Chapter 379: Chapter 378: Decisive Battle at the Lizardfolk Ruins
As Fugen had anticipated, the attack by the spirit lizard legion was just the beginning.
In the afternoon, the expeditionary army soon discovered the lizardfolk's counterattack.
Taller and standing higher than humans, a legion of lizard warriors appeared deep in the rainforest. These creatures were not the small members of the spirit lizard legion; these lizard warriors were tall and strong, their muscular arms powerful. They surged out from the lush jungle like a green tide, completely surrounding the ruins.
"Shhh shhh shhh~" A large group of cold lizard cavalry also appeared deep in the jungle.
The ancient race revealed its fangs.
"Legion Commander, scouts have found a large number of lizardfolk reinforcements!" a great swordsman immediately reported.
"How many?" Fugen maintained his composure.
"Countless, estimated to be over five thousand." The great swordsman's forehead was sweaty. "What do we do, Commander? Should we retreat?"
"Retreat? We're on lizardfolk turf, in a tropical rainforest. Do you think we can outpace these lizardfolk?" Before Fugen could respond, Pirazzo first scolded the great swordsman for his unrealistic idea. The experienced mercenary leader glanced briefly at the distance.
The forest was trembling, the sea of trees swaying, a palpable restlessness stirring.
The morale of the expeditionary army began to erode due to the unknown fears, the soldiers hesitating subconsciously as they looked towards the figure standing on the ruins.
He was their faith.
Fugen knew what he had to say.
In the heart of the emperor's son genetic template, his subordinates were a motley crew, not even comparable to the legion he once had, nor to the forces he led when blown to that planet by the subspace storm.
But what did that matter? Who doesn't start from nothing, from weak to strong?
Since being resurrected, Fugen had set a standard in his heart. He needed to prove himself again before his father, to show that he and his army were the perfect sons of the emperor, using this army to recreate his own glory!
Under the watchful eyes of all, the Ash Legion Commander spoke.
"Wealth, or death; glory, or oblivion." Fugen's eyes sparkled as he held up the golden power sword, slowly saying, "Now, there is only one battle, unavoidable and undeniable. Soldiers, are you afraid?"
"No!" came the shout from the soldiers of Lucia, whether they were young soldiers eager to prove themselves, mercenaries longing for wealth, criminals seeking redemption, or vagrants who joined to survive.
No matter who they were, they all had a fierce spirit. Hearing Fugen's words and feeling his disdainful gaze, almost instantly, the soldiers blushed with anger, roaring, "No!"
"Then, are you willing to fight for me?" Fugen's unparalleled figure stood above all, he felt it—the faith, bravery, and hope of humanity.
"Willing! Willing!"
"The glories of the past have turned into illusions; endless darkness once devoured us, but we still stand here! We are the great humans, the greatest race in the universe, born from war, we never surrender. Brave, loyal, faithful, my soldiers, raise your weapons, grasp your shields, let us write the glory of our expeditionary army in blood and fire!" Fugen laughed, raising his sword.
"Born from darkness!"
"In light, hope endures!"
The majestic figure sang passionately, his god-like dignity invigorating the entire expeditionary army.
It was a brilliance more dazzling than the sun.
"Glory! Glory! Glory!"
The Ash Legion was boiling with energy, the human soldiers roaring, their cowardice, fear, and wavering turned to ashes, leaving only loyalty and faith, and the fiery blood ignited in their chests.
Fearless courage became a mighty strength.
"In a future filled with endless darkness, there is only war. Soldiers, who is your enemy?"
"The enemy of our Commander is our enemy!"
"Soldiers, why do your swords exist?"
"For the honor of our Commander! To protect our Commander!!!"
The human army was once again ready for battle.
When a large group of lizard warriors appeared before the expeditionary force, all human troops were prepared, with no panic or fear, firmly guarding the entrance to the ruins.
"Uwaaaah!" The first wave of thousands of lizard warriors roared as they charged towards the human army.
"Fire the cannons!" Pirazzo signaled for the artillery to fire: "Fire!"
"Fire the cannons!!!" Five mortars and three cannons fired simultaneously!
"Boom~ Boom~ Boom~" The huge cannon muzzles spewed red flames, mortar shells flew into the sky, directly bombarding the lizard warrior groups, the first shell exploding amidst them unexpectedly, instantly engulfing seven or
eight lizard warriors in flames.
"Shh shh shh~" A series of eight shells continued to fall and explode among the lizard warriors, causing setbacks for the lizard legion, the human artillery proving powerful, suppressing the lizard warriors.
Yet these ancient forest dwellers showed no sign of retreat or wavering. As if the deaths of their kin meant nothing, more lizard warriors surged out from the rainforest, charging towards the human army.
"Fire!" Under the leadership of seasoned veterans, crossbowmen and musketeers fired at the approaching lizard warriors, dense bolts and musket balls dropping the first row of lizard warriors to the ground.
The effectiveness of crossbows had diminished significantly. Unlike the spirit lizard soldiers, the lizard warriors had tough skin, wielding shields, and unless struck in vital points, they would not fall. They released the rage of native creatures, many lizard warriors with dozens of arrows stuck in them continued their charge.
"Wuwawawa!" The first lizard warrior approached the human line, swinging its mace, swiftly knocking aside several spears: "Roar!!"
"Stab!" Long spearmen stepped back, holding their spears with both hands, forcefully stabbing, seven or eight spears piercing the body of the lizard warrior.
"Such thick skin!" a human soldier called out, "Aim for the vitals!"
Lizard warriors were entirely different from spirit lizards, their skins much harder, ordinary spear tips hardly able to harm their flesh unless used correctly.
"Hold on!!" Human soldiers, their morale high, tightly grouped together, spears like a forest, forcing the lizard warriors to struggle to break through the spear line. The soldiers sang courageously, forcefully stabbing with their spears and halberds.
"Die, alien!!!" A young recruit forcefully stabbed his spear into the belly of a lizard warrior, blood splashing over his face.
He instinctively tried to pull back his spear but found the lizard warrior grasping the spear, the alien firmly grabbing the shaft, then reversing it to thrust its own lizard spear through the young soldier's skull!
Blood splattered, the recruit's head was pierced, his comrades even tasting his brain matter.
No time for mourning, no time for anger, immediately another long spearmen filled the gap in the line, as the next wave of lizard warriors charged, the crossbowmen and musketeers had reloaded: "Fire!"
"Boom~ Bang bang bang~" A dense gunfire sounded, the lizard warriors in front of the military formation being shot at close range by muskets, dropping a swath of bodies.
The first lizard legion had already lost over half its force, and although humans also suffered significant losses, when the human artillery launched a second round of fire to intercept charging lizard warriors, sounds of whistles and unique roars finally emanated from deep in the forest.
"Cavalry!!!" The human army soon noticed a large group of cavalry attacking from the flank!
Hundreds of cavalry, made up of cold lizards nearly the size of horses and lizard warriors riding them, some armed with spears, some with clubs, quickly crossed the ruins towards the side of the human military formation, directly targeting the cannon and mortar positions!
"Stay calm!" Fugen raised his golden power sword: "Wolf Formation!"
"Yes!" Human soldiers responded loudly, facing the approaching lizardfolk cold lizard cavalry, soldiers quickly organized into squads, rushing to the inevitable path of the lizard cavalry, ready to combat the cavalry.
The well-trained long spearmen planted their shields on the ground, raising their spears. As the cavalry approached, these long spearmen suddenly stepped back and kneeled, angling their shields upward.
"???" Hundreds of cold lizard cavalry did not react in time to the humans' movements. The cold lizards stepped on the shields, crossing over the first row of soldiers, then realizing too late as they fell through the air.
Waiting for them were large groups of long spearmen and sword-and-shield men, each cold lizard cavalry rider finding themselves facing at least three human enemies!
"Advance!!!" Great swordsmen joined the battle, veteran soldiers wielding great swords swiftly killing these isolated cold lizard cavalry, many lizard warriors being pulled off the cold lizards and trapped by human encirclements.
"Rise!" When half the cold lizard cavalry had fallen, Fugen commanded the long spearmen to stand their shields up, the remaining cold lizard cavalry were blocked outside the lines, engaging in a brutal fight with the long spearmen.
Front, flank, everywhere were the battling figures of human troops and lizard legions, the entire ruins turning into a meat grinder, the bloodthirsty humans and lizard legions engaged in fierce close combat.
Deep in the rainforest, a spirit lizard priest said to a blue lizard riding a tyrannosaurus: "War Leader, the battle has reached a stalemate. If this continues, our losses will far exceed our gains."
The war leader, immensely strong, holding the divine spear Talanksrak in one hand and the "Hand of the Gods" in the other, rode the immortal tyrannosaurus "Quimoc". This lizardfolk, the leader of the Sun City Sacred Council, sat high on his throne. His fierce eyes watched the battlefield intently, his horns and skull adorned with gold, his eyes filled with nothing but a fervor for war and a thirst for blood. His golden armor served merely as an ornament—the skin underneath was tougher than the strongest steel.
Kuga, an ancient lizardman and one of the last survivors of the Ashtoth lizardfolk, had fought alongside other lizardmen against chaos demons after the ancient saints departed and the portals were destroyed. Initially, under the leadership of the slan, the lizardmen had the upper hand, but the endless hordes of chaos demons were too much. After centuries of war, the lizard legions were too weary to hold out, and Kuga and his troops were forced to retreat to the city of Xihout, defending it with slan magic.
Ultimately, a chaos storm rendered the slan magic ineffective and decimated the city. However, Kuga led the city's last lizardfolk army in a brutal guerilla war against the chaos demons.
This battle lasted for millennia, until the elves created the Great Maelstrom that drained the winds of chaos, allowing Kuga, who had fought guerrilla warfare against several legions of chaos demons for centuries, to finally receive reinforcements.
The now seven-thousand-year-old greatest lizardman warrior was dubbed the "War Lord" by the Sacred Council of the Slan, and he was the only lizardman (aside from the other lords who were slan) allowed into the sacred council.
"Call the pterosaur legion, and the ankylosaur!" Kuga, observing the battle, made a quick decision.
These humans were different from normal ones.
Kuga had already annihilated several waves of human explorers.
Humans were not a particularly strong race; they were greedy, opportunistic, and easily corrupted by chaos. According to Kuga's understanding, humans were not part of the "grand plan" and should be eradicated.
Based on past experience, the fear was that humans wouldn't be deceived. As long as humans were deceived and entered the ruins, the lizardman legion had already won. For centuries, several waves of human expeditionary forces had been annihilated here.
Kuga didn't understand why this human army was so elite, but he knew that this couldn't continue; the losses of the lizardman legion had already exceeded expectations, many lizard units had suffered heavy casualties.
Yet this human legion was also at its limit. Regardless of human discipline or how elite their legions were, the quality of individual soldiers still varied greatly.
Sharp roars pierced the tropical rainforest.
"Thump~ thump~ thump~" Ankylosaurs over five meters tall and several meters long appeared under Kuga's command from deep within the rainforest. These ancient behemoths unleashed their primal instincts, their bodies covered in extremely tough armor, moving forward with large strides: "Roar~~~"
"Giant beasts!!!" The human legion, locked in fierce combat with the lizard legions, spotted the behemoth figures, shocked and terrified. Pirazzo signaled the crossbowmen and musketeers to shoot at the ankylosaurs: "Shoot! Shoot at the giant beasts! Don't let them get close to our lines!"
The crossbowmen turned, unleashing a dense barrage of arrows.
It was ineffective; ordinary arrows couldn't penetrate the ankylosaurs' tough armor, only the muskets could inflict significant damage.
There weren't many musketeers, and the three ankylosaurs gradually approached the military formation.
War Lord Kuga raised his divine spear Talanksrak, releasing a wild roar. A large group of pterosaur riders appeared in the sky, small spirit lizard skirmishers riding them, they swooped over the battlefield, attacking the human lines from the side, a barrage of javelins raining down, instantly striking down dozens of soldiers.
"Boom!" The first ankylosaur approached the lines, ignoring the spears attacking it, unreasonably knocking rows of human soldiers flying, most weapons ineffective against it, only great swordsmen and musketeers able to cause it harm.
Under the massive threat of the ankylosaurs, the line broke, and the expeditionary force was forced to retreat.
Fugen knew he had to act.
His purple figure leapt down from the ruins, nimbly dodging an attack from a lizard warrior, his power sword surrounded by a golden arc enveloping the emperor's son genetic template's body into a purple light arc, so bright that nearby lizard warriors couldn't keep their eyes open.
As the light faded, eight lizard warriors around Fugen were neatly bisected, the cuts so smooth and even, they looked like perfect artistic
slices. The surrounding lizard warriors didn't even have time to react before they died on the spot.
In the next second, Fugen struck again, his speed ghostly, his figure like an eternal nightmare in subspace, instantly another eight lizard warriors were neatly halved.
The lizard legion's position turned into a bloody slaughterhouse, Fugen moved like a purple phantom; every place he swept through, the next breath saw dozens of lizard warriors dismembered, no lizard warrior could keep up with his speed or counter his exquisite swordsmanship.
"Roar!!!" An ankylosaur charged at Fugen, its heavy forelimbs shaking the ground.
Fugen didn't dodge; he raised his sword towards the ankylosaur: "Come."
"Roar!!!" The ankylosaur unleashed its furious power, gradually approaching the tall human before it, opening its wide mouth, intending to swallow this human whole, turning him into a meal in its belly.
Facing the giant beast, Fugen made only one move.
He lightly twisted his wrist holding the sword.
The ankylosaur released an uncontrollable wail, staggering two steps, then collapsing sideways to the ground, its throat completely sliced open, gushing large amounts of fresh red blood.
Fugen proudly stood in the center of the battlefield, a single person having routed an entire lizard legion, two ankylosaurs falling under his sword.
"Long live the Commander!"
"Fight! Fight!"
"Never give up!!!"
The morale of the humans surged, the soldiers unleashing terrifying combat power, finally managing to push back the lizard army.
The silver-haired figure stood atop a pile of lizard warrior bodies, Fugen extending the tip of his golden power sword, its blade raised towards the depths of the rainforest, directly pointing to where Kuga was.
Kuga quickly understood; this was a challenge.
Considering the heavy losses of the lizard legions, which had severely exceeded what Kuga could accept, the warlord riding the tyrannosaurus Quimoc finally emerged from deep in the rainforest.
As if fated, Kuga and Fugen locked eyes, the powerful lizardman warlord and the emperor's son genetic template found their match.
Kuga drove the tyrannosaurus swiftly, all humans who attempted to approach the warlord were torn to pieces.
Fugen, carrying his golden power sword, advanced at a slow pace, along the way, all lizard warriors attempting to stop him turned into a rain of blood.
In the middle of the bloody battlefield, amid the smoke of cannon fire, amid the dense barrage of javelins, arrows, and musket balls, the two met.
Battle!
