Chapter 28: before the beginning
Ander finished reading through the hand-copied "Dark Bible" brought by Tina with a smile, almost amused by it.
He had thought it was something important, but it turned out to be just another fantasy novel from another world. The general plot was this: A priest named Arthur, in an attempt to redeem his fallen lover, Elena, went through countless melodramatic events and ended up dying unexpectedly. Later, Arthur inexplicably resurrected as a zombie in the realm of the undead, retaining only fragmented memories… and quite coincidentally, the regretful Elena summoned him back to the main plane.
Thus, for Arthur, Elena endured numerous hardships to find a potion to restore him to life… after many more adventure-filled scenes, there were preachy parts extolling the teachings of the Light God. Arthur's black-bound Bible suddenly shone brilliantly, the Light God appeared, and Arthur was resurrected.
And so, the two lovers, after enduring hardships, lived happily ever after under the protection of the Light God.
Arthur, the male protagonist, was both infatuated and religiously fanatical, sometimes acting foolishly with knightly ideals, even sacrificing limbs for the 'sake of saving' others...
Ander thought that if this 100,000-word novel were placed on any site back on his Earth, it would only attract criticism.
It had no literary merit, no suspense, no romance, and was overly preachy… it was clearly something concocted by the Light God sect to deceive people. And yet, it had been popular on this main plane for over a thousand years?
Could it be that the people of this world had nothing else to read for entertainment?
Ander was about to ask, but before he could, Tina's mental energy was completely depleted. He hurriedly told her to rest and recover for the night, assuring her that he'd handle the match tomorrow, then took the skeleton mages back to the undead plane.
Even with the four skeleton mages, Tina had managed to sustain her energy for over forty minutes. Adding the time that Ander had already used up, they had easily lasted for fifty minutes—a remarkable feat.
So, Ander felt confident about the match the next day.
Back on the undead plane, Ander immediately started training for the earth-magic apprentice they would face in the competition, and continued working late into the night until he finally quieted down.
At dawn, he noticed it was still early and decided to take the dogs and skeletal servants for a run around the cemetery. He hunted down a few higher-level skeletons and used their soul flames to strengthen the chosen skeleton mages.
...
The magical bell for the match rang.
Little Christina, all alone, walked into the selected competition venue, "Rocky Wasteland," her head lowered.
In the best luxury box on the high stands, Theresa quietly watched the two entrants—slender and small Christina, and the muscular, blond youth, Demond Oyehwa.
"My dear little sister, is this the girl you believe has potential? Hahaha... I'm not laughing at you, but your taste really is questionable! What do you think, maybe it's time for you to let me handle the business instead!"
As Theresa observed in silence, a sharp voice suddenly rang out beside her. Turning her head slightly, she saw her second brother, Trett, who looked like he'd been overindulging in wine and women, his eyes dark from lack of sleep.
Theresa shot her brother a cold look, but said nothing. Trett, embarrassed, could only yawn loudly, and after a few moments of boredom, he crossed over to the front row of the noble box, where their eldest brother and father were already sitting.
"Teacher Kone, who do you think will win this match?"
With an air of polite indifference, Tarasha O'Gin, the nobleman, turned to ask the senior magician, Kone Yusenko, who was sitting next to him.
"Lord O'Gin, do you really think an apprentice-level summoner of undead magic can defeat an earth magic apprentice known for defense?" Kone Yusenko responded gruffly, his white beard twitching in slight impatience. As a professor at the Earth Branch of the Boen Law Academy, he had enough authority to look down on O'Gin. The only reason he was in the noble box at all was because there was some business to discuss.
"Ah, Teacher Kone, you're still so blunt!" Lord O'Gin smiled widely, his plump face resembling a flattened trumpet flower.
Unfortunately, Kone Yusenko only gave him a dismissive look and turned his attention back to the match.
Although the earth magic apprentice was sure to win, Kone was still a little curious about the undead apprentice girl's confidence… What did she rely on?
"Theresa, did you hear what Teacher Kone said?" Lord O'Gin asked, turning awkwardly to his daughter, Theresa.
"Yes, Father," Theresa replied, unable to treat her father with the same coldness she did her brother, even though she knew exactly what kind of man he was.
"Father, look! The match is starting!"
Suddenly, Idison O'Gin, who sat next to his father, excitedly nudged Lord O'Gin and shouted.
"I bet today we'll see the scene of a commoner girl pinned to the ground with earth spikes! Hahaha..."
Idison's loud voice echoed through the air as he eagerly anticipated the match, his eyes filled with disdain, lust, and bloodlust when they glanced at his sister, Theresa.
Theresa had a strong urge to unleash a flurry of wind blades and turn her disgusting brother into minced meat, but... even if she killed him, what difference would it make?
Just then, the match began—
...
"You still have time to quit, little girl! Otherwise, don't blame me for Demond going hard on you!" Demond O'Yehwa's mocking voice echoed from one end of the "Rocky Wasteland."
He was confident he'd win. Since he found out his opponent was a summoner of undead magic, he'd been laughing in his dreams.
Standing at the other end of the arena, Christina remained silent, just staring at Demond, then biting her lip and shaking her head in determination.
"This is your choice!" Demond shouted as he began casting a spell to summon the earth-element armor.
Once the earth-element armor enveloped him, Demond grinned, looking at the other side, only to find his eyes wide in disbelief.
"It's impossible!!!"
That damned girl... How could she possibly summon four skeleton mages at once?!
Especially the one who casually held its staff behind its neck—Demond found that particularly unsettling!
He suddenly realized... he was probably in for the worst luck imaginable.
