The Rise of a New Demon King

Chapter 27: Crossroads of Truth

The sterile, quiet halls of the Kagemoritai headquarters were an odd contrast to the tension that had gripped its core members. Kenzo sat on a recovery bed in the medical wing, his body battered but his spirit simmering with a mix of frustration and determination. Akira stood by the window, his imposing figure silhouetted against the pale morning light.

Kenzo: "I had him, Akira. I just needed a little more time."

Akira turned, his face calm but his eyes sharp.

Akira: "You were seconds away from being overwhelmed. If I hadn't stepped in, you wouldn't be here now. Your pride nearly cost you everything."

Kenzo clenched his fists, his jaw tightening.

Kenzo: "Kael… That devil is no ordinary opponent. He's disciplined, powerful, and worst of all, he's playing a long game. Kaels master has built more than just a network of chaos—they have soldiers."

Akira nodded, his arms crossed as he considered the information.

Akira: "Kael is a threat, but he's not invincible. What's more concerning is their coordination. If this unknown enemy has beings like him under their control, this is bigger than we anticipated."

Kenzo leaned back, wincing as his injuries flared.

Kenzo: "It's more than just Kael. During the fight, he mentioned something—plans to disrupt the balance of power between light and dark. This isn't just about rogue devils anymore."

Akira's face remained stoic, but his mind worked furiously. He glanced at Kenzo.

Akira: "What about your pupils? Do you think they might be ready?"

The image of Shiro and Chiyo clashing during their training flashed in his mind. They were skilled, yes, but this was a different level entirely. Still, he couldn't ignore their growth.

Kenzo's eyes narrowed, his frustration simmering beneath the surface.

Kenzo: "There's something you should know, Akira. About my pupils."

Akira raised an eyebrow, his calm demeanor unwavering.

Kenzo: "One of them is your son. I've been training him in secret."

Akira raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

Akira: "Interesting. Go on."

Kenzo: "I've been guiding him closely, teaching him to control his powers. He's further along than you might think."

Akira tilted his head, a faint smirk forming.

Akira: "I suspected as much. Your approach to his growth has been... personal. And considering his sudden spike in abilities, it was clear someone was guiding him."

Kenzo blinked, slightly taken aback.

Kenzo: "You're not surprised?"

Akira: "Not at all. You've always had a soft spot for talent. And frankly, I approve. Shiro needed someone like you to push him."

Kenzo blinked, stunned.

Kenzo: "You knew?"

Akira: "I've known since the beginning. You're not as discreet as you think, Kenzo. And frankly, I approved of it. Shiro needed someone like you to guide him."

Kenzo: "And you didn't say anything because…?"

Akira's smile faded, replaced by a seriousness that demanded attention.

Akira: "Because I trust you. But now, it's time Shiro knows the truth about who I am. He deserves to understand what he's fighting for—and what's at stake."

Kenzo frowned, his gaze shifting to the floor.

Kenzo: "He'll take it hard."

Akira: "He's stronger than you think."

Meanwhile, Shiro sat alone in one of the training rooms, the events of the past days replaying in his mind. Kageboshi's voice broke the silence, its tone unusually soft.

Kageboshi: "You're troubled."

Shiro: "Troubled? Try confused. Every day, there's something new—a mission, a battle, a revelation. And no one seems to think I deserve the whole picture. It's like I'm being thrown into a story that doesn't make sense, and I'm just supposed to play along."

Kageboshi paused, his tone taking on an unusual seriousness.

Kageboshi: "Life rarely hands you the answers you want, Shiro. Sometimes, you have to step forward blind and trust you'll find your footing. But soon, you may start seeing the bigger picture."

Shiro frowned, his frustration simmering beneath the surface. Before he could press further, the door opened, and his breath hitched as Akira and Kenzo entered. Akira's expression was unreadable, but Kenzo's was grim.

Akira: "Shiro, we need to talk."

The weight in Akira's tone sent a chill down Shiro's spine. He stood, facing his father with a mix of confusion and apprehension.

Shiro froze from the shock of suddenly seeing his father on the grounds of what is supposed to be a top secret organization.

Shiro: "DADDD!! What is the meaning of this?"

Akira took a step closer, his voice steady but firm.

Akira: "I've kept something from you—something you deserve to know. I'm not just your father. I'm the head of the Kagemoritai. Everything you've been fighting for, everything you've been training to protect—it's all under my watch."

Shiro's eyes widened, the revelation hitting him like a thunderclap.

Shiro: "You… you're the head? Why didn't you tell me?"

Akira's gaze softened, but his resolve remained.

Akira: "Because I needed you to grow on your own. To prove to yourself that you were capable, without my influence. And you have, Shiro. You've exceeded my expectations."

Shiro struggled to process the information, his emotions a whirlwind of shock, pride, and frustration.

Shiro: "I don't know what to say."

Kenzo stepped forward, his tone lighter to break the tension.

Kenzo: "Say you're ready for what comes next. Because tomorrow, we're stepping things up."

Akira nodded, his gaze shifting between Shiro and Kenzo.

Akira: "You and Chiyo will take the lead on the next mission. The stakes are rising, and it's time you prove yourselves in the field."

Shiro's determination flared, pushing aside his lingering doubts.

Shiro: "I'll do it. Whatever it takes."

Kenzo allowed a small grin.

Kenzo: "Good. Meet me at the training fields tomorrow. We'll make sure you're ready."

As Akira and Kenzo left the room, Shiro stood in silence, the weight of the revelation settling over him. But within that weight, he found a newfound sense of purpose.

Shiro (thinking): No more doubts. No more hesitation. I'll protect the people I care about—no matter what.
