Chapter 125: I’m Back

Having left the Kingdom of God Tree, Otinia, it took us a month to finally return to the Valentine Duchy in the Ruzenia Empire.

“Wow. This place is really pretty. And so cold…”

Currently, it was winter in the Valentine Duchy, just before the New Year, with the entrance exam for Suzette Imperial Academy looming a month away.

“Here. Put this on.”

I said that and handed Shuvina a white coat made of white fox fur from my storage. She accepted it carefully and slipped her arms into the sleeves.

“Thank you. It’s so warm.”

“Is that so?”

I took out a coat from storage for myself and was about to walk toward the mansion when Fiera tugged at my hem, stopping me.

“What’s wrong?”

“What about me?”

“No, you said before that you weren’t cold.”

“It’s cold. Really cold. I feel like I’m about to freeze to death.”

Fiera said this while deliberately rubbing her arms to show she was cold, gazing at me without turning away.

“Sigh. Here.”

I handed her a coat made of silver wolf fur, but she accepted it with a complex expression, unsure if she should be happy.

“A wolf fur coat for me?”

“Eir. I think that’s a bit much, don’t you?”

Apparently, Fiera was unhappy about receiving a coat made from silver wolf fur, and Shuvina looked at me incredulously.

“It’s the only thing I have right now. Plus, if you’re about to freeze to death, something thick might be better, right? If you don’t like it, I’ll buy you something else next time, so just make do with this for now.”

“Really? Will you pick something out with me?”

“If I have plans, sure.”

“Okay. Got it.”

With Fiera finally in a better mood wearing the coat, we began walking toward the mansion.

“It’s amazing. This is snow… It’s my first time seeing it.”

Shuvina seemed fascinated by the snow she was seeing for the first time, eagerly playing around by touching the piles of snow or making snowballs.

“Doesn’t it snow in the Kingdom of God Tree?”

“No. In the Kingdom of God Tree, under the protection of the World Tree, the temperature and seasons are always stable. It’s always warm like spring, and while it may rain, it never snows.”

“Hmm. I see.”

Indeed, thinking back, the climate was always comfortable during my time in the Kingdom of God Tree, and I often had opportunities for naps.

“Let’s get going. If you want to play, you can do it later with Fiera, who’s itching to play over there.”

As I said this while looking at Fiera, wagging her tail in front of the snow mound, I called out to her, and at last, we reached the mansion.

“It’s big.”

“Well, it is a duke’s house after all. It’s a hassle for humans to not have a house that matches their status; otherwise, they’re looked down upon.”

“I see.”

“Now, let’s go.”

I said that as I called out to the knight standing by the gate, and as we passed through the gate, for some reason, Miria was standing there, looking at us and bowing her head.

“Welcome back, Lord Lewis.”

“Yeah, I’m back.”

“Your lordship and lady are inside.”

“I see. But Miria…”

“Yes?”

“How did you know I was coming back today?”

That was what I was curious about first—why she knew my return date. I had indeed informed my parents in advance through a letter that I would be returning soon, but I hadn’t specified a clear date.

So, Miria welcoming me at this precise timing felt quite mysterious, and I couldn’t help but ask.

“I am Lord Lewis’s personal maid, after all.”

“That’s not a good enough reason.”

“More importantly, your lordship and lady are waiting for your return.”

Miria clearly evaded the question, trying to guide me inside, but before she could, I glanced back at Fiera and Shuvina.

“It’s been a while, Fiera.”

“Yeah. Long time no see.”

“You’ve become even more beautiful in these two years. And who is this other lady?”

“Um, nice to meet you. I’m Shuvina, partnering with Eir.”

“Eir, Lord Lewis’s adventurer name, right? I see. So, what brings you here?”

Miria narrowed her eyes and asked Shuvina, her expression resembling someone sizing up an unfamiliar girl coming with her brother, enveloped in a suspicious atmosphere.

“Well, I was thinking about attending Suzette Imperial Academy with Eir and Fiera. I hoped to stay here until the exam.”

“I see.”

“Deciding to let Shuvina stay in the mansion was my judgment. In other words, she’s my guest, so treat her kindly.”

“As you wish. I will now guide you to your parents.”

Miria said this and led us toward where my parents were. However, while watching her walk in front of us, one thing caught my attention.

“Miria, have you been learning combat from someone?”

This was clear from the way Miria walked; her posture and walking style had changed from two years ago, and her stealthy steps resembled those of someone who had undergone special training.

“As expected! I’m currently receiving training from the intelligence department of the duke’s house.”

The intelligence department is a unique organization held by our duke’s house, created to gather all information within the empire.

Moreover, their combat skills are exceptionally high, as if a spy’s activities are discovered and their life is at risk, dying easily would render all the information they collected useless; therefore, they undergo rigorous training to survive.

They sometimes infiltrate other noble houses as maids or butlers, or work at taverns in towns and villages, and the imperial castle is no exception.

Usually, it would be thought that a noble house outside the borders, the bastion of the country, having its military force would be seen as holding rebellious intentions against the royal family; however, only our duke’s house and House Holstein are permitted this.

The reasons pertain to the formation of the country, but right now, what’s more important is that Miria is receiving training in that intelligence department.

“Hmm. Over there, huh? But I can’t understand why. Why is a maid like you doing that?”

“Two years ago, when Lord Lewis departed without me, you said, didn’t you? That I’d be a nuisance if I couldn’t follow you and that you wouldn’t take me with you. In other words, reversing that means that if I meet those conditions, there exists a chance that I could be taken next time. So, I trained hard with the people in the intelligence department, trying to become fit enough to not be a hindrance. Do you understand?”

Miria finished this without taking a pause, clasping her hands in front of her chest and smiling brightly.

Her aura was reminiscent of someone who was dependent on something, and she seemed certain of the future that would unfold, sending shivers down my spine.

(Isn’t this kind of crazy? Her magic power and control over it have been elevated immensely compared to before, and just observing her movements shows that her combat skills have improved.)

I indeed rejected her accompanying me back then when I said that, but I never expected her to overcome that denial and indirectly say she wanted to be taken next time, leaving me only able to twitch my cheeks.

“Anyway, hurry up and lead the way.”

Fiera, sensing my hesitation towards Miria, said this to her. She apologized once before guiding us back to my parents.

“Eir, this is bad. She seems all twisted up about various things.”

“I know. But since I don’t even understand why she ended up like that, there’s not much I can do about it, is there?”

If we understood the cause, we could manage it, but this time, it genuinely felt like there was no understanding and Miria seemed to have reached a point of no return with her issues—it was now beyond handling.

“We have arrived. Your lord and lady are inside.”

While I was thinking about various things, it seemed we reached the room where my parents were, and as Miria opened the door for us, we entered inside.

“I’m back.”

Feeling a slight joy at seeing my parents after so long, I forgot about Miria and stepped inside.
