The Secret Marriage Pact

Chapter 22: A Business Rivalry

Amelia woke up to the sound of voices echoing through the mansion. She rubbed her eyes and stepped out of her room, only to find the staff rushing about nervously. Something was wrong, and she could feel it in the air. As she descended the grand staircase, she spotted Lucas standing in the center of the living room, his expression colder than she'd ever seen.

Across from him stood a man she didn't recognize. He was tall, sharply dressed, and carried an aura of arrogance. His smirk as he spoke to Lucas was enough to set anyone on edge. Amelia stopped halfway down the stairs, observing the tense interaction.

"I told you, Lucas," the man said, his voice smooth but cutting. "Your days of controlling this market are numbered. I'm not here to play nice anymore."

Lucas's jaw tightened, and his icy stare could have frozen fire. "Ethan," he replied, his tone calm but laced with danger, "you've always had a habit of overestimating yourself. I built this empire with my own hands. Do you think a spoiled brat like you can take it from me?"

Amelia finally stepped down, her curiosity piqued. She realized this man, Ethan, must be one of Lucas's business rivals. From the looks of it, their rivalry was personal. Ethan's presence seemed to anger Lucas more than anyone she had seen before.

As the conversation continued, Amelia learned that Ethan had been trying to poach Lucas's clients and sabotage his deals. He was opening a competing business in the same industry, and it was clear he was determined to take Lucas down.

"You're losing ground, Lucas," Ethan sneered. "Your empire is crumbling, and you don't even see it."

Lucas took a step forward, his voice low and dangerous. "If you think you can steal what's mine, you'll regret it. I don't lose, Ethan. And I don't forgive."

Ethan laughed, clearly enjoying the tension he was causing. "We'll see about that. Enjoy your last days on top." With that, he turned on his heel and walked out, leaving Lucas staring after him with a storm brewing in his eyes.

Once Ethan was gone, Lucas turned to Amelia, who was now standing nearby. "You shouldn't have come down," he said, his tone softer but still carrying the weight of his anger.

"I couldn't just sit in my room while you were dealing with... that," Amelia said, gesturing toward the door Ethan had just exited through. "Who is he?"

Lucas sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Ethan Carter. A trust fund kid who thinks he can play in the big leagues. His father's company used to be one of my biggest competitors, but when his father passed, Ethan took over and started trying to dismantle everything I've built."

Amelia frowned. "Why does it seem so personal? This isn't just business, is it?"

Lucas hesitated before answering. "Ethan and I have history. His family used to be close to mine. When my father was still alive, there were talks of merging our businesses, but when things fell apart, so did the friendship. Ethan blames my family for their struggles, and he's been trying to get back at me ever since."

Amelia could see the weight this rivalry placed on Lucas. Despite his calm exterior, she knew it bothered him deeply. "What are you going to do?" she asked.

Lucas looked at her, his eyes hardening again. "I'll do what I always do. Fight back. He thinks he can beat me, but he has no idea who he's dealing with."

Over the next few days, the tension in the mansion was palpable. Lucas threw himself into his work, meeting with his team and devising strategies to counter Ethan's moves. Amelia watched from the sidelines, both impressed and concerned by Lucas's relentless determination.

One evening, as they sat together over dinner, Amelia broke the silence. "Lucas, don't let this consume you. He wants to get under your skin, and it's working."

Lucas set down his glass and looked at her. "I appreciate your concern, Amelia, but this is my fight. I can't let him win. Not just for me, but for everyone who depends on me."

Amelia nodded, understanding his perspective but still wishing he would let her in more. "Just remember, you're not alone in this. You have people who care about you."

Her words seemed to soften him, even if just for a moment. He reached across the table and took her hand. "Thank you," he said simply.

The next day, Lucas's plan to counter Ethan's moves began to take shape. He reached out to his clients, reinforcing their trust in him and offering them new deals to ensure their loyalty. He also started investigating Ethan's business, looking for weaknesses he could exploit.

Amelia, wanting to help in any way she could, used her sharp instincts to offer suggestions. Though Lucas was initially hesitant to involve her, he soon realized her insights were valuable. Together, they worked late into the night, forming a stronger bond as they faced the challenge head-on.

But just as they started to gain the upper hand, Ethan struck back. One of Lucas's key deals fell through, and it became clear that Ethan had been behind it. The rivalry escalated, and the stakes grew even higher.

Despite the setbacks, Lucas refused to back down. "If he wants a war, he'll get one," he said, his voice firm with resolve.

Amelia could only hope that Lucas's determination wouldn't blind him to the dangers ahead. She knew that Ethan was willing to play dirty, and she feared what might happen if Lucas didn't tread carefully.

As the battle between the two men intensified, Amelia found herself caught in the middle. She realized that Lucas's world was far more dangerous than she had ever imagined, and she wondered how long they could keep fighting without losing something or someone important.

Lucas prepared for his next move, determined to protect everything he had built. Amelia, standing by his side, knew that the road ahead would be filled with challenges, but she also felt a growing sense of loyalty to Lucas. Together, they braced themselves for the battles yet to come, knowing that the rivalry with Ethan was only the beginning of the trials they would face.

But as Lucas turned to face her, his expression hardened, and he whispered, "There's something I haven't told you, Amelia. Something that could change everything." Before she could ask, his phone rang, the name on the screen sending a chill down her spine: Ethan Blackwood..
