Chapter 98: Chapter 98: The Golden Dawn Society

Chapter 98: The Golden Dawn Society

"The Source of the Wizarding World?" Richard repeated, puzzled. "Does advancing to a wizard require the power of the world's source?"

Jolord explained slowly, "Any creature in any world, when advancing to a primary creature, needs the help or recognition of the world's source.

Only when recognized by the world's source is the creature officially considered as stepping into the realm of primary creatures."

"What if it's not recognized?" Richard asked curiously.

"Then you'll be regarded as an intruder by the world, much like wizards invading other planes, targeted by all the world's creatures," Jolord said calmly.

"That's terrible," Richard gasped.

Being targeted by the entire world's creatures sounded terrifying indeed.

"In the past, wizards didn't need to go to the Tower of Truth to advance," Jolord said with a hint of nostalgia. "When my teacher advanced, the source of the wizarding world wasn't as closed as it is now. Some exceptionally gifted wizards could still communicate with the world's source to complete the advancement ceremony.

According to him, theoretically, any extreme apprentice in the wizarding world could communicate with the world's source.

But unfortunately, we weren't born in the right time. As the world's source got damaged and the magic tides receded, it became increasingly difficult for wizard apprentices to communicate with the world's source, leading to the current situation where advancing to wizardry requires purchasing a wizard qualification from the Tower of Truth."

"Wizard qualification..." Richard thought of the scroll given to him by the Great Wizard of the Black Tower.

"Do you know how much your wizard scroll would sell for at the Tower of Truth?" Jolord suddenly asked.

"How much?" Richard swallowed, thinking it must be expensive.

"A thousand magic essences, equivalent to a million magic stones."

"A million magic stones! That's so expensive!" Richard was shocked by the figure.

"Did you think gaining access to the world's source would be cheap?" Jolord snorted. "That's the world's source, the most core thing of a world.

You should be grateful you can access it for a million magic stones."

Though Jolord's words made sense, Richard still felt the price was steep.

To earn a million magic stones, he'd have to sell at least 250,000 bottles of his focus potion.

"That wizard qualification is really valuable," Richard muttered.

"Valuable or not, you can't sell it. Come, let's visit an old friend."

With that, Jolord took out his staff from his magic pouch, and with a gentle wave, Richard felt a lightness in his body as a soft force lifted him, forming a thin barrier around him.

Then... Richard experienced what true speed meant.

"Teacher, isn't this a bit too fast?"

Watching the ever-changing scenery pass by, Richard felt a bit alarmed.

"Fast? Hahaha..."

Jolord laughed heartily, increasing the speed even more.

"This is nothing!"

In just a minute or two, Richard found himself at the top of a wizard tower near the city center, having traveled over thirty kilometers from the airship port on the city's outskirts.

Jolord landed at the top of the wizard tower, took out a crystal ball, and spoke into it.

"Gerald, open the door."

A rough voice responded from the crystal ball.

"Jolord? What brings you here, old buddy?"

With that, the top of the wizard tower opened up, and Jolord guided Richard inside, navigating the tower with ease.

As they walked, Jolord introduced the tower's owner to Richard.

"Gerald is an old friend and a wizard from the alchemy school, specializing in bloodlines. If you encounter any issues with bloodlines in the future, you can get some guidance from him for a few magic stones."

Eventually, they reached a room with a massive archway.

Richard noticed that every door he'd seen since entering the tower was unusually large, as if the tower's owner were a giant.

Jolord knocked on the door, and a deep, rough voice answered from within.

"Jolord, come in."

Upon opening the door, Richard felt like he had stepped into a giant's room. Everything inside, from chairs and tables to cups and books, was several times larger than normal.

At the center of it all, a giant at least three meters tall was reading a book, wearing glasses, and covered in dense hair except for his face.

Seeing Jolord, the giant closed his book and stood.

Standing, he loomed like a wall before Richard.

"Jolord, it's been fifty years, hasn't it?" The giant spread his arms.

Hovering, Jolord embraced the giant in mid-air.

"Good memory. We haven't met since the last gathering, Gerald."

After the embrace, the giant Gerald glanced at Richard.

"Is this your student? Seems like he's pursuing bloodline alchemy."

"Yes, Richard has done some research in bloodline alchemy."

Jolord pulled Richard beside him.

"This is Master Gerald, an acquaintance of mine for two thousand years."

Richard politely bowed to Gerald, "Master Gerald."

Gerald patted Richard, his strength reminiscent of a primal beast, causing Richard to stumble.

"Not bad, good physique," Gerald nodded approvingly, then turned to Jolord, "Why'd you bring him here? Changing the bloodline seed formula?"

"Why am I here?" Jolord tapped the ground with his staff. "Gerald, you said we haven't met in fifty years. Why do you think I'm here?"

"Oh, right. The society gathering's due," Gerald realized. "So this kid's here to advance to wizardry? But isn't this year not a graduation year for Black Tower Wizard Academy?"

"He's here for the wizard advancement," Jolord found a chair and sat. "Recently, our dean and several great wizards held a competition, with the grand prize being the qualification to advance.

This student of mine managed to win it."

"An apprentice war?" Gerald's interest piqued. "Your academy participated in that? How effective is it—can it be promoted?"

Jolord shook his head, "Hard to say. I hear the dean and others are revising the rules. This year's trial met its goals, but there were unexpected events."

"Unexpected events? What could the great wizards have overlooked?" Gerald asked, curious.

"Overlooked?" Jolord glanced at Richard. "A little one made a strategic-level magic device, forcing the great wizards to halt the competition."

"A strategic-level magic device!?" Gerald's voice rose two octaves, "Could an apprentice create that? What would old Merlin say? He spent over a thousand years without designing a strategic-level magic device."

"What can I say? The great wizards deemed it strategic," Jolord boasted.

"Wait, judging by your look, old buddy," Gerald's face showed suspicion, then he turned to Richard.

"Wasn't it your student who made that?"

"What do you think?" Jolord's smile brimmed with pride.

For these aged wizards, nothing was more entertaining than boasting about their students.

Gerald approached Richard, eyes gleaming, inspecting him closely.

"Kid, you're pursuing bloodline alchemy. Why not join me? Jolord's synthetic beasts will only hold you back."

Gerald offered a "friendly" smile.

"Get lost," Jolord waved his staff, sending a ball of flame at Gerald, singing some of his hair.

"He's my student; stop trying to poach him."

"So what if he's your student? What's the saying—'a good bird chooses the right tree to perch on'? You're wasting his potential..."

Watching the wizards bicker, Richard's mouth twitched slightly.

They're thousands of years old, yet behave like they're only a few decades old.

After some banter, Jolord finally got to the point.

"Gerald, I want my student to join the society."

"Join the society?" Gerald raised an eyebrow. "Joining's fine. If he can create a strategic-level device as an apprentice, his intellect's proven. Plus, being your student, you can easily get five veteran members to vouch for him.

But... he's not a wizard yet; you know the risks of advancement."

"Society?" Richard asked curiously.

"Societies are groups among wizards, meant for sharing news, exchanging research, and trading items," Jolord explained. "The one I'm part of is called the Golden Dawn Society, and all its members are wizards from the alchemy school."

After explaining, Jolord looked at Gerald.

"Better to prepare beforehand than scramble afterward. If any of you suddenly join the planar wars, I'd have to wait centuries."

"Alright, I agree."

Gerald clicked his tongue, pulled a seal from his large magic pouch, while Jolord produced a scroll.

The scroll currently bore one seal, but after Gerald stamped it, the count became two.

"Done with the stamping, let's head to the Tower of Truth," Jolord signaled Richard, then stood to leave the room.

"So soon? Not staying for a meal?" Gerald also stood, attempting to stop Jolord.

But Jolord, moving nimbly, grabbed Richard and flew out.

"No, no. Any later and we'll miss the airship."

Seeing Jolord's sudden change in expression, Richard felt puzzled.

"Teacher, why are we in such a hurry?"

"Hurry?" Jolord gave Richard a wry smile, "If we weren't, we'd end up eating here. Do you really want to try rare cooked Green-patterned Snake with Dark Blue Worm sauce?"

Ahead, the corridor doors suddenly closed, blocking their path to the rooftop.

"Jolord, why are you running? This time, I guarantee you'll love what I made."

Half an hour later, the two, pale-faced, boarded the airship.

From a practical standpoint, if they could digest that meal, it might provide Richard with nearly five points of physique.

But practicality was its only merit.

"Teacher, next time, we need to leave faster."
