Chapter 28: Bound by Shadows
The cavern trembled as the last echoes of the shattered chains faded. Li Tian staggered back, his heart pounding, the void within him surging and writhing like a caged beast now set loose. Dust and light swirled around the newly freed figure, its massive form towering over him, draped in shadows that moved as though alive.
The figure stretched, its limbs unnaturally long and sinewy, as if waking from centuries of confinement. Runes carved into its skin pulsed faintly, dimming as the energy binding it dissipated. Its glowing eyes bore down on Li Tian, piercing through him with an intensity that made his knees tremble. The cavern walls seemed to pulse with energy, the lingering remnants of the chains creating faint ripples in the air.
"You have done what must be done," the figure said, its voice resonating through the cavern like a storm. It was deeper now, more powerful—no longer bound by its chains. "But the path you walk has changed."
Li Tian swallowed, forcing himself to stand straight despite the weight pressing down on his shoulders. "Who are you?" he demanded. His voice wavered, but he held his ground.
The figure tilted its head, shadows rippling around it. "I was once like you—a bearer of the void's seed. But I failed to control it. I let it consume me, and in return, I became this." It gestured to itself, and the shadows coiled tighter as though feeding off the void's energy.
Li Tian felt his breath hitch. "Then why did I free you?"
"Because," the figure said, stepping closer, "I hold the knowledge you need to survive. Without me, you will fall to the void as I did."
Li Tian clenched his fists, the void within him pulsing harder as if in response to the figure's presence. The shadows around the figure twisted outward, brushing against the walls and leaving faint scorch marks. Despite its ominous presence, Li Tian felt an odd connection—an inexplicable pull that made the void inside him resonate.
Before he could respond, the ground shuddered again. The cracks widened, and more creatures emerged—twisted forms of darkness, their claws scraping against the stone. The villagers' distant screams echoed down the tunnel, sharp and panicked. The sound sent a jolt of fear through Li Tian's chest.
Li Tian turned, his heart lurching. "The others!"
"They cannot hold for long," the figure said, its voice steady. "And neither can you—not alone."
The creatures surged forward, their eyes glowing with malice. Li Tian raised his hands, the void answering his call as arcs of energy lashed out, striking the nearest attackers. They fell, but more replaced them, their snarls echoing through the cavern. Sweat dripped down his brow as his focus wavered. He was running out of time.
"Help me!" Li Tian shouted.
The figure raised one hand, and shadows erupted from its form, cascading outward like waves. The creatures recoiled as the shadows tore through them, leaving nothing but ash in their wake. The cavern trembled, and the runes on the walls flickered before fading entirely. The display of power left Li Tian momentarily stunned, his breathing ragged.
Li Tian gasped, feeling the weight of the void lessen slightly. "What are you?"
"I am what you must become," the figure said. "A conduit for the void's power. But unlike me, you still have time to master it."
Li Tian wiped the sweat from his brow. "What does that mean? How do I control it?"
The figure stepped closer, and the shadows seemed to retreat into its form, revealing a faint outline of something more human beneath. "You learn, or you fall. There is no middle ground."
Another tremor rippled through the cavern, and Li Tian turned back toward the tunnel. The screams of the villagers had grown fainter. "We have to go back. They need me."
The figure extended one long arm, placing a heavy hand on Li Tian's shoulder. The touch burned slightly, and the void within him pulsed in response. "No. First, you must strengthen yourself. If you fall now, they all die."
Li Tian shook off the figure's grip, stepping back. "I won't abandon them!"
"You already have." The figure's voice cut through him like a blade. "You left them the moment you accepted the void's power. The moment you broke my chains."
Li Tian's breath caught, but he forced the doubt down. "Then help me stop this. Show me how to use this power without losing myself."
The figure studied him for a moment, its glowing eyes dimming slightly. "Very well," it said at last. "But know this—what you gain, you cannot give back. And what you become may not be what you intended."
The shadows writhed again as the figure turned, striding toward the tunnel's mouth. "Follow, if you dare."
Li Tian hesitated, the weight of his decision pressing heavily on his shoulders. The villagers' screams were gone now, replaced only by the echoes of the cavern and the soft hum of the void within him.
He glanced at the ground, at the broken chains that still shimmered faintly with remnants of power. Was this truly the only way forward? His fingers twitched as the void stirred, urging him to follow.
With one final breath, he stepped into the shadows and followed.
