Death Saga

Chapter 4: Top Floor Conversations

"Warrior of legends?" The dwarf said mockingly. "Use your senses, this man doesn't have a drop of magic in him."

"But still, the legends goes like a warrior of magic who can travel between dimensions will defeat the demon king before he destroys the world, and there hasn't been anyone who can travel between dimensions since time of old."

"The demon king was already defeat by Kingmage, did you forget?"

"Oh, yeah, I totally forgot about that."

"So no warrior of legend." Raven deduced. "I am just another man with a magic stick."

"Not quite." The dwarf said. "You must learn how to use the sword, but I don't think it's worth, most weapons like this just have some stupid ability, I bet this one can summon a bee from another dimension every five years or something."

"But then." Raven said. "It might be worth it."

"Only time will tell."

A while later, Raven is in Giren's office.

"Then I returned the sword and he said he will deliver the weapons by tomorrow." Raven said.

"Did you change your weapon change?" Giren asked.

"Yeah, my old one broke."

"I would've saved you the trouble, I am pretty sure I have one like that laying around, anyway, your reward is a hundred silver coins."

"Isn't that a bit less than what I deserve?"

"The rest you earned in trust, if I trust you, you get better missions."

"How about you check the fifth floor, it's empty now."

"That's better, I wanted to have sometime with myself."

Raven enters the fifth floor, he looks around, on the wall on his right is a mission board, across of his is various arcades, this place is quite advanced, to his left is couches and tables where mercs hang out, far to his left is a bar with a robot bartender, behind the counter is the door to the sixth floor.

Raven walked to the bar and looked at the robot.

"You kinda look like a human." Raven said.

"That's the point, so how may I help you?" The robot said.

"What's this place?"

"This is where top tier mercs hang out after or before tiring jobs."

"And what's the door next to you?"

"The door to the sixth floor, the training area, I could unlock it for you."

"No need, can you play some music?"

"Yes, what do you want to play?"

"Something I can't focus while listening to, some hard rock."

"Sure, are you planning to have a party?"

"No, meditating."

"That seems counter intuitive."

"It's training, I need to be able to focus no matter the situation."

"Sure, but I don't think the others would like it."

"Turn it off when they come."

"Okie dokie."

Raven headed to the middle of the room and he sat on the floor, with his eyes closed he meditated.

After an hour, two mercs arrived, Fox, the archeress and Wolf, the hunter.

"Robo, play some jazz." Fox said.

"And two cold drinks." Wolf said.

The two tired sat on the couch drinking oblivious to the presence of a third merc, Raven stood up, Wolf saw him and greeted him.

"You must be the fresh blood, I barely felt your presence, you magic control must be amazing." Wolf said.

"Nope, I have no magic in me, nothing at all." Raven said.

"So how come you're on top floor?"

"There's more to him than what meets the eye, babe." Fox said.

"Brains then." Wolf said. "Giren has been talking lately about wanting to recruit someone who has some brains."

"But we do have brains already." Fox said. "You can't hunt a prey if you don't have brains."

"Well, we have brains but not what Giren requires." Wolf said. "We're bloodthirsty hunters chasing after the thrill of the hunt, aren't we?"

"YES WE ARE." Fox said.

"But this one seems calm and collected." Wolf said.

"I can't enjoy a fight without a clear mind." Raven said. "I was a very anxious kid, I loved fighting but my anxiety will get in the way and I will fuck and lose, best case scenario, I win but it's the worst thing that I've gone through."

"Let's stop here, I really need some rest, you're welcome to join us for a drink." Wolf said.

"I would pass." Raven said.

Raven got a seat across of the robot.

"No magic, you know you're one of a kind." Robo remarked.

"Yes I am, get me some lemonade." Raven said.

"You know, people who can't use magic are called proto-humans, it's the term used to describe people that existed before magic spread, humans who haven't yet developed mana veins."

"Interesting, but I am pretty sure I can't be having the same problem as them, they no longer exist, right?"

"Well, you're right, your case must be different, though you lack mana veins like them but there must be different hidden mechanisms in play."

"So you got any guesses?"

"Either you're really unlucky and somehow didn't develop mana veins when in your mother's womb or you have access to a higher power which you still can't use."

"I doubt it, I know everything about my body, even fiber of one of my muscles were to be slightly damaged I would know."

"Well, there's a third possiblity, you have transcended humans, it's just not enough time passed for you or us to observe the difference."

"So I need to have kids who will have kids who will be different and then we can tell what's wrong with me."

"Let's settle this matter aside, my processors are overheating, here's your lemonade."

"Thank you."

"What's on your schedule."

"Training until the sun falls down then I come back tomorrow morning get a look at the misssion board."
