Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Joining the Society
After about an hour, Jolord finally appeared in the hall.
"Haha, Richard! I knew you could make it through."
Jolord walked over to Richard and gave him a hearty pat on the shoulder, his joy evident.
For Jolord, nothing was better than seeing his student safely ascend to wizardry.
Richard scratched his head. His brain had automatically dulled the memory of his time in the Dark Night of the Soul as a self-protection mechanism, so recalling it now only brought back feelings of boredom.
"Let's not dwell on that," Jolord waved a hand, signaling Richard not to reminisce.
"Now that you're a wizard, enjoy the life that comes with it."
With that, the two left the working layer.
The commercial layer was as bustling as ever, but now Richard felt differently as he walked through it.
"So this is what it feels like to be a wizard?"
Richard observed the chained otherworldly slaves around him. Before becoming a wizard, even with their chains, he felt they could easily kill him.
But now, Richard only found these creatures to be weak.
This shift in self-perception excited Richard.
Upon arriving at the commercial layer, Jolord didn't immediately take Richard to the residential layer but instead led him to a shop.
"Put on your wizard robe; this shop doesn't allow apprentices," Jolord instructed.
Richard complied, pulling out the robe issued by the Tower of Truth.
The robe's design resembled that of an apprentice's, but the original silver pentagram on the chest had been replaced with a gear-adorned heart.
Taking this opportunity, Jolord explained the differences between the various school symbols.
"The five major schools each have their symbol. Our Alchemy School's symbol is the gear heart, representing machinery and flesh. The Necromancy School uses a golden ouroboros, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. The Evocation School has a golden pentagram, representing the mastery of the elements. The Soul School's symbol is a half-real, half-illusory brain, representing mind and soul. Lastly, the Curse School uses a blood-stained cross, symbolizing the first curse in wizard history—the Blood Cross."
"What about dual-school wizards?" Richard asked.
Ellie's mentor, Susanna, was a dual-school wizard of the Curse and Evocation Schools.
"Dual-school wizards display both symbols, with gold indicating the primary school and silver the secondary."
With his wizard robe on, Richard and Jolord entered the shop, which shocked Richard with its wares.
"Aren't these people?"
Richard was startled by the humanoid creatures caged around him.
While the wizarding world allowed slavery, it was limited to non-humans; human slaves were not permitted internally.
"Look closer," Jolord calmly pointed out scales on one slave's body. "These are demi-humans, hybrids created by wizards who couldn't control themselves."
"Demi-humans aren't recognized by the wizarding world, so they're considered outsiders."
"What about wizards who undergo bloodline fusion?" Richard couldn't help but ask. "Their children would also have mixed blood."
"That depends on whether those wizards are willing to spend magic stones," Jolord explained. "By spending magic stones to purify the bloodline, these demi-humans can become part of the wizarding world.
But clearly, the wizards who created these demi-humans don't plan to spend that money."
Richard paused, then asked, "Do these people have the same rights as outsiders?"
"A bit better," Jolord said. "Humanoids align more with wizard aesthetics. These demi-humans are likely to spend their lives as servants in a wizard's lab, rather than being used as experimental materials or food.
I brought you here to pick two demi-human servants, but if you don't want to, that's fine."
Richard looked around at the demi-humans, his emotions settling.
As a Black Wizard, Richard had killed many pure-blooded humans. While these demi-humans appeared pitiful, they didn't quite stir his sympathy.
"Do any of these demi-humans have skills? I'm looking for a cook," Richard said calmly.
Enjoying good food brings an involuntary sense of happiness, a great way to relax. Although food was no longer necessary as a wizard, Richard still wanted to enjoy meals when possible.
Jolord smiled.
"Of course, there are."
...
After browsing the demi-human shop, Richard selected two female demi-human slaves, which cost Jolord forty magic essences.
Both had average intelligence, with beast-like ears atop their heads, appearing youthful and cute. One was skilled in cooking various ingredients, while the other had a strong physique and precise body control, useful for handling alchemical materials.
Returning to the residential area, Richard no longer needed Jolord's help to fly.
Taking a deep breath, Richard activated the cells throughout his body.
These cells greedily absorbed magical energy from the air, channeling it internally and converting it into magical feedback under the guidance of his mental strength.
Once a being's physique surpassed fifty, the body would naturally form an energy cycle to sustain itself.
Additionally, Richard's mental strength had evolved.
Now, when Richard extended his mental strength toward the sky, it reached fifty meters, far beyond the few meters it previously spanned.
This change marked a qualitative shift in his mental strength. If his prior mental strength was unrefined iron ore, it was now forged steel.
With his mental strength at fifty, Richard could maintain magical feedback at nine times the capacity of a mental strength of 49.9!
"How does it feel to have your life leap?" Jolord asked.
"Amazing!" Richard shouted with excitement.
Following Jolord, Richard arrived at the Black Tower Wizard Academy's community on the second floor of the residential layer, where many wizards from the academy resided.
Entering the community, Richard felt the familiar presence of the Black Tower Wizard Academy.
All the wizard buildings resembled smaller versions of the Central Black Tower, evoking a sense of being back at the academy.
Arriving at one such tower, Jolord knocked on the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
A demi-human servant opened it.
"Please, come in, Wizards."
"Whose wizard tower is this?" Richard asked curiously.
"Take a guess?"
Richard looked around the reception hall.
"I can't tell, but I guess it's not Senior Chax's."
"Oh?" Jolord raised an eyebrow, "Why not Chax's?"
Richard pointed to the empty table in the hall.
"Senior Chax's hall would never be without drinks."
"Haha, true."
Before long, a familiar figure descended the stairs briskly.
"Richard!"
Seeing her, Richard recognized the long-missed figure as his senior sister, Anna.
"Senior Anna, long time no see."
The two embraced, and Jolord remarked from the side:
"You younger ones have such strong bonds, all three becoming wizards in succession. The previous ones had too long gaps, so they didn't have much connection."
After the embrace, they all took their seats, and Jolord pulled an owl from his magic pouch, speaking to it.
"Chax, come over to Anna's. Your junior brother has become a wizard."
Soon, a stout figure entered the tower.
"Hey, junior! I knew you could make it!"
Saying this, Chax opened his arms, and they embraced.
With everyone present, demi-human servants poured them some tea.
The tea was fragrant, with a calming effect, clearly from enchanted plants.
"Senior sister, you're playing favorites," Chax complained after tasting the tea. "I've been here a few times, always drinking regular tea.
Now that the junior's here, you're using your special magic tea."
Anna glared at him, "Regular tea is enough for you, you drunkard. Can you even appreciate magic tea?"
"Why wouldn't I? Senior sister, you're just biased..."
Watching the two bicker, Jolord tapped the table.
"Behave, you two. I'm here to discuss something important."
The two quieted down, turning their attention to Jolord.
"Now that all of you are here, it's time to discuss joining the society," Jolord began. "The Golden Dawn Society is an alchemy school wizard society.
During regular academic salons, society members share alchemical experiences and offer paid assistance in solving problems.
It's very beneficial for you novice wizards.
Joining the society requires recommendations from five veteran members, and I have friends in the wizarding world, so that's not an issue.
However, joining also requires sufficient intelligence.
You must demonstrate your achievements, as no one can assist you with this."
Jolord turned to Richard.
"Richard, creating a strategic-level device as an apprentice shows your intelligence is sufficient. But as for you two..."
Jolord looked at his other two students.
"Your work doesn't quite meet the mark. Anna, you've been a wizard for over a decade, right? What have you researched and achieved in that time?"
Anna's face flushed. She had indeed been a bit lax since becoming a wizard.
Next to her, Chax seemed unfazed, but Jolord glared at him.
"Chax, you aren't just lax—you're wasting time!"
Jolord pulled a wand from his magic pouch and tapped Chax on the head twice, angrily.
"Don't think I can't control you now that you're a wizard!"
After scolding Chax, Jolord stood up.
"I've laid out the situation. It's up to you to decide. If you choose to join other societies, I won't stop you. Some of your senior brothers and sisters have joined different societies."
Turning to Richard, Jolord asked:
"Richard, what do you plan to do?"
"Me?" Richard stood up, "I definitely choose to join the Golden Dawn Society."
