Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Whispers of Betrayal
The journey to the next Seal began at dawn. The cold morning air nipped at the Guardians as they moved forward, leaving the eerie Forgotten City far behind. The atmosphere among the group was tense; the weight of Emily’s dream hung unspoken between them. But they all knew—something was different now.
Emily hadn’t told the others about the Guardian’s warning in her dream. She wasn’t sure if it was fear of sounding paranoid or the fact that part of her didn’t want to believe it herself. But the words echoed in her mind as they trekked through the barren landscape.
*The Seals… they are traps.*
As they traveled, the terrain grew more rugged and unforgiving. The sky above remained a dark, stormy gray, and the wind howled through the jagged rocks surrounding them, making it hard to hear anything beyond their own footsteps.

**Tension Rises**
Hours into their journey, the group came to a natural break near a canyon. The vast chasm stretched endlessly ahead, with only a narrow stone bridge connecting the two sides. It was ancient, crumbling in places, and looked far from safe.
"We should stop here for a bit," Alex suggested, wiping sweat from his brow. "We’ve been moving nonstop since sunrise. We need to rest and make sure we can cross that bridge safely."
The others nodded in agreement, but Emily remained silent, her gaze fixated on the bridge. Something about it felt… wrong.
While the others began to settle down, Lucas moved over to Emily’s side. "You’ve been quiet ever since we left the city. What’s on your mind?"
Emily hesitated before answering. "That Guardian we fought… I keep thinking about what happened to them. What if we’re walking into the same fate?"
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean? We’re not corrupted. We’re still ourselves."
"For now," Emily muttered, more to herself than to him. She turned to face Lucas, her expression serious. "There’s something you should know. I had a dream last night… a warning, I think. The Guardian we fought said that the Seals aren’t just keys to power—they’re traps."
Lucas frowned. "A dream? You think it was a vision?"
"I don’t know. But it felt real, more than any dream I’ve ever had before."
Before Lucas could respond, a shout came from behind them. "Hey! You two need to see this!" Jake’s voice rang out across the rocky plateau.
Emily and Lucas rushed over to where the others had gathered near the edge of the canyon. Mia and Alex stood side by side, staring down into the chasm below, their faces pale.
"What is it?" Emily asked.
Jake pointed down into the canyon, his face filled with confusion and fear. "Look."
Emily leaned over and peered down into the depths. Her heart skipped a beat. Far below, barely visible in the shadows of the canyon, was the twisted figure of another Guardian. It was crawling along the jagged rocks, its body distorted and broken, much like the one they had fought in the Forgotten City.
"It’s another corrupted Guardian," Mia whispered, her voice trembling. "How did it end up down there?"
"It’s like the Voidborn have been here too," Alex said grimly. "This corruption… it’s spreading faster than we thought."
Emily’s mind raced. Could this be another part of the trap the dream had warned her about? The more they moved toward the Seals, the more danger they seemed to invite. And now, it was clear that the corruption wasn’t just tied to the Seals—they were in the heart of it.

**Doubts and Divisions**
As the group made camp for the evening, the atmosphere grew heavier. Tension simmered beneath the surface, unspoken but undeniable. The appearance of the corrupted Guardian had unsettled everyone.
Later that night, as the others gathered around the campfire, Jake broke the uneasy silence. "I don’t know about the rest of you, but this whole situation feels like we’re walking straight into a trap. That thing down in the canyon? It’s just more proof that we’re not in control of this mission."
Alex shot him a sharp look. "We knew from the start that this wouldn’t be easy. We’ve faced the Voidborn before, and we’ll face them again. We’re Guardians—that’s what we do."
"Yeah, but we’ve never seen corruption like this," Jake countered, frustration creeping into his voice. "The Guardians who came before us, the ones who were supposed to protect the Seals, are being turned into monsters. What makes you think we’ll be any different?"
Lucas leaned back, arms crossed. "We don’t have a choice, Jake. If we don’t secure the Seals, the Voidborn will. And then it won’t just be corrupted Guardians we’re up against—it’ll be the end of everything."
"Exactly," Mia added, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "We can’t turn back now."
But Jake wasn’t convinced. He stood abruptly, glaring at the others. "I’m not saying we should give up, but we need to be smart about this. Rushing into these Seals without understanding what’s really happening is going to get us all killed."
Emily, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up. "Jake’s right. We need to be cautious. There’s more going on here than we understand."
Alex’s eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Emily hesitated, glancing around at the others. "I didn’t want to say anything earlier, but… I had a dream. A vision, maybe. The Guardian we fought in the city warned me that the Seals are traps—set to draw us in, to lure us into something far worse."
The camp fell silent as her words sank in.
"Why didn’t you tell us sooner?" Mia asked, her voice tinged with concern.
"I wasn’t sure if I should," Emily admitted. "But after seeing that Guardian in the canyon… I’m starting to think there’s truth to the warning."
Alex clenched his jaw, his expression hard. "Whether it’s true or not, we have a mission. And until we know for sure, we can’t afford to hesitate."
Emily nodded, though her heart remained heavy. The dream, the warning, the corrupted Guardians—they all pointed to something far darker than any of them had anticipated. And though Alex was right, their mission couldn’t be abandoned, she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were walking straight into the heart of a trap.
As the fire crackled and the night deepened, the Guardians sat in uneasy silence, each lost in their own thoughts. The road ahead was growing more dangerous by the day, and they would need to be more vigilant than ever.
But one thing was clear—they could no longer trust that the Seals were simply keys to power. There was something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface.
And the deeper they ventured, the closer they came to discovering what it was.
