Chapter 7: A Year Without Sex
The young alpha had not yet had time to experience the attraction of true ones, and he had every chance of becoming a wonderful father to his future children.
"Why didn't you come to the twins' birthday party? You had other things planned, too."
Amelia reacted to these words a little too sharply. She looked at him point-blank and said through clenched teeth: "I'm always busy, Alex. My weekly planner is scheduled for a month in advance."
The man noticed how a grin flashed through him and his lips curved into a contemptuous smile. He could easily imagine her wandering around nightclubs in search of a new partner willing to pay her bills and running out on dates day after day.
"It's a good thing you had the courage to show up for your grandfather's funeral", he said sarcastically.
The words coming from his lips were not a compliment. Amelia probably knew that her grandfather would mention her in his will, because they had been on pretty good terms. Well, the grandfather was the only wolf who could somehow influence the capricious girl.
"You came to him when he was still alive, right?"
The girl nodded and reached for the glass again. It was noticeable how her hands were shaking slightly, but she quickly dealt with it.
"It was the least I could do. You know how he treated me. He was kind to me, unlike my father, he always helped and supported me. And I'm just his goddaughter," she said dully, turning away from his grandson's steadfast gaze.
"The will doesn't count, of course," Alex noted.
"Yes. I didn't know that our grandfathers would do this to us. Most likely, they had their own reasons for it. I tried to find out from mine," but he was silent, as if he had taken water in his mouth and was only angry.
"Why did my grandfather do this, what do you think?" he asked, sitting down opposite her. "You and I weren't the best of friends, and after you came of age, we grew apart."
"Who knows," she shrugged. "Maybe he decided to unite the two packs this way. You know that my father doesn't have a son and a worthy successor. They won't let me be Alpha, and I don't aspire to this position. I wouldn't be surprised if the grandfathers were thinking over the terms of the will together."
Alex sat for quite a long time and watched the girl, who seemed to shrink all over. For just a moment, her bitchiness disappeared, revealing her true feelings. She loved his grandfather even more than her own family.
"On that fateful day, you were supposed to go diving with your sister, weren't you?"
Amelia looked away towards the open terrace.
"I missed the plane," she said, getting up and heading to the mirror. After examining herself from all sides, the girl continued as if nothing had happened: "I overslept after a stormy night."
"Have you ever thought about the fact that you could have died along with your sister if you had arrived at the airport on time?" Alex asked. "You could have ended up with her in the open sea, in the very epicenter of a raging storm."
She had a warm relationship with her sister. She always supported her little sister despite her heavy workload. It was she who was predicted to be the head of the Forston pack, not Amelia. Even despite the difference in strength.
Both girls were alphas, but if Amelia was a flighty child since childhood, then her sister was always balanced and very conservative. Her deceased sister was always held up as an example to her, always pointing out the mistakes she had made. Despite her difficult childhood, the girl sincerely loved her and admired her resilience.
Amelia looked sternly at the man, her eyes flashing with either anger or indifference. "You won't mind if we go back to your rules?"
"You don't like talking about Maria, do you?"
"I remember her. And I will always love her. But I don't intend to discuss her with you," the she-wolf snapped, looking at the alpha in the mirror's reflection. "You'll hardly be able to get such a privilege, even as my husband."
Alex got up from his chair and tied his tie. He adjusted the knot, looking at the girl's frozen face, and couldn't understand how real she was. It's amazing how quickly her mood changes.
"Secondly, I will not tolerate cheating. I don't want to be a laughing stock in the eyes of others," he explained. "I am ready to make concessions, but I don't want to be known as a cuckold."
"I will not cheat on you. It is not in my interests," the girl immediately responded, looking at him with cunning eyes and a sly smile. "I'll be too busy counting my money, dear."
"If you don't start behaving decently, there will be unpleasant consequences for us," Alex reminded. "One wrong move on your part, and you'll be left without the money you coveted. We'll both be obliged to remain faithful to each other, as it's written in the will. Otherwise, we'll automatically lose everything that our grandfather left us."
"You'll have to be very restrained, Alex. I don't know if you're capable of such a thing! Wolves are very amorous, after all."
"As are she-wolves, Amelia."
The young girl threw her hair back over her face and said quietly: "To be honest, I find it hard to believe that you're capable of agreeing to a celibate dinner," she noted. "By the way, who's your current lover? Are you still messing around with Luciana, or is there a new victim?"
Alex pressed his lips together for a moment as if he wanted to hold back a sharp answer:
"A year without sex is too long for both of us, Amelia. I still can't understand why we can't try something sweet. Why are you against it?"
The young she-wolf took a deep breath and rolled her eyes. She liked Alex, she was drawn to him, but he would push her away as soon as he found out about her inferiority.
