The War of Extinction

During the time I climb the stairs to reach the top of the defense wall, I can feel the energy from my chest starts spreading all over my body.

I am leveling up as I expected it.

But to my surprise, my power level did not stop at Mid-F, but it continues to increase even more. I am getting the rare opportunity to double level-up and I am very happy about it I wanted to dance then and there.

But I controlled myself and kept walking to the top of the wall where I have to meet someone and get some answers. I cannot get distracted because of I am leveling up.

After a minute, I reached the High-F and the power buildup in my body did not stop there and still continued to increase. I am confused a little as this happens only for a few. It is a rarest of the rare phenomenon when someone gets upgraded directly from 1 grade to another without leveling up 1 level at a time.

I just think 'Guess Lady Luck is still with me.' And keep moving towards the top slowly savoring the victory we achieved after fighting continuously for 8 hours.

I got 3 good things happening in the same day. Right now, I feel like I am the luckiest person in the world. I hope the luck will stay with me for the rest of the day as the next thing I am going to do is way too dangerous than anyone can imagine.

After reaching the top I go directly to the center of the wall and shout "What the fu**k happened out there?" looking at Jack. I am pouring the entire frustration and anger I have bottled-up so far on him to know what is going on.

"Calm down kid. We will talk about it later." Jack replies to me calmly while Lieutenant Jess got angry and tried to move, but is held firmly by Jack.

I look at it, but I feel no fear for it and again ask "What happened? I want to know right here, right now." Without reducing my voice to which he replies "What happened here is a Dungeon Outbreak, which we used is as a test."

"A Test? Why? For What?" I ask with clear surprise in my voice. "Relax kid. Give it a break. I can't answer so many questions at the same time." Jack says lifting his hands as if he is surrendering which puzzles Jess even more.

"Why are you talking to him like an equal? He is a trash." She tells Jack to which he says "He might look like a trash to you, but he is one of a kind. We need him more than you think." With a smile on his face.

He looks at me and says "Yes Alex. What happened here is nothing but a test. A test for You." which shocks me to the core. "Hundreds of people have died in this defense, and this is to test me? Why?" I ask him again to which he says "You are the one humanity needs. To remind us why we are still fighting. Which you have shown to me again and again and again."

I can feel nothing but guilt knowing this. 'So many people have died just to test me because I am being good to others ,helping them when they need? Is it a sin to help the people who are in need?' Thinking this, I couldn't control the tears coming out of my eyes and start crying going to my knees.

Looking at me in my knees, my sister and mother tries to come closer, but are stopped by Jess and are ordered to leave the wall.

They leave reluctantly as they can't disobey a direct order from their commanding officer. "I know what you are feeling now Alex, but this is for greater good. You have reached Low-E grade and all your teammates are at Mid-F. This will be helpful to clear the low grade dungeons with ease." Jack says.

"Why do we have to kill hundreds of soldiers and volunteers? To level-up? we could have done it in the wilderness." I say with tears to which he says "The government wanted to know how you will act and react in a large battle. That is why this test was conducted to face 5 E grade dungeon outbreaks."

I am utterly surprised to hear it is not 1, but 5 outbreaks we have just fought and won. My blood boiled in anger when he said it is the government that is behind this, but I can't do anything, not now. I feel like I am nothing but a bad luck to these people after the 2nd awakening.

I just leave the wall and head back home with heavy burden in my heart. I realised 2 things in the conversation with Jack. 1st is everyone in my team is a person who has awakened the 2nd time. And the next is, I am different from them in a way. Their system shows their attributes and skills as a normal system does, but for me it doesn't but I have 'Constitution' instead.

I look at my 'Status' and see my Constitution has increased by a star, but I can't feel happy because of this burden in my heart and all he had to say was 'Nothing but a test.' Which is still ringing in my ears.

They think I am kind of a special person but I have no idea why. It is not because of my 2nd awakening as it is not a rare phenomenon, 'but why am I special?' Is the only question running in my mind.

BUZZ BUZZ

My watch buzzed as I kept it in silent during the so called 'defense'. I check it and see an email from the Hunter's Guild who asks me to meet the branch manager with Mr. Cooper the next day. I am not sure why they are asking me to meet them along with him as he has nothing to do with this, or does he?
