Unexpected Destined Mate

Chapter 9: Engagement

Alex moved his chair, giving the girl the opportunity to sit down at the table. They were given menus, and a well-trained waiter in a snow-white shirt put a bucket of chilled champagne on the table.

Amelia looked at the bottles Lku with caution. She had already managed to drink enough alcohol and did not want to touch it again. In complete silence, the attentive waiter filled the glasses and hastily retreated.

The girl watched from under her lowered eyelashes as Alex took his glass and grinned.

"Let's drink to the first year of our family life."

Amelia gave him an ironic look: "Don't forget, Alex, only one year and no more!"

"Really? What if we like it? What if this marriage turns out to be mutually beneficial even more than we imagine?"

The girl abruptly leaned back in her chair and gave Alex a look full of distrust.

"Are you serious right now?"

The young alpha flashed a toothy smile. If Amelia had not known him since childhood, she could have assumed that he liked such an idea, but...

"I'm teasing you," Alex explained, watching the emotions of the girl sitting opposite. "In September of next year, you will get your money, and I will get the land. And we will run away, don't worry."

Amelia tried to keep her emotions under control. She had no idea why his relatives had chosen her as a bride for the future Alpha of the Silver clan at that time. Or did they know that they were a true couple? Although it was unlikely.

At first, Amelia herself did not really understand why she was so drawn to Alex, and when she finally understood, she put a lot of effort into hiding the true connection that had formed with everyone. Knowing her inferiority, the girl did everything so that she would not be considered a potential bride for Alex.

Amelia took the menu and, biting her lip, began to study it intently. She hated eating out to the point of trembling and avoided going to restaurants or cafes in every possible way. But today she had to take this step because the public is not asleep. They need proof of engagement.

The girl never suffered from anorexia and was naturally thin. But after the death of her older sister, she felt very bad. Not only mentally, but also physically. No one cared about the little girl Amelia, who was melting away more and more every day. In the end, it was Alex's grandfather who forced the girl to go to a specialized clinic, otherwise she would not have lasted long.

Now, sitting opposite Alex, the girl stares at the menu and does not know what to order, since she cannot read a single line. But Alex must not guess about this. The solution, oddly enough, was found completely unexpectedly. Loudly slamming the menu folder, she put it aside.

"Why don't you order for me?" she suggested.

Alex arched an ironic eyebrow at her statement.

"And you?"

"I've never been here, and you, apparently, are a frequent customer of this restaurant and know the cuisine well."

A wrinkle appeared between his brows, but he silently ordered two. When the waiter left, Alex thoughtfully pressed his lips together and continued to study the girl sitting opposite him.

"Do you see your father often?" he asked unexpectedly.

Amelia continued to sit at the table and play with the stem of her champagne glass. Alex noticed that the girl did it unconsciously, as if in her thoughts she was not with him now, but somewhere far away. The feeling of bitterness and loss broke through the thick armor that she had erected around herself. He had never seen her in such a state.

"Amelia?"

"Everything is fine," she tried to smile. "Sometimes he comes to see me with his girlfriend. The last of his lovers is only a couple of years older than me. And I think they will soon become a couple. Dad wants a son," she swallowed loudly. "He has been saying this for many years."

Alex caught barely noticeable notes of regret in her cold-blooded statement.

"And mother? Do you remember her?"

The girl smiled sadly.

"She was a beautiful she-wolf. Many who knew her well say that I look a lot like her. That's probably why my father and I don't get along. Mom was a very loving woman and would always hug us tightly whenever she passed by. She read books, sang, danced with us, and loved to do funny hairstyles."

Amelia finished speaking and the room fell silent. But it didn't bother the girl, the young she-wolf went into her memories, only occasionally sighing sadly.

"Mom loved us. She loved us. I never doubted it, not even for a split second."

Alex knew little about the death of Louise Forston. For a long time, there were rumors about her suicide, which she decided to commit after her latest human lover refused to leave his wife. They also said that Amelia's father was not an ideal husband and father and went on a rampage when his youngest daughter was born.

Louise's labor was difficult and doctors had to remove her uterus to stop the bleeding. The situation was confusing and no one knows where the truth is and where the lie is now.

The reporters, of course, used rumors to their advantage, wanting to increase their ratings on sensations and scandals. Alex and his brothers knew firsthand what it was like when someone interfered in your life.

Now in front of him sat not a hardened socialite, but a girl confused in herself. Amelia was much younger than Alex. There were decades of difference between them, but sometimes it seemed to him that the young she-wolf had managed to feel on her skin the whole spectrum of pain and disappointment that life loves to give us.

"What will you do after receiving the inheritance?" he suddenly asked the girl.
