Chapter 101: Chapter 101: Thank You for the Compliment
General Archer staggered back two steps, his heart pounding as though it would burst from his chest.
This sensation was familiar yet long forgotten.
Years ago, during his time as a soldier, a live bomb had landed at his feet during a skirmish on foreign soil.
It had been a dud.
Back then, his relief was overwhelming—just as it was now.
Moments ago, the supposed Kryptonian had unleashed devastating heat beams, tearing through the convoy and incinerating everything in their path.
The general had steeled himself for death.
But just before the beams reached him, a shadow descended from the sky, shielding him from the blinding and searing light.
Now, as the radiant heat faded, he could make out a red cape billowing like flames in the wind.
A towering figure stood before him like a fortress, radiating an aura of unwavering strength and safety.
"Superman?" Archer whispered in disbelief.
Ever since the courthouse explosion, Superman had vanished, leading many to believe he had turned his back on humanity.
But here he was.
He had returned.
"General."
Clark Kent turned slightly and nodded before shifting his gaze to the arrogant figure clad in black, hovering in the sky.
"Are you Kryptonian?"
Clark glanced at his hands, the heat marks from deflecting the beams still glowing faintly on his suit. The red patches quickly dissipated.
He ascended into the sky until he was level with Homelander.
Clark's eyes glowed faintly red as he scanned the man before him.
Homelander immediately noticed the probing sensation. Smirking, he activated Insight, turning the tables.
---
[Name: Clark Kent (Superman)]
[Life Level: 5 (Transcendent)]
[Status: Normal]
[Abilities: Heat Vision, Invulnerable Body, Bio-Force Field, Super Speed, Super Strength, Super Intelligence.]
[Your "Insight +1" skill has reached maximum proficiency.]
[Skill upgraded to "Insight +2."]
---
Well, would you look at that, Homelander mused. Just one glance and it leveled up.
As expected of Superman—he's at the same life level as me.
His abilities are almost identical, though he's clearly not at his peak yet.
Homelander grinned. "DC's golden boy really is impressive," he muttered. His competitive side flared. A part of him wanted to test his strength against this legendary opponent.
After all, he wasn't the same Homelander from the Black Noir comics. He had grown far stronger. And what better way to gain proficiency in his abilities than by facing an evenly matched foe?
Meanwhile, Clark felt a strange, uncomfortable sensation as though the man before him had stripped away all his defenses.
His brow furrowed.
"Answer me."
Homelander chuckled. "I don't see why I owe you an explanation, Mr. Justice."
"Besides, I'm surprised. After everything that's happened, you still choose to protect humanity. Haven't they disappointed you yet?"
Clark glanced down at the burning wreckage, his voice steady.
"My father once told me this world is filled with beauty."
"Even amidst darkness, there's light. That's something worth believing in."
Homelander raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Admirable. Truly admirable."
"It takes a rare kind of courage to hold onto such faith—to look for untainted flowers in a sewer full of rats."
"Me? I could never do it. And honestly? I wouldn't want to."
Clark's frown deepened. "Who are you, really?"
Homelander laughed, his hands resting on his hips. "Does it matter? Let's just say I'm a passing traveler."
"You're a very dangerous traveler," Clark retorted, his gaze drifting to the wreckage below—the smoldering vehicles and injured soldiers writhing in pain.
"What you've done is excessive."
Homelander's laugh rang out again. "Oh, please. Excessive? You mean their attempts to kill me weren't?"
"This wasn't excessive—it was a lesson. Painful, yes, but effective."
"Think of it like when your dad disciplined you as a child."
Clark shook his head. "My father never resorted to such barbarity."
Homelander grinned. "Well, I guess he raised you to be a saint. Good for him. But let me be clear—I'm not you, nor do I want to be."
Clark's voice grew sterner. "Your actions show who you truly are. You've crossed a line."
Homelander clapped his hands mockingly. "You want to save humanity? Fine. Be their guiding light. Be their crutch. Become the savior your father dreamed of."
"But don't impose your ideals on me. Don't mistake me for one of your sheep."
Clark's fists tightened, his glowing eyes betraying his growing anger. "Your ideology is dangerous, especially for someone with your power."
Homelander shrugged nonchalantly. "So?"
"So, you need to be restrained," Clark replied, his voice hardening. "Without it, you're a disaster waiting to happen—a walking apocalypse."
Homelander placed a hand over his chest and gave a mock bow. "Thank you for the compliment."
"But that's your problem, Superman. You've already judged me guilty before I've done anything truly destructive."
Clark's eyes burned brighter. "Destroying a military convoy doesn't count as destructive?"
