Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Apprentice War (Part 7)
For wizards, construction is not a daunting task.
What requires extensive materials like bricks, stones, and mortar for ordinary people can be achieved by wizards with a simple Earth Wall spell, enhanced with enchantments for reinforcement, resulting in a structure superior to any mundane construction.
Following the plan, the apprentices cleared all vegetation within a 200-meter radius of the resource point and used spells like "Mud to Stone" and "Stone to Mud" to level and harden the ground. They then constructed a rough wall around the perimeter using the Earth Wall spell.
The felled trees were repurposed to build wooden cabins, as the war promised to be protracted, and proper accommodations were necessary.
During the construction, the fire giant concluded its battle, having captured the fire elemental bird and extracted its elemental core.
Elemental cores significantly benefit elemental creatures, accelerating their growth. After consuming the bird's core, the fire giant's power surged, nearing the level of an extreme apprentice.
Once the wall was up, the Alchemy apprentices began the enchantment process to strengthen it against elemental magic attacks from the white wizard apprentices.
Next came the trap setup.
Three kilometers outside the resource point, Alchemy apprentices started laying down magical arrays.
As black wizards, these apprentices had a knack for setting traps. They densely laid various insidious and concealed magic arrays in the forest, ensuring that once activated, any white wizard caught would be thoroughly ensnared.
Through managing the apprentices, Richard gained deeper insights into warfare and recognized the limitations of black wizards.
Black wizards, focused on personal power enhancement, often neglected supportive spells. When constructing the wall, only about thirty out of three hundred apprentices knew the Earth Wall spell.
That was at least one useful Earth Wall spell.
When Richard planned to build a reservoir for water supply within the camp, not a single apprentice knew the spell to create clean water.
If Richard needed spells like Ice Spike, Blizzard, or Ice Fog for combat, plenty of apprentices would step forward. But for non-combat spells like creating clean water, none had the knowledge.
This led to the failure of some of Richard's plans. They had to rely on the forest's river for water.
From this realization, Richard inferred the strengths of the white wizards.
White wizards, trained for corps-style combat, likely had specialized training in certain areas. For example, they might have a group dedicated to constructing fortifications and another focused on combat.
The advantage of this specialized training is its efficiency. Students with talent in specific areas are selected and trained accordingly in wizard academies, maximizing their potential.
While initially leading to a narrow skill set, this approach produces wizards who excel in their specialized areas compared to black wizards.
If this hypothesis holds, then Void and Annihilation Academies are in a precarious position, Richard thought, gazing in their direction.
Unlike Black Tower Wizard Academy, Void and Annihilation were advancing on the white wizards.
And these white wizards had fortifications.
Even if they were incompetent, with fortification support, they would put up significant resistance.
This was bad news for the black wizards.
Fortifications could effectively reduce white wizard casualties, and war would temper them, making them more mature and honing their coordination.
If the two academies failed to capture the point, they would inadvertently train the white wizards.
"I must see for myself. If the white wizards are as I suspect, I need to adjust my strategy."
Frowning, Richard shifted his perspective to Foggy, preparing to observe from above.
...
"Sir, one more kilometer ahead is the white wizards' resource point," a scouting black wizard reported. "They've completed the wall and seem to be setting up magical array traps."
"Good, halt the advance," Anderson ordered.
Anderson was skeptical of Richard's intelligence.
By black wizard instinct, he mistrusted information from strangers. However, the corpses littering the resource point didn't lie, nor did the number of Black Tower apprentices.
If the white wizards weren't as weak as Richard claimed, such results wouldn't have been possible.
Yet, something felt off to Anderson.
Aldo of Annihilation Academy shared similar sentiments.
"Something's wrong. We must be ready for a retreat during the attack," Aldo murmured, eyeing the distant white wizard resource point.
He summoned several Alchemy apprentices.
"Prepare some triggerable magical arrays."
"Yes, boss."
Once both sides were positioned, Anderson and Aldo coordinated their attack timing and strategy.
Anderson's Void Academy would attack from the north, while Aldo's Annihilation Academy would strike from the south.
Neither direction had completed their magical array traps, with many apprentices still working on them.
Striking now would catch them off guard.
Checking his pocket watch, Anderson planted his sword into the ground and clasped his hands in prayer.
"My Lord, today I offer you victory as sacrifice, hoping for your blessings."
Finished, Anderson transformed, radiating the fervor of a zealot, eyes filled with fanaticism and devotion.
"Void Academy, follow me! Today, we offer victory to our Lord!"
Simultaneously, Aldo of Annihilation Academy launched his attack.
As a necromancy apprentice, Aldo excelled at summoning the undead.
His magical pouch contained the bones of three Tier 1 creatures, purchased at great expense from the wizarding market. Once reanimated, their power would reach senior apprentice level, posing a significant threat even to extreme apprentices.
For this battle, Aldo reanimated all three.
With ghostly blue soul flames igniting in their eye sockets, the three Tier 1 skeletons returned to the world.
"My Lord."
The skeletons bowed slightly to Aldo.
Satisfied, Aldo commanded them to lead the charge.
Unaware of the impending conflict, the white wizards continued setting magical traps.
Until the battle began.
"Sir! Conqueror, sir!"
A white wizard burst into the room where Orey was strategizing.
"What is it? Why the panic? Are the black wizards attacking?" Orey asked, frowning.
The reporting wizard nodded vigorously, shouting,
"Sir, the black wizards are attacking!"
"What!"
Orey shot up, shoving the messenger aside and rushing outside.
Spell impacts echoed, plunging the resource point into chaos.
"Damn it, everyone stop!"
Orey soared into the air, bellowing at the panicked apprentices below.
"Now! All apprentices, follow my command! Form up in Formation One, prepare to engage!
Any retreating apprentices will be considered deserters!
As your commander, I am authorized to execute them!"
