who needed protection. But it turned out that he was the one making decisions all along.
Glancing at Yu Xiaoxue, who was still staring in the direction Yu Qing left, Peng Shu asked, “Xiaoxue, are you an initial too?”
“Roar,” Yu Xiaoxue responded.
Peng Shu was puzzled, “??”
A thought crossed his mind: could this Yu Xiaoxue be… not very smart?
Suddenly, he felt a sense of respect for Yu Qing and more affection for Yu Xiaoxue, “Don’t worry, Yu Qing will be back soon.”
Following the mental link, Yu Qing walked deeper into the forest. To avoid getting lost on the way back, he left marks along the way. He didn’t encounter any mutant animals on the road, and after walking for a long time, he saw a dilapidated courtyard ahead.
The courtyard was large, filled with cages holding various mutated animals.
The endpoint he sensed was here. He approached the gate of the courtyard, and the monkey lying in one of the cages suddenly opened its eyes and shrieked.
“Who’s there!”
A fat man ran out from behind the courtyard, looking around and seeing no one. He kicked the monkey’s cage, making the monkey scream in agony, its limbs twitching as if electrocuted.
“I just got a new treasure today. I don’t have time to deal with you now. I’ll teach you a lesson later.” The fat man kicked the cage again and turned away.
In his doll form, Yu Qing peeked out from behind the cage, watching the fat man’s direction.
The cages were full of mutated animals. It was possible that the beast pack Peng Shu encountered had something to do with this fat man. Could his new treasure be Song Xinqi?
Unable to find the snow leopard in the courtyard, he decided to sneak behind the fat man.
Behind the courtyard was a large open space, surrounded by genuinely large mutated animals: a mutated black bear, three mutated tigers, five mutated wild boars, and a mutated owl with huge wings standing beside the fat man, all staring at the large cage in the center.
Inside the cage was Song Xinqi!
The snow leopard had many whip marks on its body, but besides that strange dizziness, Yu Qing hadn’t felt any shared pain.
“I don’t believe it. Today I’ll tame you for sure!”
The fat man’s right arm was wrapped in a blue lightning, forming a glowing whip that lashed at the snow leopard.
A scar appeared on the snow leopard’s face, making his eyes look fiercer, adding to his wild, untamed beauty.
Surrounded by blue lightning, the snow leopard roared and rammed the cage, making it shake violently with a heavy sound.
The fat man snorted, forming a huge blue collar of lightning around the snow leopard’s neck. The snow leopard struggled fiercely, leaving countless scratches in the cage. The collar tightened, connecting into a thin chain held by the fat man.
“Obey me, you beast!”
The chain was yanked, pulling the snow leopard towards the cage, blue sparks flying. Even without the mental link, Yu Qing could vaguely feel the intense pain.
He clenched his fingers on the wooden door, his beautiful golden eyes flashing with anger.
Seeing the snow leopard’s will remain unbroken, the fat man angrily waved away all the mutated animals. After they left, he poured a large amount of his power, creating a massive blue net that fell onto the snow leopard.
“Roar!”
The wild electric shock didn’t make the snow leopard submit. Enduring the violent current that almost tore his muscles apart, the snow leopard tore the electric net apart.
The fat man stepped back, his arm’s blood vessels suddenly bursting, making him kneel, clutching his arm in pain.
The snow leopard’s eyes were dark and deep, looking disdainfully at the fat man outside the cage.
Though one was caged and the other free, the snow leopard seemed the more invincible.
The fat man’s arm trembled, and in his rage, he forgot his original intent to tame the snow leopard, resorting to the harshest punishment. The chaotic electricity created numerous particles in the air, forming a black pit on the ground.
“Die, you beast!”
“Boom!”
Just as the electricity was about to strike, a loud noise came from the front yard, continuous sounds making the fat man uneasy. He hurriedly withdrew his power and rushed to the front yard, “What’s happening!”
As the fat man hurried away, all the mutated animals that had been caged were now running loose, creating chaos in the yard. Some of the more aggressive ones were fighting, turning the place into a mess.
“Stop it, all of you!”
Having caused enough damage, the tiny Yu Qing sneaked to the back yard, seeing the wounded snow leopard panting in the cage.
Yu Qing, in his small form, ran quickly, squeezing into the cage and placing his hand on the snow leopard, making him small too, “Song Xinqi, are you okay? I distracted him, we need to get out.”
The tiny snow leopard didn’t move, seemingly not hearing Yu Qing’s words.
With limited time, he couldn’t afford to delay. He pushed the snow leopard’s body, sometimes using his back, exerting all his strength, “We don’t have much time, let’s go.”
“Who is it!” The fat man, enraged, ran towards the noise, followed by two barking mutated dogs.
Yu Qing quickly restored the snow leopard to its original size. The snow leopard remained motionless, this time using his paw to hide Yu Qing under his intact fur.
The mutated dogs rushed into the back yard, noses almost touching the ground in a carpet search.
“Search everywhere, find that person!”
The mutated dogs searched the entire area multiple times but only found the scent of the snow leopard.
Unable to find the culprit, the fat man vented his anger on the two dogs, whipping them with blue electric arcs, “Useless things, what’s the point of keeping you!”
The dogs howled in pain, rolling on the ground. After venting his anger, the fat man pointed to the front yard, “Go search there!”
The wounded dogs stood up, tails between their legs, whimpering as they headed to the front yard.
After the fat man left, the snow leopard released Yu Qing.
Yu Qing took hold of the snow leopard’s tail, “Let’s go.”
The snow leopard pulled its tail away and instead pushed Yu Qing outside. Yu Qing staggered, confused about why Song Xinqi was being so stubborn and getting anxious, “He’ll come back any moment now, let’s go!”
The snow leopard silently pushed him out again. When Yu Qing tried to come back in, the snow leopard pushed him away once more.
After a few attempts, the snow leopard stood up. As Yu Qing was about to come closer again, the snow leopard opened its bloody mouth and roared at him.
“Roar!!”
Yu Qing’s ears were left ringing, and he was blown several rolls away by the powerful gust.
He sat down heavily on the ground, his hair tousled by the wind. He stared at the snow leopard, his eyes still holding a deep fear of the beast.
The golden pupils dilated. He saw the cracks in the snow leopard’s wounds, and tears welled up in his eyes.
Sniffling, he stood up and tried to approach again, “Song Xinqi, what are you thinking? Hurry up and come back with me.”
The snow leopard turned its face away, its body crackling with blue arcs of electricity, its eyes showing struggle as it restrained the desire to tear everything apart.
A rough voice came from the snow leopard’s throat.
Yu Qing understood. Song Xinqi had a reason for not wanting to leave. This fat man had the ability to control mutated animals, so those beast hordes were likely under his command.
Yu Qing no longer insisted on taking the snow leopard with him. The noise from the front yard was getting louder, and seeing that the fat man was about to return, he wiped away his tears, “Wait for me. I will come back to save you.”
With that, he ran out without looking back.
