Volume 1 Chapter 153: Service Center
On normal days, there would still be students in the teaching building after 8 PM. However, since today was a weekend, the teaching building likely only housed diligent students in the library.
Ning Chu had rushed out in such a hurry that she hadn’t brought an umbrella. Standing in the dormitory lobby, she looked at the pitch-black rainy night outside and turned to Wen Yang with a hint of hesitation.
“Why don’t you go back first?”
“Let’s go together.” She immediately moved closer, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Wen Yang.
Although she wasn’t comfortable getting too close to Wen Yang, sharing an umbrella didn’t seem like a big deal.
Every time she passed through the lobby, her eyes would involuntarily drift to the corner room where the dormitory manager stayed. Through the window, she could once again see the petite girl inside, animatedly sharing some amusing story with the uncle.
A rare pure love subplot. Although the age gap was significant, Ning Chu had completely given up on the idea of interfering.
Mostly because the punishment for disrupting the plot was becoming harder to bear.
Walking into the pouring rain with Wen Yang, Ning Chu instinctively moved a bit closer to him. Wen Yang, in turn, tilted the umbrella more toward her.
The small folding umbrella wasn’t big enough for two people. As soon as they stepped into the rain, Wen Yang’s right shoulder was already getting wet.
“I really hate going out at night…” Ning Chu muttered. Though it wasn’t that late, the heavy rain made the night seem darker, and the campus roads were almost deserted, save for the occasional delivery rider in a raincoat.
Walking through such a rainy night might have been unsettling, but with Wen Yang by her side, she found it felt more like a leisurely stroll in the rain.
After just a few steps, her pants were already soaked. Fortunately, she was wearing slippers and didn’t have to worry about water seeping into her shoes.
“Wen Yang, let’s just top up the electricity and head back,” Ning Chu reminded him nervously, afraid he might get sidetracked. “What if we run into a ghost?”
“We won’t.”
So, he doesn’t believe in ghosts at all…
“Well, if something weird happens, just run,” she said seriously. “I’ll cover for you.”
Wen Yang glanced at her earnest little face and couldn’t help but chuckle as he nodded, “Alright, and if I don’t help you?”
“Don’t worry about me!”
Given that the female ghost hadn’t shown any violent behavior, Ning Chu wasn’t too concerned about her own safety.
But Wen Yang was a different story!
She didn’t want to see the Wen Yang she’d spent two months training becoming the ghost’s victim.
And besides, he wasn’t a match for the ghost right now! Even the battle-hardened protagonist from the novel had almost failed to exorcise the ghost.
The rain grew heavier, and Ning Chu unconsciously moved even closer to Wen Yang to avoid it.
Their arms occasionally brushed against each other. To avoid too much contact, Ning Chu stepped slightly behind him, maintaining some distance.
The school, which should have been brightly lit, looked unusually gloomy under the heavy rain. As they stepped onto the main road from the narrow dormitory path, the teaching building loomed in the distance, its outline barely visible in the dark night. Ning Chu’s expression gradually grew tense.
She had always been afraid of the dark. Now, going to the teaching building—a place haunted by a female ghost—at night made her uneasy, even with Wen Yang beside her.
Almost reflexively, she glanced at Wen Yang’s strong, well-defined arm.
Although she was tempted to hold onto it for reassurance, the overly feminine gesture made her hesitate, worried it might be misunderstood.
Noticing her nervousness, Wen Yang reached out and draped an arm around her shoulders. “If you’re scared of the dark, why did you come out at night?”
She froze for a moment, glancing at the arm resting on her shoulder. This casual, brotherly gesture didn’t make her feel uncomfortable, so she naturally leaned in closer to him.
“I didn’t feel safe letting you come alone.”
Wen Yang’s body was always a little warmer than hers. Like a small heater, simply being near him dispelled the chill she felt and calmed her nerves.
But after a few minutes, Ning Chu belatedly realized something wasn’t quite right. She looked back at the chest pressed against her back.
This doesn’t feel like a brotherly gesture at all…
Wasn’t she basically being held in his arms?
By the time she raised her head again, the teaching building was just a few steps away.
Once inside, Ning Chu quickly slipped out of Wen Yang’s hold and looked toward the service center not far away.
“Why can’t they set up online payments? What if someone runs out of electricity in the middle of the night?”
Though she’d complained about this before, she still couldn’t help but grumble again, especially as her soaked pants clung uncomfortably to her legs.
“Maybe the school administrators are just incompetent.”
Having spent so much time with Zhang Shaoqing, Wen Yang had also picked up the habit of blaming the school for everything.
He shook the umbrella, folded it up, and followed Ning Chu. “Should we borrow a couple of books from the library while we’re here?”
Though it sounded reasonable, Ning Chu shook her head vigorously. “Absolutely not!”
“Why not…?”
“Just recharge the card and let’s go back.”
Wen Yang sighed helplessly and agreed.
At the service center, he stepped into the small room and turned back to see Ning Chu standing outside, keeping watch like a sentry. Her face was taut, her gaze wary as she scanned the surroundings.
Turns out she still believes in superstitions like ghosts, even in college…
Though he didn’t quite understand, Ning Chu’s cautious demeanor was strangely adorable.
Wen Yang approached the counter, handing over the dormitory’s electricity card to the girl behind it. “Recharge, please.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred.”
As the girl took the card, their fingers accidentally brushed. The soft, cool sensation startled Wen Yang, and he reflexively pulled his hand back.
Feeling guilty, he glanced at Ning Chu, worried she might have seen and gotten jealous.
The girl at the counter was unexpectedly pretty…
Though she was part of the school’s logistics department, she looked like she was only seventeen or eighteen. Wearing a red spaghetti-strap dress, her low neckline made it impossible for Wen Yang’s gaze not to wander briefly.
It was instinctual.
Still, feeling like a guilty thief, he quickly glanced away, his face tinged with pink.
“All done.”
The girl looked up, revealing a cute round face. Smiling, she handed back the card. “Why are you blushing, little brother?”
“Uh…”
Caught off guard, Wen Yang forced an awkward smile. He reached for the card, but when he tried to pull it from her hand, it didn’t budge.
“Stay and keep me company, will you? It’s so boring here,” she teased, her tone coquettish.
He hadn’t expected this. Turning back to glance at Ning Chu still standing at the doorway, he felt a little panicked.
“I-I have stuff to do back at the dorm…”
“What could be so important? It’s lonely working the night shift all by myself,” she said with a pout.
“I…”
As time dragged on, Ning Chu turned around to check and saw Wen Yang blushing furiously as the woman behind the counter flirted with him.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she rushed over. “What’s taking so long?”
Seriously? Even here, a woman is trying to seduce Wen Yang?
Ning Chu’s gaze quickly landed on the name tag pinned to the girl’s chest.
“An An?”
Such a perfunctory name! Definitely a supporting character!
Wen Yang hastily pulled the card from An An’s fingers, nervously explaining, “We were just chatting.”
“Tsk!”
Clearly, this little virgin can’t handle it!
He might be able to deal with low-level advances, but when faced with a high-level, straightforward flirt like this girl, he completely loses his cool.
