Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Apprentice War (Part 12)

"Isn't the war progressing a bit too quickly, Frostwind?" The Great Wizard of Black Tower observed the glass dome in front of him, which displayed the secret realm where Richard and the others were. He could see every move the apprentices made with perfect clarity. Opposite him sat the Great Wizard of Frostwind, an ice being composed entirely of a pale blue ice.

"It is indeed a bit fast," Frostwind exhaled a breath of cold air. "It's only the first day, and all three battlefields have turned into a chaotic mess."

"But the results seem promising," commented the Great Wizard of Aurora, a dazzling light cloaked in a shimmering cape transmitting his mental waves.

"Indeed, it's quite promising. Our side has already started developing the capability for corps-style warfare," added the Great Wizard of Keeper, a middle-aged man cloaked in mystery with his eyes and mouth stitched, presenting a rather intimidating appearance.

"We need to adjust the rules; otherwise, there won't be any fight left for our side," suggested a profound energy cloaked in a wizard's robe. "Once the white wizard corps fully adapts, the black wizards won't stand a chance."

Even the Great Wizards made some initial mistakes in this first apprentice war.

They had originally designed the war to last about a year, with plans for reconnaissance, advances, and engagements. However, it was clear now that the apprentices were bypassing those phases altogether.

At this pace, the war could conclude in just a few more days.

They had been too distant from the apprentices, forgetting how limited their means were.

"No need to rush, Void," another Great Wizard, who appeared human like the Great Wizard of Black Tower, interjected. "Remember, the number of apprentices is also a victory condition."

"Yet it still puts us at a disadvantage," the Great Wizard of Black Tower replied. "According to planar battlefield simulations, black wizards represent native strongmen, and their numbers should exceed those of the white wizards, who should rely on corps advantages to gradually defeat them.

But it's the opposite now. When have we ever encountered a war where wizards outnumbered natives during planar conquest?"

"Speak plainly, Black Tower," Frostwind said calmly.

The Great Wizard of Black Tower chuckled darkly:

"Frostwind, it seems like you guys are benefiting more this time. Our little ones are just sharpening stones for you. Shouldn't you offer something in return?"

"Black Tower, you're always looking for an edge," Frostwind sighed. "How about this: if the black wizards win even a single engagement, we'll consider it a victory for you."

He then glanced at the Great Wizards of Void and Annihilation.

"Agreed."

"Agreed."

Both Great Wizards concurred with the rule adjustment.

"Aurora, Keeper, what about you two?" The Great Wizard of Black Tower looked at the remaining Great Wizards from the white wizard faction.

After exchanging mental messages, they also agreed to the rule changes.

The Great Wizard of Black Tower clapped his hands, and a scroll with an aura of mystery appeared out of thin air. With a swipe of his finger, its contents changed instantly.

"The contract is amended. Let's continue watching."

...

Within the public resource point, the black wizard apprentices also tallied their losses. During the night raid, Void Academy suffered more, losing about 120 apprentices. Annihilation Academy, thanks to Aldo's undead minions, had fewer casualties.

After compiling the results, the leaders of the three academies gathered in the meeting room to discuss their next steps.

"Gentlemen, I believe we need to adjust our strategy," Richard said, tapping his fingers rhythmically on the table.

Beside him, Anderson from Void Academy and Aldo from Annihilation Academy remained silent.

"How did you know we were surrounded?" Aldo suddenly asked. "Your timing was impeccable—even if I'd sent someone for help, they couldn't have arrived in time."

"How did I know?"

Richard smiled and snapped his fingers. Foggy flew in through the window, landing comfortably on his shoulder.

"Didn't it occur to you to use a magical pet?"

Anderson and Aldo were taken aback, a chill running down their spines.

They hadn't considered magical pets.

And judging by Richard's demeanor, this pet had likely been observing them for some time, possibly even during their night raid.

"A magical pet..." Anderson paused. "That's indeed a blind spot."

The secret realm wasn't devoid of magical beasts; a crow perched on a branch rarely drew attention.

"The white wizard apprentices probably haven't noticed either, which is advantageous for us," Aldo said gravely.

"Being discovered is only a matter of time," Richard shook his head. "White wizard academies probably teach magical reconnaissance. They'll soon realize something is watching them."

"What did you mean by changing strategy earlier?" Anderson asked suddenly.

"The white wizard apprentices are growing too quickly. If we want to win, we must leverage our strengths," Richard's eyes gleamed with insight. "We should abandon the idea of capturing resource points for victory. Instead, we should focus on reducing the number of white wizard apprentices as much as possible.

Reducing their numbers to less than half is also a path to victory."

"We're aware of that," Aldo countered. "But trading casualties with white wizard corps seems disadvantageous to us."

Richard chuckled confidently. "Who said we need to confront them head-on?"

"Hmm?"

Anderson and Aldo exchanged glances, puzzled by Richard's intentions.

"Gentlemen, we're not wizards. We're stronger than ordinary people, but we still need food and water," Richard explained leisurely. "White wizard apprentices can solve their water needs with magical arrays, but they can't conjure food from thin air.

Given their naïveté, they probably didn't bring much in the way of rations.

So they'll have to venture out to gather food."

Richard left the rest unsaid, but Anderson and Aldo understood his implication.

When the white wizard apprentices went out to gather food, the black wizards could strike.

But Anderson identified a potential problem.

"What if they don't delay? What if they concentrate their apprentices and attack our resource points quickly?"

"They'll delay," Richard shook his head. "Some haven't even seen battle yet. If they attack hastily and retreat, won't we win?"

"Moreover," Richard took out a magic stone, "they need to replenish their magic stones too, don't they?"

Due to the large number of white wizard apprentices, only a few top-tier ones had as many magic stones as black wizard apprentices.

This meant that after a day and night of intense fighting, many white wizards had depleted their reserves.

"That makes sense. What's your plan?" Anderson looked at Richard.

Although they were both apprentice leaders, Richard always seemed to possess an unfathomable depth.

This feeling didn't stem from strength but from a sense of intellectual superiority.

"Simple," Richard clapped his hands. "We'll hold two resource points and let the white wizards take the others.

Then we'll send elite squads to harass white apprentices outside their resource points, killing as many as possible."

The two leaders pondered for a moment, realizing this was indeed a sound strategy.

Elite apprentices could quickly end battles and swiftly retreat.

"I agree."

"I agree too."

Richard stood. "Since we're all in agreement, let's get started."

...

As Richard predicted, after their apprentices returned, Frostwind and Aurora Academies made no significant moves. Keeper Academy, due to depleted magic stones, also held their ground, sending only small squads outside the resource points for food hunting.

Apprentices weren't full-fledged wizards yet; they couldn't sustain themselves solely on magic.

Food and water were still essential for survival.

While white wizard squads hunted for food, the black wizards weren't idle.

The three black wizard academies each formed ten elite squads of five, covering all five factions to handle various situations. These squads were dispatched around white wizard resource points to hunt any apprentices who ventured out.

Meanwhile, the remaining black wizards began fortifying their positions.

Due to heavy losses, Void and Annihilation Academies decided to jointly defend one resource point, while Black Tower Academy held another on its own.

Thus, the black and white sides entered a brief stalemate.

...

"Run, Alyssa!" a white apprentice shouted, lunging at the black wizards attacking them. Mid-leap, he transformed into a muscular beastman covered in fur.

He was clearly an alchemical bloodline apprentice.

Opposite him, five black wizards coordinated seamlessly, maintaining distance as three elemental spells struck him. Meanwhile, the other two targeted the fleeing white apprentice, ensnaring them in black chains that erupted from the ground. A swift elemental spell finished the job.

After the kill, the black wizards meticulously looted the bodies and set a magical trap beneath them.

"All done," the trap-setting apprentice murmured.

With that, the five black wizards melted into the forest.

Shortly after, a group of white apprentices arrived.

"Damn it, those bastards escaped again!" their leader cursed, echoed by the angered apprentices behind him.

This was the fifth black wizard ambush this month.

"Captain, we found no trace," a white apprentice reported.

"Damn it, collect the bodies and bring them back."

As they moved the bodies, the black wizards' trap triggered, blasting a nearby apprentice to pieces with explosive fire elements.

"Elvin!" The captain's eyes widened in shock, unleashing spells wildly into the forest.

But the black wizard squad was long gone, leaving him to vent his frustration in vain.

...

"The fifth black wizard ambush." Bartolas handed a report to Orey. "This time, they left a trap on the bodies, killing one of our search party."

"Understood." Orey glanced at the report, rubbing his temples in frustration.

"Is this what war is?" Bartolas sat beside Orey, his emotions in turmoil.

The black apprentices' willingness to set traps on their own kind's corpses for victory was hard for Bartolas to accept.

War should have some boundaries.

"Yes, this is war," Orey replied casually. "War's purpose is victory, and for that, we must be ruthless."

"Though that's true, it's still hard to swallow," Bartolas sighed, as if trying to expel his inner turmoil.

"We're all apprentices, all human. Why stoop so low?"

"Low?" Orey chuckled. "Bartolas, you're too naive.

What do you think this war is about? What are we simulating?

This war simulates the planar battlefield, where alien monsters' tactics are a hundred times more underhanded! A hundred times more brutal! They'll slaughter wizards without remorse, using our bodies as appetizers.

If you can't handle this, how will you cope on the planar battlefield? Request a rear assignment and be a lifelong logistician?"

As a scion of a wizarding family, Orey had heard tales of the planar war's brutality from his elders.

On those bloody battlefields, even wizards selected through rigorous screening fell like soldiers. Even the mightiest Great Wizards could perish.

The alien monsters' methods were countless; death could be a luxury for captured wizards.

This was merely setting traps with corpses. What's next?

Bartolas was speechless, shifting the topic to solutions.

"We can't keep this up. We need a way to handle these black wizards."

"A solution..." Orey pondered. "I propose gathering everyone who goes out for food, forming small corps instead of scattering."

Bartolas frowned. "That would reduce efficiency, and food might run short."

"Short?" Orey laughed coldly. "It's a special time; we need special measures.

Collect all food in the camp, ration it daily. As long as no one starves, it's enough.

In special times, everyone must endure."

"And the captains?" Bartolas asked.

"Captains?" Orey smiled. "Even I'm rationed. Are captains higher than me?"
