Veil Of The Abyss

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Cursed Bridge

The air was thick with tension as the Guardians prepared to cross the ancient stone bridge. The wind had picked up, howling through the canyon like a distant wail, and the dark clouds above seemed to gather ominously. The narrow path before them stretched like a daunting test of will, its crumbling stones barely clinging to the edges of the towering cliffs on either side.

Emily stood at the edge of the bridge, staring down into the abyss below. Her mind swirled with the warning from her dream and the unsettling sight of the corrupted Guardian in the canyon. She could still hear the Guardian’s distorted voice in her head: *The Seals are traps. You’re walking into doom.*

Lucas came to her side, his expression grim. "Are you ready?" he asked, his voice calm despite the anxiety in his eyes.

Emily nodded, though every instinct inside her screamed to turn back. "We have no choice, do we?"

"No," Lucas said softly. "We don’t."

Behind them, the rest of the group was preparing for the treacherous crossing. Alex, ever the leader, checked their supplies, ensuring everything was secure before they ventured onto the unstable path. Mia, always watchful, paced back and forth, her eyes never leaving the horizon. Jake, however, seemed the most unsettled, his earlier frustration bubbling into nervous energy.

"This bridge looks like it’s about to fall apart," Jake muttered under his breath, eyeing the weathered stones warily. "One wrong step, and we’re done for."

Alex shot him a sharp glance. "We’ll make it across if we stay focused. There’s no other way."

**A Dangerous Crossing**

One by one, the Guardians stepped onto the bridge. Emily could feel the stone shifting beneath her feet, the unsettling creak of the ancient structure groaning under the weight of each step. The wind seemed determined to push them off course, whipping at their cloaks and tugging at their balance.

"Keep close," Alex instructed, his voice raised over the wind. "Don’t look down."

But looking down was inevitable. The depths of the canyon stretched out endlessly below, a sea of shadows that seemed to move and twist as if alive. Emily’s heart pounded in her chest. Every step felt like a gamble, each one more precarious than the last.

Halfway across, the bridge began to tremble violently. Stones cracked and fell into the abyss, disappearing into the darkness below.

"Hurry!" Mia shouted from the rear of the group, her voice tinged with panic. "It’s collapsing!"

The Guardians quickened their pace, but as they did, the wind howled even stronger, and the stones beneath them continued to crumble. Emily felt the ground beneath her feet give way for a brief moment, her heart leaping into her throat as she teetered on the edge.

"Emily!" Lucas grabbed her arm, steadying her before she could fall. His grip was strong, reassuring. "Stay with me!"

"I’m fine," Emily gasped, though her legs trembled beneath her.

Just as they neared the other side, a deep, bone-chilling roar echoed from the canyon below. The sound reverberated through the air, causing everyone to freeze in place.

"What was that?" Jake whispered, his voice barely audible over the howling wind.

Emily’s blood ran cold. The roar was unlike anything she had ever heard—deep, guttural, and filled with a menacing rage. The Guardians exchanged worried glances as another roar, louder this time, shook the very stones beneath them.

Mia’s eyes widened as she pointed toward the darkness below. "Look!"

From the shadows of the canyon, a massive shape began to rise. At first, it was difficult to make out, but as the creature ascended, its monstrous form became clear. Twisted, grotesque, and covered in thick, dark scales, the beast emerged from the depths. Its eyes glowed with a fierce, malevolent light, and its enormous claws dug into the sides of the canyon as it climbed toward them.

"It's a Voidborn!" Alex shouted, drawing his sword. "We need to move—now!"

---

**The Beast Unleashed**

Panic erupted among the group. The Voidborn beast let out another deafening roar as it lunged toward the bridge, its enormous claws smashing into the stone and sending debris flying in every direction. The Guardians scrambled to the other side, but the bridge was collapsing faster than they could run.

Emily’s heart raced as she and Lucas sprinted toward the end of the bridge. Stones fell away beneath their feet, and she could feel the heat of the Voidborn’s presence behind her. Its dark aura seemed to sap the energy from the air, leaving a cold emptiness in its wake.

"Go!" Lucas urged, pushing Emily forward as the creature’s claws came dangerously close to swiping at them.

Just as they reached the safety of solid ground, the Voidborn slammed its massive body onto the bridge. The entire structure gave way in a deafening crash, sending the beast plummeting back into the canyon below. Its enraged roar echoed for several moments before fading into the distance.

The Guardians collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath, their bodies trembling from the narrow escape. The wind had died down, and the canyon was eerily silent once more.

"That… was too close," Mia panted, clutching her chest. "We’re lucky we made it."

"Luck won’t save us forever," Jake muttered darkly, his eyes still fixed on the spot where the Voidborn had fallen. "There’s something down there—something worse than the Voidborn we’ve faced before."

Emily remained silent, her thoughts racing. The warning from her dream rang louder in her mind now than ever before. The Seals were traps, and this Voidborn… it felt like just the beginning.

Alex stood, wiping the dust from his clothes, his expression serious. "We can’t afford to lose focus. There’s still a long way to go, and we’re going to face worse than this. But we need to stay together."

Emily nodded, though doubt continued to gnaw at her. How much longer could they push forward before the weight of the traps, the corruption, and the Voidborn became too much?

As the Guardians gathered themselves and prepared to continue, Emily stole one last glance at the canyon behind them. The Voidborn was gone, but the darkness it had emerged from still lingered, an ever-present reminder that the worst was yet to come.

The journey was growing more perilous with every step, and Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that the true danger wasn’t the Voidborn, but the Seals themselves. Something was waiting for them, something far more dangerous than any creature they had encountered.

And whatever it was, it was growing closer with every passing day.
