In the riverside workshop, Singed's laboratory was spacious and filled with the bubbling sounds of alchemical solutions, accompanied by Vander's heavy breathing.
He sounded like a large bellows, exhaling hot air.
As Singed entered the lab with Link and Janna, Janna immediately noticed Vander hanging in mid-air. Her eyelids flickered as the blue bird flew over to Vander's side, leaning close to his face to observe this monstrous figure that resembled no human.
With a look of pity in her eyes, Janna exhaled a gentle breeze.
"Poor child—"
The gentle wind circled around Vander, causing his face to twitch, but his heavy breathing became noticeably easier.
Seeing this, Link exchanged a glance with Singed, who nodded slightly in understanding.
It seemed that human experimentation could no longer continue; otherwise, it would provoke the displeasure or even punishment of this goddess.
"Doctor, where's the potion for healing the tree?"
Link raised his voice, prompting Singed to quickly retrieve the freshly prepared potion and hand it to Link.
"This is the healing potion formulated based on the leaf sample you brought—"
Link examined the potion in his hand under the overhead light.
The liquid was a clear blue-purple, pristine and free of impurities, resembling liquid gemstones contained within a test tube.
"Can you explain the principle behind it?" Link shook the test tube while Singed replied: "The sample you provided showed adverse reactions not merely due to environmental erosion but because the living organism could not withstand external disturbances, leading to internal afflictions."
"To be honest, I've seen similar signs of erosion before." Singed picked up a nearby leaf specimen. "The structure resulting from this erosion is identical to what I've encountered previously."
Link raised an eyebrow, recalling the sample Victor had shown him in the first storyline.
"Nature's endowment causes us to reject mutations," Singed placed the leaf specimen back down. "Fortunately, I have the power to alter this nature—more so than before!"
"So, this potion's principle is to enable that tree to evolve despite the erosion?" Link asked in surprise. Singed nodded. "You could say that. More accurately, it enhances that tree's adaptability to its environment."
"Every living organism will overcome unfavorable conditions and evolve accordingly."
"The potion merely accelerates that process."
"I see." Link looked enlightened before asking again: "Is one vial enough?"
"Enough; just an injection into the roots will suffice." Singed produced a specially designed syringe. "Use this."
"Okay." Link stored both the potion and syringe into his attachment.
Noticing Link's ability to store items in thin air, Singed expressed surprise.
Link gestured toward Janna with his chin. Singed immediately understood—it was a blessing from a deity.
"Doctor, what do you plan to do regarding Vander's humanity awakening experiment?"
Approaching Vander, Link observed Janna standing atop Vander's head while humming an unknown tune. This seemed to have a magical soothing effect on him as his tense face relaxed slightly.
"What is this—"
Singed did not respond but instead stared at Vander in confusion.
"My goddess! What have you done?" Singed asked Janna perplexedly. Janna huffed indignantly. "I'm merely using ancient melodies to help stabilize his fragmented mental state."
"You can stabilize his mind?" Link was genuinely surprised. Janna expressed her dissatisfaction: "Hey! Although I've lost all my divine power now, I'm still a goddess!"
"Even if my past powers are unusable, my accumulated experience and knowledge over countless ages are not trivial."
"Can you awaken him?" Link asked with trembling anticipation. Janna nodded. "Of course! However, his mental fragmentation is severe. To fully awaken him will take quite some time."
"How long specifically?" Link pressed eagerly. After pondering for a moment, Janna replied: "Approximately five to seven days. The beastly instincts within him are too strong and violent; I need to suppress those instincts step by step while awakening his humanity."
"Five to seven days!"
Link contemplated for a moment before asking Singed: "Doctor, what are your thoughts on resolving Vander's issues?"
"I can't directly help Vander restore his mind like Goddess Janna can. In fact, current scientific methods cannot penetrate into the mental realm of biology," Singed said with a complex expression. "My idea is quite simple: Vander has become a beast now; his beastly instincts completely overshadow his humanity."
"Since beastly instincts dominate him, we can find ways to suppress those instincts and liberate his humanity."
"What specific methods do you propose?"
"Tame him through sheer force." Singed's gaze fell upon Link. "Just like how humans domesticated the first dog—using force to make him submit."
"If we do that," he continued, "his beastly instincts will temporarily recede; we can then use external stimuli to awaken his humanity."
"So your method is somewhat similar to Janna's," Link crossed his arms thoughtfully. "The difference being that Janna focuses on the mental aspect while you specialize in physical aspects."
"Hmmm—" Link's eyes lit up. "Perhaps we can combine both methods: use force to tame and suppress Vander's beastly instincts while employing Janna's power to awaken his humanity."
"That sounds feasible; however—" Singed hesitated before continuing. Janna raised her head defiantly. "I will not abandon Zaun's children! Moreover, I have already heard this child's cries for help."
Janna lifted her wings and gently touched Vander's head. Link immediately declared: "Then it's settled!"
"We'll combine theology and science to treat Vander."
"If all goes smoothly—" Link began when Singed quickly interjected: "We should see results by that day."
"But can your exoskeleton handle this?" Singed looked at Link questioningly.
Link smiled confidently: "I've already developed the clockwork electric engine; upgrading the exoskeleton is just a matter of time."
"Moreover, with the current exoskeleton as a framework, upgrading won't take too long—at most one and a half to two days!"
"But during this period—" Link turned seriously toward Janna: "I hope you can help me keep an eye on Dual Cities and gather as much intelligence as possible. It took great effort to stabilize things; we absolutely cannot let them continue heading toward collapse."
