Chapter 24: Witch Doctor
After following the townspeople, the Straw Hats arrived at a town known as Big Horn. Along the way, they learned that this island was supposedly a nameless nation. "The animals here are weird," Luffy remarked, his eyes wide with curiosity as he observed the strange creatures.
"Dalton! How are you?" the townspeople greeted the man leading the Straw Hats as they walked through the town.
"Elections?" Lucas inquired, overhearing the townspeople's conversations.
"Yes, we'll be having elections for the leader of our nation a few days from now," Dalton answered, though he looked conflicted about it.
"It seems the leader is already decided," Lucas remarked, noticing Dalton's quiet demeanor.
"Here we are. You can use that bed over there," Dalton said as they entered a building. Sanji carefully placed Nami on the bed, making sure she was resting well.
"Uh, right... I never introduced myself, have I? My name is Dalton, and I am the guard of this island," he said, introducing himself.
"I don't want to sound rude, but where is this so-called witch? Nami's condition isn't getting any better," Sanji said, his voice tinged with urgency.
"Right. The mountains that you see from those windows," Dalton pointed out. Sanji moved the curtains aside to get a look, but as soon as he did, he was met with a big snowman.
"Haha, guys, look! This is Mr. Hyper Snowman. Isn't he awesome?" Luffy and Usopp were outside, playing in the snow, laughing, and comparing their snowmen.
"I'll kill 'em," Sanji snapped. He stormed outside, dragging Luffy and Usopp back in and giving them a good knock on their heads. "This is no time to be playing," he scolded them.
"Uh..." Lucas gasped suddenly, a look of realization crossing his face.
"Hmm, what is it?" the others asked, sensing his hesitation.
He was reluctant to use healing magic on Nami because he wasn't sure if her body could handle mana. But just now, he remembered that healing her was as simple as using Clockwork. Still, they were here now, and Chopper joined during this period, so it was fine, he thought. "It's nothing," he said, shaking off his thoughts.
"As I was saying, there's a castle on top of the middle mountain. Dr. Kureha, the alleged witch, currently lives in that castle," Dalton explained.
"So you're saying we have to climb that mountain? Damn, of all the places she could've lived, it had to be on top of a mountain," Sanji groaned.
"Unfortunately, that is the best way for you to contact her. Although she does come down every now and then, and during those times, she will find patients to treat and take anything she wants from them as payment," Dalton elucidated.
"Sounds more like a pirate to me," Lucas remarked with a wry smile.
"So, a witch pirate. Maybe we can take Lucas's magic broom to the top of the mountain," Luffy suggested, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
"I don't have a magic broom, and besides, if I had one, it would only be able to support the weight of one person," Lucas said, shaking his head. "But I do have a fast way of getting to the top of the mountain," he added.
"I think we should divide into groups," Lucas proposed.
"Huh, why so?" the others questioned, puzzled.
"The others can stay and look after Nami. You all will take these; they're teleportation papers or talismans. If one person tears theirs, the others will be teleported to that person's location. We'll use these when we find the doctor," Lucas explained. The others nodded, understanding his plan.
"Cool," Luffy grinned as he held the paper, tearing it just to see how it worked. The group vanished for a second, only to reappear in the same place, Dalton's house.
"You weren't supposed to tear it now, you idiot," Sanji scolded Luffy, exasperated.
"Haa, Luffy will come with me then," Lucas decided. "Nami will stay until we reach the top of the mountain," he added. "If that's all, then we'll see you," Lucas said as he and Luffy went outside.
"So, what was the fast way you were talking about?" Luffy asked, his curiosity piqued.
Lucas smiled. "This is something I just thought of doing," he said as he split into two. His clone turned into Blocks, transforming into a catapult.
"There's no way they use that," Usopp remarked, watching them get on. "It's a good thing I didn't volunteer to go with them," he added.
Luffy and Lucas were smiling with anticipation. "They're just a bunch of idiots," Sanji remarked as the catapult launched, sending Luffy and Lucas flying towards the mountain.
"Woohooo!" Luffy laughed, the thrill of the flight filling him with joy.
"I know, right?" Lucas added, equally enjoying the ride.
"Look! There's the castle," Luffy said, holding onto his straw hat. He stretched his arm to the top of the castle and pulled himself and Lucas towards it, crashing through the roof into the castle.
"We made it, ha... Hahaha," Luffy said, laughing heartily.
"That was definitely worth it," Lucas said, and Luffy agreed, both of them catching their breath.
"Now, then let's..." Lucas began, but Luffy interrupted with an "Oops" as he accidentally tore Lucas's talisman.
"There's no helping it now," Lucas sighed, as Sanji, Usopp, Vivi, and Nami materialized next to them.
"Did you find her?" Sanji asked, taking in the sight of the castle's interior.
"We haven't started looking yet," Lucas replied, deadpan.
"Do I even need to ask?" Sanji sighed. "Whatever, let's just start looking."
The Straw Hats set off with Nami on Sanji's back, their steps quick and filled with urgency as they searched for the doctor. They entered a room filled with snow, the cold biting at their skin. Stairs led to numerous rooms in the sprawling castle, each turn filled with anticipation and worry. As they moved to the next room, they heard footsteps approaching, echoing through the icy corridors.
"Bold of you to trespass into my castle," a commanding voice resonated through the room. Dr. Kureha, the witch doctor, entered with a reindeer wearing pants and a hat by her side.
"Could you be the witch doctor?" Luffy asked, his voice a mix of hope and curiosity.
"And who's asking?" Kureha replied, her eyes sharp and scrutinizing.
"Uh... that person there, they seem to be sick," the reindeer spoke, its gaze landing on Nami, slumped over Sanji's back.
The Straw Hats were startled, their eyes widening in shock. "The food just spoke," Luffy exclaimed, giving the reindeer a chill as it realized it was being referred to as food.
"Yeah, and judging from its reaction just now, it understood what we were talking about," Usopp added, his voice filled with amazement.
"Apologies for the intrusion, but our friend is very sick right now. We came here in a rush after being told we could find a doctor here to seek your help," Lucas said as he stepped forward, his voice steady and sincere.
Silence filled the room as Kureha looked them over, her gaze lingering on each of them. She saw the earnestness in their eyes, the desperation and longing for their friend to get better.
"Follow me," Kureha said finally, her voice softening. She led them to a room where she could treat Nami.
