Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Apprentice War (Part 11)
At the Frostwind Academy camp, Greg was barely holding on. His earthen armor was nearly depleted, but upon hearing the shout of "Reinforcements from Keeper Academy!" the black wizards from Annihilation Academy began to retreat.
"Reinforcements? Keeper Academy?" Greg glanced back to see a white wizard corps advancing slowly toward him.
"What a disappointment." Aldo sneered at the sight of the Keeper Academy's white wizard corps and withdrew his undead forces. He wasn't arrogant enough to face an entire white wizard corps head-on.
Greg's dire situation was resolved.
"Greg, I need Frostwind Academy's support."
Orey wasted no time upon meeting Greg, going straight to the point.
"What support?" Greg, reverting to his normal size, looked exhausted. The battle had clearly taken its toll on him.
"I need you to rally Frostwind Academy's apprentices to pressure the retreating black wizards with us."
"Pressure them?" Greg frowned. "What's your plan?"
A sharp gleam flashed in Orey's eyes: "I've sent forces to cut off the black wizards' retreat. If we apply pressure from the front, we can likely wipe out these black wizard apprentices."
"Bold plan." Greg was taken aback by Orey's strategy but quickly agreed after a moment's thought.
"Frostwind Academy will fully cooperate, but..." Greg hesitated, glancing at the white wizard apprentices in the camp.
These apprentices, having just survived a harrowing battle, were likely to panic if the black wizards attempted a breakout.
"Don't worry." Orey assured him with a confident smile. "Frostwind and Aurora Academies just need to bolster our numbers. In actual combat, you only need to prevent scattered black wizard apprentices from escaping."
"...Alright."
Greg agreed without hesitation and started organizing his apprentices.
Within about twenty minutes, the apprentices from Frostwind and Aurora Academies were organized.
The night raid had taken a heavy toll on both sides, with over eight hundred apprentices lost, more than half of the forces they had brought.
With grim expressions, Greg and the fiery-eyed Menasi joined Orey, finally understanding the harsh reality faced by Keeper Academy.
War was brutally unforgiving.
"Now that you're organized, let's begin." Orey pointed into the dense forest, a confident smile playing on his lips.
"This battle will be the final war!"
...
On the other side of the forest, Richard was leading two hundred black wizard apprentices toward the battlefield.
Along the way, he continuously switched perspectives to assess the battle's progress. Seeing that both Void and Annihilation were starting to retreat, he immediately ordered Foggy to return.
He needed to locate the two advancing white wizard corps from Keeper Academy.
"Boss, up ahead is where we set the trap zone." A black wizard apprentice reported to Richard.
Richard nodded. "Good, leave a few alchemy apprentices here to stand guard. Once we make contact, we'll rely on these magical traps to buy time."
Foggy's flight speed was swift, and from its high vantage point, it had a broad field of view. Within minutes, it had spotted one of the white wizard corps.
The bad news was that this corps was about to engage Void Academy.
"Damn it." Richard cursed, urging the apprentices to hurry to the battlefield.
If they were surrounded on three sides, Void and Annihilation Academies would suffer a severe blow.
Boom!
The deafening explosion echoed through the forest, stopping the fleeing black wizards in their tracks as they searched for the source.
"A white wizard corps?" Anderson felt a chill run down his spine as he spotted the corps a few hundred meters away.
Were they surrounded?
He quickly realized that the white wizard corps arriving at the camp was only a small contingent, far from Keeper Academy's full force.
"We must break through quickly!"
Anderson made a decisive call, leading the Void Academy apprentices in a charge.
"Charging head-on?" Bartolas, commanding the white wizard corps, sneered, directing his apprentices to unleash a carpet of spells.
Charge all you want, if you don't mind casualties!
Spells rained down in arcs around the black apprentices, forcing them to retreat.
"Damn it, head this way!" Anderson cursed, leading the apprentices to the right.
Meanwhile, Annihilation Academy faced similar resistance from the white wizard corps.
"Damn it, are we surrounded?"
Aldo's soul fire flickered wildly, reflecting his agitation.
"Head to the center." Aldo decided, leading his apprentices left to regroup with Void Academy.
With obstacles ahead and pursuers behind, uniting with Void Academy was their best chance to leverage their top apprentices' power for a breakout.
Behind them, Orey's white wizard corps, along with Frostwind and Aurora Academies, steadily pursued the black wizards.
Explosions from the front indicated the white wizard corps had engaged the black wizards. If the two academies weren't foolish, they'd converge toward the center.
Of course, there's also a chance they might scatter, but that's unlikely. Once separated, senior apprentices are easily identified and targeted.
"Prepare to engage!" Orey commanded.
The Keeper Academy apprentices gripped their staves tightly. War had tempered them, instilling some qualities of a true white wizard corps.
At least they wouldn't scatter at the sight of a few spells or casualties.
On either side, Frostwind and Aurora Academy apprentices also readied themselves.
Having survived a chaotic battle, these apprentices had learned a few things, making them passable soldiers.
When Void and Annihilation Academies merged, it confirmed their encirclement.
Orey's white wizard corps was nearly within casting range, and the apprentices' magical energies stirred a gentle breeze in the forest.
"We'll have to force our way out." Anderson frowned, making a swift decision.
Opposite him, Aldo reached the same conclusion.
Although dispersing the apprentices might allow more to escape, it offered no benefit to senior apprentices.
While winning the war was important, their own survival was paramount.
"Prepare to break through! Use every trick you have!"
Anderson relayed the order, pulling a potion from his magic pouch. The potion was a vivid red, resembling some creature's blood. After drinking it, Anderson's aura became eerily potent.
"High-level vampire blood, a good find." Aldo remarked, pulling out a scroll.
The scroll unfurled, and a mysterious power enveloped Aldo.
Anderson, his eyes blood-red and veins bulging, noticed the scroll and exclaimed,
"A Luck Scroll! How did you get that?"
Aldo's soul fire flickered. "Acquired it during an adventure."
Luck Scrolls, a lost curse magic knowledge, temporarily enhanced the user's luck, at the cost of future misfortune.
But for someone facing death, living an extra second was a blessing. What was misfortune compared to that?
"Prepare to break through!"
The two lead apprentices issued their orders, charging forward.
With the vampire blood coursing through him, Anderson's physique, recovery, and reflexes were greatly enhanced.
His physical prowess now matched an extreme apprentice, more than sufficient for a breakout.
Beside him, Aldo moved with ease, slipping through gaps in the spells without a scratch, like a flower petal unruffled by the storm.
Behind them, black wizard apprentices braced against the white wizard corps' spell barrage, pushing forward. Many were incinerated or electrocuted by the magical onslaught.
"Stop them!"
The two white wizard corps leaders commanded their forces, forming an impenetrable wall against the black apprentices.
"Stop my ass!"
A roar echoed from the forest behind the white wizards. A colossal black giant, like a demonic god, charged toward the corps, wielding a black-flamed greatsword.
Seeing this, Anderson recognized the giant immediately.
Anderson shouted, "Black Tower's reinforcements are here! Follow me and attack the white wizard corps!"
The white corps shifted focus, attempting to eliminate the black giant with spells.
"Six o'clock direction, distance 50, all lightning barrage ready!"
"Fire!"
In an instant, hundreds of lightning bolts flashed from the corps' staves, engulfing Richard's silhouette in purple thunder.
Yet the next moment, the black giant reached the white wizard corps.
"Still alive!?" The corps' leader was stunned.
Surviving a barrage of hundreds of spells was something only a wizard could achieve.
"Die!"
The black giant roared, muscles bulging as the greatsword cleaved through the defenders, spraying blood.
The white apprentices were paralyzed with fear.
What kind of monster was this, surviving an onslaught and still fighting?
But there was no time to ponder, as a barrage of elemental spells flew toward them.
Boom!
The white apprentices scattered, even the senior ones fleeing in panic.
It was monstrous.
With a gap torn in the encirclement, the black apprentices seized the opportunity to escape.
Richard planted his sword in the ground, black smoke rising from his body. His flesh split open, ejecting several drained magic stones.
He wasn't as invincible as the white apprentices thought.
Thanks to his adaptive physique, Richard had resistance to fire, lightning, and ice spells below fifty power levels.
But reality wasn't a game, and resistance had its limits.
One punch might be fine, but a hundred punches would cause problems.
Richard felt his entire body burning with pain, his bloodline draining ten magic stones to heal.
"Not a bad trade-off. At least I scared them."
Regaining his composure, Richard glanced at the pursuing white wizard corps.
At that moment, Orey also looked Richard's way.
Their eyes met, sensing a mutual recognition.
That person was his greatest adversary in this war!
Richard retrieved his sword, waved at Orey, then vanished into the forest.
Orey ordered a continued pursuit, but the white wizard corps, needing to maintain formation, couldn't match the black apprentices' speed.
Moreover, magical traps slowed their pursuit.
Watching the black apprentices fade into the forest, Orey punched a nearby tree in frustration.
"Damn it! So close!"
The two white wizard corps leaders joined Orey.
"Dennis, why did you retreat? Do you realize your retreat cost us our victory tonight?" Orey shouted at one leader.
Dennis bowed his head, haunted by the black giant's charge through their ranks.
He admitted he had no will to resist such a monster.
A creature that could withstand hundreds of spells—how could it appear on an apprentice battlefield?
"We... encountered a monster." Dennis said bitterly. "Before we fled, that monster endured nearly a hundred lightning strikes.
Yet it still lived... and broke our formation!"
Dennis sighed. "Against such an enemy, I had no will to resist. Commander, punish me as you see fit."
Orey exhaled.
"You will be punished. But first, regroup your corps."
Dennis' explanation was valid. Even Orey, in Dennis' position, could only delay the retreat.
A monster that could charge through spell barrages was beyond what Keeper Academy apprentices could handle.
But valid reasons didn't excuse punishment.
Dennis wouldn't hold a command position in this war again.
Post-battle, the three academies tallied their losses.
Keeper Academy lost over thirty apprentices in the encirclement. The other two, being auxiliary, lost over ten, but counting night raid casualties, they had lost over half their forces.
The outcome was fruitful; they killed about 150 black wizard apprentices in the encirclement, and 40 during the night raid.
Combined, the black wizards lost a fifth of their forces.
After the battle, Aurora and Frostwind Academies' apprentices returned to their respective resource points. This battle, though costly, marked a growth in their ranks.
Mixing war-hardened veterans with new recruits would effectively enhance the latter's combat capabilities.
Meanwhile, outside the secret realm, the deans of the six academies watched silently.
