The Return of the Void Emperor

Chapter 26: The Abyss Stirs

The tunnel's oppressive darkness deepened as the group descended further into the earth. The air grew heavier, damp and thick with the scent of mold and wet stone. Each step echoed endlessly, as though the earth itself was alive and listening. Li Tian moved at the front, his torch held high, though its flickering light barely cut through the gloom. The void within him stirred restlessly, feeding on the tension that hung in the air.

Behind him, the villagers shuffled in silence, their faces pale and hollow. The old man brought up the rear, his blade still unsheathed, though his breathing had grown shallow and ragged. Blood stained his sleeve where a gash from the earlier battle refused to clot. Yet he pressed on, refusing to show weakness.

"Stop," Li Tian said suddenly, raising his hand. The group froze.

The tunnel split ahead, branching into two passages—one narrow and twisting, the other wide and smooth. The air seemed colder near the wider path, and faint whispers echoed from its depths. The villagers huddled together, their fear palpable as they stared into the black void of each tunnel. Even the flicker of torchlight seemed unable to penetrate the shadows lingering in the wider path.

"We can't split up," the old man said, stepping forward. "But something's wrong with that one." He gestured toward the wider path.

Li Tian closed his eyes, reaching out with the void. Threads of energy pulsed from him, snaking down each tunnel like tendrils. The narrow path felt empty, stagnant—but the wider one pulsed with movement. His breath caught as the void shivered and recoiled.

"There's something down there," Li Tian said, opening his eyes. "Something old. And awake."

Murmurs broke out among the villagers, their fear rising again. One man stepped forward, his voice shaking. "We should turn back! We can't go any deeper."

"We can't go back," the old man snapped. "If those creatures aren't dead, they're digging through the rubble right now."

Li Tian didn't speak. He stared down the wide tunnel, the whispers echoing louder in his ears now. The void within him pulsed in response, hungry and eager. He clenched his fists, fighting the urge to let it loose.

"We take the narrow path," he said at last. "Move quickly and stay close."

The group hurried into the smaller passage. The walls closed in around them, forcing them to move in single file. The villagers' breaths came quick and shallow, and every scrape of their feet against the stone seemed deafening. Shadows danced along the walls, twisting and stretching like clawed fingers.

Halfway through, the whispers returned.

Li Tian froze, his torch trembling. The whispers weren't coming from behind them anymore. They were ahead.

"No," he whispered. He pressed his hand to the ground, letting the void pulse outward. The energy rippled, but instead of clarity, it brought chaos. The void recoiled, as though something else pushed against it.

The ground shook.

A deep rumble echoed through the tunnel, and cracks split the walls. Dust rained down, and the villagers screamed. Li Tian shoved the closest ones forward. "Run!"

The earth groaned as stone cracked and fell, splitting the group apart. Li Tian stumbled, his torch dropping as darkness surged in. The void howled inside him, demanding to be released.

"No," Li Tian growled. He forced it back, gritting his teeth as he clawed through the dust and debris. "Get to the end of the tunnel!"

He could hear the old man shouting orders, his blade ringing against stone. Somewhere ahead, the villagers cried out, their voices growing fainter.

Li Tian surged forward, the void lashing out instinctively. Light flared, pushing back the darkness long enough to reveal the path. He reached the end of the tunnel just as another tremor struck.

The ground split beneath him, and Li Tian fell.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

Pain brought him back. Li Tian opened his eyes to pitch blackness, his body aching from the fall. The void stirred, faint but steady. He focused on it, drawing on its energy just enough to form a faint light.

He was in a cavern—vast and hollow, the ceiling lost in shadow. Strange symbols glowed faintly along the walls, pulsing in time with the void's rhythm. Their light flickered like dying embers, casting long, jagged shapes across the uneven floor. Dust swirled in the air, disturbed by his breathing.

Li Tian staggered to his feet, his breath fogging in the cold air. The whispers had grown louder, and now they were accompanied by something else—a steady, rhythmic thrum, like the beating of a massive heart. It resonated through the chamber, rattling his bones and vibrating through the void inside him.

"Where am I?" he murmured.

The void pulsed again, stronger this time. And then he saw it.

At the center of the cavern, half-buried in stone and wrapped in chains that shimmered with energy, was a figure. It was humanoid but massive, its features obscured by a mask of bone and shadow. Its chest rose and fell slowly, as though it were sleeping.

No—it wasn't sleeping.

It was waiting.

Li Tian stepped closer, the void trembling as though it recognized the presence. The chains shifted slightly, and the figure's head turned.

Its eyes opened.

A low hum filled the air, and the void inside Li Tian surged. The figure's gaze locked onto him, and the whispers grew into a cacophony, echoing in his mind. Energy rippled through the cavern, cracking the stone beneath his feet.

"Who… are you?" Li Tian whispered, his voice barely audible.

The figure didn't speak, but its eyes burned brighter, twin orbs of pale fire. The chains rattled as it shifted, and the symbols on the walls flared, pulsing faster. The void within Li Tian trembled, drawn toward the figure like iron to a magnet.

Li Tian staggered back, but the pull intensified. The cavern shook, and the chains groaned as if they could no longer hold.

The void roared.
