Chapter 5: Fearing She Might Never Return
"Ah!"
Lin Xu had thought of numerous ways to persuade Ji Tingyang, but the moment she opened her wardrobe the following day, her plans were quickly forgotten.
She realized she had no clothes to change into!
By the third day, Lin Xu was still wearing the same outfit she had worn upon her rebirth.
The clothes in the wardrobe were exactly as they had been twenty years ago. To Lin Xu, they seemed no different from a few days ago—she merely glanced at them before closing the wardrobe.
It wasn't until now, when she needed to change clothes, that she noticed all the garments had faded and yellowed with age. None were fit to wear out.
"What's wrong?" Hearing her scream, Ji Tingyang hurriedly rushed to her side.
Lin Xu held up a red dress with a pitiful look in her eyes as she gazed at him. "I bought this dress less than a week ago, and I've never even worn it, and now it's already ruined."
She had planned to wear it to a banquet in a few days, but now it was completely unwearable.
"All the clothes inside are unfit to wear," she said weakly.
Ji Tingyang let out a sigh of relief, thinking it was no big deal. "It's just clothes. We can buy new ones."
Lin Xu looked at him with a sorrowful expression.
Ji Tingyang quickly realized, "The bank card is in my room. I'll bring it to you later. Buy whatever you want."
Lin Xu smiled gratefully, "My son's grown up, now earning money to spoil his mother."
In the past, when she had gone shopping for banquet dresses, she would always struggle to choose between a few options, uncertain of what to pick.
Little Ji Tingyang had said, "Why not buy them all?"
Lin Xu feigned difficulty, "Our family is poor; we can't afford so many clothes. I'll have to pick just one."
The store clerk glanced at the designer handbag worth hundreds of thousands in her hand and the limited edition black card, silently processing the irony.
If this was considered poor, then they were clearly unworthy of living.
But a child, unaware of such matters, immediately grew concerned for his mother. He hugged her neck, offering comfort, "Mom, when I grow up and earn money, I'll buy you as many clothes as you want."
Lin Xu smiled and kissed him on the cheek, "You're amazing, son."
In the blink of an eye, that little child had grown up, and with great confidence told her to use his card.
Lin Xu felt tears well up in her eyes, moved by the sentiment.
After breakfast, Lin Xu stood at the door, eagerly anticipating the shopping trip ahead.
Ji Tingyang handed her the black card. "Shall I have the driver take you?"
"Sure," Lin Xu agreed without hesitation. After twenty years, she was certain she would have forgotten the way.
"How much is the limit on this card? I'd hate to max it out," she asked casually, glancing at the card.
"No limit. Spend as you like."
"Ah, truly the aura of a domineering CEO," she teased.
Ji Tingyang chuckled.
Lin Xu waved at him and turned to leave, opening the car door.
The scene was all too familiar, familiar to the point where Ji Tingyang's heart ached with a painful throb.
It felt as though the last time he had bid Lin Xu farewell was exactly like this—waving, getting into the car, and then the crash...
Then came the relatives, heartbroken, telling him that his parents had gone to heaven and would never return.
The sourness in his heart surged, and almost instinctively, he grabbed Lin Xu's arm.
"What's wrong?" Lin Xu asked, puzzled.
Ji Tingyang opened his mouth, hesitated, but said nothing.
He dared not voice his fear—that she might, like before, leave and never come back.
Lin Xu blinked, unsure if she had guessed his thoughts. She said, "Why don't you come with me? After all these years, I still don't understand much. What if someone tricks me?"
