The Rise of a New Demon King

Chapter 20: Trial by Fire

The Kagemoritai briefing room was eerily quiet, save for the faint hum of monitors lining the walls. Shiro and Chiyo stood side by side, tension thick in the air. A holographic display flickered to life before them, displaying a map of the city with glowing red markers scattered across it.

Kenzo leaned against the far wall, arms crossed. His expression was unusually grim.

Kenzo: "Listen up. You've been given clearance for your first mission as a team. Don't screw it up."

Shiro raised an eyebrow.

Shiro: "You're just going to let us handle this alone? What if things get out of control?"

Kenzo smirked, shaking his head.

Kenzo: "That's what the threat-level system is for. Each rogue devil we track is assigned a grade based on its power, intelligence, and the level of destruction it's capable of. The ones you're dealing with are classified as D-Rank. Manageable for rookies—if you can stop bickering long enough to work together."

Chiyo scoffed, resting his spear on his shoulder.

Chiyo: "D-Rank? Sounds like a waste of time. I could handle this on my own."

Shiro rolled his eyes.

Shiro: "Careful, your ego's showing."

Kenzo's voice cut through their exchange like a blade.

Kenzo: "Enough. D-Rank or not, these things are still deadly if you let your guard down. They may be weaker than the ones I deal with, but that doesn't mean they can't kill you—or innocent bystanders. Treat this like a real mission."

Kenzo tapped the display, zooming in on a marked location near the city's industrial district.

Kenzo: "We've tracked a rogue devil to this abandoned warehouse. Your objective is simple: eliminate the target and ensure no collateral damage. I'll be out handling a separate mission, so don't expect me to swoop in if you screw up."

Shiro crossed his arms, trying to hide the flicker of nervousness in his eyes.

Shiro: "Got it. We'll handle it."

Chiyo smirked, glancing at Shiro.

Chiyo: "Try not to slow me down, rookie."

Shiro bristled but kept his mouth shut. Kenzo watched them both, his expression unreadable.

Kenzo: "One more thing. Your bond with your demon companions is your greatest weapon, but it's also your greatest risk. Don't let your power get ahead of your control. Now get moving."

The warehouse loomed in the distance, its broken windows and rusted exterior casting long shadows under the setting sun. Shiro and Chiyo approached cautiously, the tension between them almost as palpable as the dark energy radiating from inside.

Shiro: "Alright, what's the plan?"

Chiyo: "Plan? You stay out of my way, and I'll take care of it."

Shiro: "Wow, great teamwork. Really inspiring."

Before they could argue further, a low growl echoed from within the warehouse. The rogue devil stepped into view—a hunched, twisted figure with elongated limbs and glowing red eyes. Its aura was faint compared to what Shiro had faced before, but the sheer malice it radiated was enough to send a chill down his spine.

Kageboshi's voice echoed in Shiro's mind.

Kageboshi: "This one's weak, but don't get cocky. It's smarter than it looks."

Yamitsuki spoke to Chiyo in a calm, calculating tone.

Yamitsuki: "Strike quickly. Don't give it time to adapt."

The devil lunged, its claws slicing through the air. Chiyo reacted first, meeting the attack head-on with his spear. Sparks flew as their weapons clashed, the force of the impact sending Chiyo skidding backward.

Shiro: "You've got this, huh? Doesn't look like it."

Chiyo growled, but before he could respond, the devil turned its attention to Shiro, charging with frightening speed. Shiro summoned his shadows, forming a barrier just in time to deflect the attack.

Shiro: "Alright, fine. Let's see what you've got."

The rogue devil moved erratically, its lanky form twisting and contorting as it evaded their attacks. Shiro tried to corner it with his shadows while Chiyo aimed for its weak points, but their lack of coordination quickly became apparent.

Chiyo: "Stop cutting me off! You're messing up my strikes!"

Shiro: "Maybe if you stopped hogging the fight, we'd actually land a hit!"

Their argument gave the devil an opening. It leaped into the air, slamming its claws into the ground and sending a shockwave that knocked them both off their feet.

Kageboshi: "You're going to get yourselves killed if you don't focus."

Yamitsuki: "Listen to each other, or this fight will be over before it begins."

Shiro and Chiyo exchanged a glance, reluctant understanding passing between them.

Shiro: "Fine. I'll cover you. Go for the legs."

Chiyo nodded, spinning his spear as dark energy crackled along its length. Shiro summoned a wave of shadows, forcing the devil to retreat toward Chiyo's strike zone. Chiyo lunged, his spear slicing through the devil's legs and sending it crashing to the ground.

The devil shrieked, thrashing wildly as it tried to escape. Shiro stepped forward, Onimaru gleaming in his hand.

Shiro: "Stay down."

With one swift strike, the battle was over. The devil dissolved into ash, its presence fading from the air.

Shiro and Chiyo stood in the empty warehouse, both panting from the effort.

Chiyo: "Not bad… for a rookie."

Shiro rolled his eyes but smirked despite himself.

Shiro: "Same to you, partner."

Their moment of camaraderie was interrupted by the sound of Kenzo's voice crackling over their communicators.

Kenzo: "Mission complete?"

Shiro: "Yeah. Barely."

Kenzo: "Good. You'll need to do better next time. And there will be a next time. I've got a lead on the root of these rogues, but it's going to take time. Until then, you two are on cleanup duty. Get used to working together."

The line went dead, leaving Shiro and Chiyo alone in the fading light.

Chiyo: "Guess we don't have a choice."

Shiro: "Nope. But hey, maybe we'll survive this after all."
