Chapter 6: A Hydra Snake To Slay
The shield shuddered under the force of the enforcer's relentless energy blasts, scattering crimson sparks into the night air. Wanda planted her feet, her arms trembling from the strain of maintaining her chaos magic. Her breath came in sharp gasps, but her eyes burned with defiance. The battlefield around her was a mess of overturned trees, charred earth, and the occasional groan of a defeated Hydra soldier.
"You're stalling," the symbiote coiled tightly around her wrist whispered in its smooth, melodic tone. "Focus. Let the scepter guide you. It is more than a weapon—it is your key."
Wanda's gaze flicked to the Chitauri Scepter, its faint glow pulsating like a heartbeat. She could feel it, the way it harmonized with her magic, amplifying her strength and sharpening her focus. It felt… right, in a way that almost unsettled her. But she didn't have time to question it. The enforcer was advancing.
"I hope you've got more in your arsenal," Wanda muttered, adjusting her grip on the scepter. "Because this is starting to feel a little one-sided."
The enforcer stepped forward, his massive energy cannon crackling ominously. His armor gleamed even under the dim moonlight, the Hydra emblem emblazoned on his chest like a badge of pride. His voice, distorted by the modulator in his helmet, was deep and grating.
"Wanda Maximoff," he growled. "You have been deemed a threat to global stability. Surrender now, and your execution will be swift."
Wanda tilted her head, as if considering the offer. "Wow, 'global stability,' huh? I didn't realize I was so important. Do I get a plaque for that?"
The enforcer hesitated for a fraction of a second, clearly unprepared for her sarcasm. Wanda smirked, twirling the scepter lazily in one hand.
"Here's a counteroffer," she said, her tone dripping with mockery. "You take your shiny tin can and march it back to whatever hole Hydra crawled out of. I promise not to turn you into scrap metal."
The enforcer raised his cannon, its charge building with a high-pitched whine. "Your arrogance will be your downfall."
Wanda sighed, rolling her eyes. "Is that supposed to scare me? Because I've got to tell you, I've faced bigger egos—and better insults."
The blast roared toward her like a comet, but Wanda was ready. She raised a glowing shield of chaos magic, deflecting the energy into the ground with a loud crack. The enforcer fired again, and she sidestepped, the heat of the blast grazing her cheek.
"Seriously, is that all you've got?" she called out, circling him with measured steps. "For an 'elite enforcer,' you're kind of a letdown. Did they pull you from Hydra's B-team?"
The enforcer growled, charging forward. Wanda darted to the side, her crimson magic flaring as she hurled a blast of energy at his feet. The ground erupted, sending him stumbling backward.
"Careful," she quipped, her smirk widening. "You're going to trip and hurt yourself. Then where will Hydra be without their golden boy?"
The enforcer steadied himself, his cannon swiveling toward her. "Enough games. You will fall."
Wanda raised an eyebrow, mock-impressed. "Ooh, ominous. Did you rehearse that line, or does it come with the suit?"
He fired again, but this time Wanda didn't just dodge. She extended her magic through the scepter, catching the energy mid-air and redirecting it back at him. The blast struck his armor, sending sparks flying and forcing him to stagger.
"Oops," Wanda said, feigning innocence. "Did I do that?"
The enforcer roared in frustration, abandoning his cannon in favor of brute force. He charged, swinging a massive armored fist at her. Wanda ducked, the wind from the blow ruffling her hair. She retaliated with a sweeping arc of chaos magic, but he raised a shield, deflecting her attack.
"Not bad," Wanda admitted, circling him again. "But I've seen better. Honestly, I'm starting to think Hydra's standards are slipping."
He lunged again, his speed surprising for someone his size. Wanda barely had time to react, raising her shield to block his punch. The impact sent her skidding backward, her boots digging into the dirt.
"Okay, that was rude," she said, shaking her arms to ease the sting. "Didn't your Hydra trainers teach you manners?"
The enforcer didn't respond. He swung again, and Wanda dropped low, sweeping his legs with a burst of magic. He crashed to the ground with a satisfying thud, but before she could capitalize, he rolled to his feet, his cannon back in his hands.
"You talk too much," he growled, firing a rapid volley of blasts.
"And you don't talk enough," Wanda shot back, weaving between the blasts with fluid precision. "Come on, lighten up! What's the point of a fight if you can't enjoy it?"
She waited for an opening, her magic simmering at her fingertips. The enforcer was relentless, but his attacks were growing predictable. As he fired another blast, Wanda deflected it into a nearby tree, using the distraction to close the distance between them.
With a swift motion, she slammed the scepter into his side, the force amplified by her chaos magic. The enforcer staggered, his cannon sparking as it hit the ground. Wanda didn't let up. She spun, her magic coiling around her like a storm, and struck him again, this time aiming for the weak points in his armor.
"Pro tip," she said, her voice steady despite her exertion. "Maybe don't put all your faith in fancy gadgets. They tend to break when you hit them hard enough."
The enforcer roared, swinging wildly. Wanda dodged, her movements graceful and precise. She retaliated with a concentrated blast of chaos magic, striking his knee and forcing him to kneel. His armor groaned under the pressure, cracks spidering across its surface.
"What's the matter?" Wanda asked, circling him like a predator. "Running out of tricks? Or is my sarcasm finally getting to you?"
The enforcer lunged one last time, his movements fueled more by rage than strategy. Wanda sidestepped effortlessly, raising the scepter high. Her magic surged, a blinding torrent of crimson energy that slammed into his chest. The force sent him sprawling, his armor collapsing in on itself as the energy overwhelmed him.
He struggled to rise, his helmet cracked and his voice weak. "You… can't… win," he rasped. "Cut off one head, and two more will take its place."
Wanda smirked, twirling the scepter in her hand. "Is that so? Good. I could use the exercise."
With a final burst of chaos magic, she struck him down, the glow of her power illuminating the battlefield. The enforcer's armor crumpled, sparks sputtering before finally going dark. The silence that followed was deafening.
Eska and Dmitri emerged from the treeline, their weapons drawn and their faces smeared with dirt and sweat. Eska let out a low whistle as she surveyed the scene.
"Remind me never to get on your bad side," she said, her tone equal parts impressed and wary.
Wanda wiped a strand of hair from her face, her chest heaving. "He had it coming."
Dmitri knelt by the enforcer's remains, his expression grim. "This was no ordinary soldier. Hydra's upping their game."
"Good," Wanda said, her voice steady despite the exhaustion in her limbs. She tightened her grip on the scepter, its glow pulsing faintly. "Let them send whoever they want. I'll take them all down."
Eska chuckled, though there was an edge of unease in her voice. "Let's just hope the rest of us can keep up."
As they made their way back to the base, Wanda couldn't shake the symbiote's whispers from her mind. They were louder now, more insistent, urging her to embrace the scepter and the power it offered.
"You are learning," it murmured, its tone smooth and almost soothing. "But there is more to come. Much more."
Wanda glanced down at the scepter, its faint glow reflecting her crimson eyes. Hydra had thought they could control her, bend her to their will. Instead, they had created their greatest enemy.
