Chapter 4 - The First Bout of Nausea
The Gu family’s heir?
The way that was said—it sounded like Mr. Gu’s family must be incredibly wealthy.
Generally, rich families didn’t use terms like “heir” to refer to their children. At least, the Shen family certainly didn’t.
Before Su Shu could respond, Gu Beiting merely uttered a quiet “Uh.”
“Brother! My dear brother…” Gu Shijun stomped his feet in shock, grabbing Gu Beiting by the arm and pulling him aside.
Gu Beiting knew exactly what his brother wanted to say, so he cut him off with a cold command, “You’ll perform the surgery yourself.”
“No way!” Gu Shijun responded, his tone serious. “Specializations exist for a reason! Even though I’m the director, I can’t cross departments and perform surgeries outside my expertise! Besides—”
Gu Shijun, pacing frantically, added with a worried tone, “You know how eager Grandpa is for us brothers to give him a great-grandchild. If he finds out there’s already an heir, do you think he’ll let it go?”
“Then make sure he doesn’t find out,” Gu Beiting said, his voice unwavering, before returning to Su Shu’s side.
Gu Shijun spun around in frustration, pacing in circles, but had no choice but to obediently escort Su Shu for her blood tests.
Once all the tests were completed, Su Shu was brought to a private hospital room.
She didn’t dare call anyone, so she simply sent a WeChat message to her aunt, explaining that she wouldn’t be home tonight and was staying at a friend’s house.
Gu Beiting stood by the door, staring at the side of her face when she typed.
The image of that night flashed in his mind again—her arms draped around his neck, asking for water in a soft, pleading voice.
He shook his head, trying to banish the inappropriate memories from his mind.
Just then, Gu Shijun arrived with the test results in hand, and Gu Beiting met him halfway.
The two brothers went into an empty room, where Gu Shijun pointed at a small shadow on the B-ultrasound sheet and said, “This here is the gestational sac. It’s currently at five weeks.”
Gu Beiting reached out and gently traced the small shadow with his fingertip.
“Once the blood HCG and ECG results come in, she can start the medication for a medical abortion tomorrow morning,” Gu Shijun continued, “If the medication doesn’t work completely within three days, she’ll need a dilation and curettage procedure.”
Gu Beiting withdrew his gaze from the scan, his emotions in turmoil.
After a long pause.
His voice finally broke the silence. “If she needs the procedure, you will personally oversee it in the operating room.”
“That’s against the rules! We have strict protocols in this hospital,” Gu Shijun flatly refused.
After all, who knew if this young woman might become his sister-in-law one day?
And who in their right mind would be in the operating room, watching over their future sister-in-law during such a procedure?
It would be inappropriate, to say the least!
Still holding his phone, Gu Beiting snapped a picture of the B-ultrasound report and handed it back to his brother.
“Take good care of her,” he said as he turned to leave.
Frustrated, Gu Shijun stomped his feet, “Don’t just walk away! This is too big of a deal for me to handle alone! You need to stay and watch over your own woman!”
Despite leaving the hospital, Gu Beiting wasn’t really abandoning Su Shu.
Forty minutes later, he returned, carrying a container of packaged chicken soup.
Su Shu blinked in surprise. “Mr. Gu, why are you back?”
“You haven’t eaten dinner yet, have you?” Gu Beiting replied, opening the bag and setting out the chicken soup and rice.
The rich aroma of the soup wafted through the air.
But instead of igniting Su Shu’s appetite, it triggered an overwhelming wave of nausea.
For the first time, she dry-heaved.
She bolted for the restroom, and Gu Beiting, alarmed, quickly set down the soup and followed her.
After vomiting, Su Shu turned around to find him standing behind her, holding out a cup of water.
“Rinse your mouth,” he said, offering the cup.
Su Shu took it, murmured a quiet “Thank you,” and rinsed her mouth.
When she returned to the bedside, the smell of the chicken soup made her feel queasy again.
Without a word, Gu Beiting swiftly picked up the soup and left the room.
When he came back, Su Shu was already feeling better.
“Mr. Gu, I’m so sorry. You brought me this soup out of kindness, and I…”
“There’s no need to apologize,” Gu Beiting interrupted, his brow slightly furrowed. “Have you been feeling like this the whole time?”
“This is the first time,” Su Shu replied. “Tomorrow morning I’ll start taking the medication, and then I won’t be sick anymore.”
Hearing her say this, Gu Beiting’s frown deepened.
He nodded once. “Rest for a while. I’ll go see if the cafeteria has anything lighter for you to eat.”
“There’s no need! I—”
Before she could finish, Gu Beiting had already walked out the door.
Su Shu sat on the hospital bed, lost in thought.
She gently placed her hand on her still-flat stomach, a wave of sadness slowly spreading through her chest.
Mr. Gu seemed like a genuinely kind man.
It was just a pity that this baby wouldn’t have the chance to stay.
“Knock, knock, knock!”
The door opened, and Su Shu looked up to see Gu Shijun entering the room.
“Hello, Dr. Gu!”
Gu Shijun walked over and sat down on the couch.
He had waited until his elder brother left before coming in, intending to persuade Su Shu.
