Chapter 27: Chains of the Past
The cavern pulsed with raw energy, its rhythm matching the thrum of Li Tian's heart. Dust swirled around his feet, disturbed by the trembling ground. The chained figure loomed before him, its massive form exuding a presence that made the void within him quiver in recognition—and fear. The air itself seemed heavier, thick with a pressure that bore down on his shoulders and threatened to crush him.
Li Tian staggered back a step, his eyes locked on the figure's glowing gaze. The whispers surrounding him had risen into a chaotic symphony, a cacophony of voices that clawed at his thoughts. Each sound dug deeper, pulling at the edges of his sanity. The void surged, feeding on the energy that radiated from the chains, growing heavier and harder to control.
The figure moved. The chains groaned, their runes flaring with light as they resisted, but the figure's head tilted slightly, its gaze boring into Li Tian. Its movements were unnervingly slow, deliberate, as though it were testing the limits of its bonds.
"You…" The voice echoed, layered and inhuman. It wasn't spoken aloud but carved directly into Li Tian's mind. He fell to one knee, clutching his head as the void roared in response.
"Who are you?" Li Tian forced the words out, his voice cracking under the strain. His vision blurred as the void pulsed harder, responding to the figure's presence like a starving beast drawn to prey.
The figure did not answer immediately. Instead, the light in its eyes dimmed and then flared again. "You carry its seed," it said at last. "You are bound to it, and it to you."
"The void?" Li Tian's voice trembled. "What do you know about it?"
"I am what you will become." The chains rattled as the figure leaned forward, its shadow swallowing the light around it. "Unless you break free."
Li Tian's breath caught. The void surged again, but this time it felt different—almost drawn toward the figure, as if seeking to reunite with something ancient and forgotten. He pushed it back, sweat beading on his brow as he forced himself to stand.
"Break free?" Li Tian demanded. "What does that mean?"
The figure's head tilted again, but before it could answer, the cavern shook violently. The glowing runes along the chains flickered, and cracks splintered through the walls. A section of rock collapsed near the entrance, and the whispers grew louder.
"They come," the figure said. "But they are not your true enemy."
Li Tian turned as the ground split again, and shadows poured into the cavern. The creatures—twisted forms of darkness and claw—emerged from the cracks, their glowing eyes fixed on him. The villagers' screams echoed from the tunnel above, and Li Tian felt the void lurch toward the creatures, eager to consume.
"No!" He slammed his hands against the ground, letting the void lash outward. Energy crackled through the air, forming a barrier that halted the creatures' advance. The air rippled with the force of the blast, and the creatures hesitated—but only for a moment.
The figure watched, unmoving, as the barrier faltered under the creatures' relentless assault. "You cannot hold them," it said. "Not as you are."
Li Tian gritted his teeth. "Then tell me how to stop this!"
The chains groaned louder as the figure leaned even closer. "Unleash it," it said. "Or be devoured."
Li Tian hesitated, the void pulsing violently within him. He could feel it pressing against his control, demanding release. The whispers twisted into a single voice now, urging him to obey.
"No!" He dug his fingers into the dirt, forcing the energy back into himself. His vision blurred, but he didn't relent. "I won't lose myself to this!"
The figure's eyes flared again. "Then you will die."
A shriek split the air as one of the creatures broke through the barrier. It lunged toward Li Tian, claws outstretched, and he barely had time to dodge. Pain flared along his arm as its claws raked across his flesh.
The void surged, responding to his pain, and Li Tian let it go.
Darkness exploded outward, slamming into the creature and throwing it back. More followed, but the void lashed out, tendrils of energy cutting them down before they could reach him. Li Tian staggered, his vision swimming as the void fed hungrily, but the creatures kept coming.
The figure's voice cut through the chaos. "You cannot fight alone. Free me."
Li Tian's gaze snapped to the chains. The runes were dimming, their light fading with each tremor. He knew what it meant. The void was tied to this figure—and freeing it might break the balance completely.
"Do it!" the figure commanded. "Or this world will fall!"
Li Tian's hands shook as he reached for the chains. The void flared, urging him on, but doubt gnawed at the edges of his mind.
"If I free you," Li Tian said, his voice low, "what will you become?"
The figure's eyes burned brighter. "What you need."
The cavern shook again, and more creatures poured in. Li Tian had no time to think. With a shout, he slammed his hands onto the runes, channeling the void directly into them.
The chains shattered.
Light exploded outward, blinding him. The whispers silenced, replaced by a single voice—the void's roar. Li Tian fell back as the figure rose, its massive form stretching as the chains dissolved into ash.
When the light faded, the figure stepped forward, no longer bound but still wrapped in shadows. It turned to Li Tian, its glowing eyes softer now, but no less intense.
"Now," it said, "we begin."
Li Tian's breath caught as the void pulsed harder, and the cavern trembled again. Whatever had begun, it wasn't over.
