Chapter 3: The Operation
Opal lay on a cold table, a mask came down over her nose and mouth. She started counting by requesting backward. The anesthesia then kicked in. She fell into a deep sleep where only heaven's dreams come from.
Her family is in the waiting room for her surgery outcome. Drinking kaffi offered by the hospital.
Chloe was right along with them, she had known them since elementary school. They'd been best friends. To those who have stood by me with love and devotion. Thank you. Thoughts from Opal, expressed before going under for surgery.
Shale her mother brought a quilt for us to sew and quilt. Her Schwester Naomi there just the two girls. Because her mother had endometriosis, she had a full hysterectomy. Opals Fater William there reading a book about making billfolds. He sold leather goods and apparel.
The waiting room became busy, so we decided to move over by the window overlooking the interstate lots of vehicles drove at high speeds commuting from one end of town to another side.
Chloe sat observing, she'd never seen close up before. It was amazing to look out over yet uninvolved. Because you will never know the people driving. Inside she felt glad to be a Mennonite living on a farm.
What seemed forever had finally ended her surgery. The Doctor came out in his scrubs, " Opal is doing well, it was a clean surgery she is in recovery. And when she feels up to walking out of the hospital can leave today. I'm having her see the regular doctor for checkups. Thank you nice to meet the family of my Patient. He left heading to the back through two doors.
Within a few more hours Opal came out being pushed in a wheelchair by a hospital Nurse. Smiling Opal was, looking gut, She would return home and heal there.
The day after her surgery, Mater persisted until she had Opal at the kitchen table relaxing.
Chloe had gone home and promised to be back later.
William Ammand, in the barn, making leather harnesses, working on saddles and wallets, so men's billfolds, purses. He built buggies by order and just recently put a catalog out.
His hired hand Arlo, planted beans in his fields and raised Sheep Dogs and German Shepherds. They also crafted leather goods. Naomi Ammand made and designed ladies' leather apparel.
Opal designed Mennonite clothes for women only. Her shop in town called " Opals
Modest clothing." Her Mater helped run the store. To be certain things that go together will stay together. Including Opal's business, it will be hers to stay. Mater's thoughts were to keep her going and not be feeling down over the hysterectomy. For most of the owners, she had it to take care of forever.
Naomi came to join them, pouring herself a steamy mug of kaffi adding cream and sugar. Sipped it holding it close to her chest using both hands. She seated herself and then, where she always sits, reached for a napkin. Mater then passed a basket with a pretty towel in it and donuts in it. Flavors of plain, double chocolate-filled long johns. She chose the long John, yeast dough, thick white icing, cream filled. Opal ate a double chocolate donut and sipped kaffi.
Mater chose oatmeal and toast with butter and jelly, Instead of kaffi, and milk. After lunch, they would make beef jerky, always a home recipe. Before it had run out of stock in the crock they stored it in.
Recipe for Beef Jerky
Use eye of round, beef steak, top round, London broil. These meats work very well for your jerky texture. You use a favorite family flavor.
Set meat cut in the freezer for a few minutes, then cut it into slices.
3 pounds of beef cut against the grain
3/4 cup soy sauce
1 cup Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoons onion powder
1 tablespoon chili flakes
1 tablespoon liquid smoke optional
2 teaspoons black pepper
Mix in a large mixing bowl
Marinade in a covered container
For 6 to 36
Remove from container
Pat dry
Lay by strips in a dehydrator 8to 12 hours
. The afternoon was a busy one, Opal was glad to be home. Her old standby Herby a white miniature collie jumped up into her arms and kissed her face as he wagged his tail.
Meanwhile, a knock on the door of Amos Troyer," May I speak with Opal? Is she home yet? Mater told him to come right on inside. Then showed him to the kitchen. Opal and he hugged.
Opal: " Am I ever so glad to see you, how are you, Amos?
Amos: "I'm gut seeing you looking so pretty. I brought a gift, especially for you, here you go. Setting it on the Kitchen table.
She opened a round cylinder box, of tissue paper, underneath a beautiful ink pen set. And handkerchief embroidered with bluebells. " Oh my, how lovely, Danke so much Amos I love them. "
Amos: " Welcome, anything for a gal as waunderbra as you are Opal. He pulled a chair in and sat right by her. Mater handed her a card set with matching stationary. They wrote on it together.
Chloe came then, she brought a big bouquet of violets, in a clear glass vase. She sat in the center of the table. Then walked around the couple to hug Opal. " Hi, Amos it's nice seeing your smile next to Opal."
Mater joined them sitting along with the kinner. She had empty glasses and a pitcher of sweet tea, pouring everyone a glass to drink. Since they asked them to stay and eat lunch. She served minced ham salad sandwiches and homemade potato chips and handed out napkins. They all had a great time.
