Chapter 23: Chapter 23: So Skilled?
As the group chatted casually, the door finally opened again.
Qu Jueliang and Zhao Jian walked in, leading the way.
"Director Qu, Director Zhao—hello!"
The crowd stood up and greeted them enthusiastically.
Qu Jueliang waved his hand with a smile, signaling everyone to sit down.
"With only two weeks for preparation, I'll keep this brief. Aside from table reads and acting rehearsals, you'll need to train in martial arts, weapon handling, horseback riding, and wirework…"
Zhao Jian nodded, adding,
"Especially martial arts and wirework. Most of you don't have much experience, so it'll take at least a week of training to look halfway decent."
He paused, then turned to Du Sheng and asked,
"Yuan Bin hasn't arrived yet. Could you step in and guide the group on martial arts training for now?"
Martial arts scenes are central to the show, and while they didn't expect everyone to master them, the movements at least had to appear convincing.
As the action director, Zhao Jian had the skills to teach, but his focus was on the lead actors, Hu Jun and Alec Su, who had no prior experience and required individual attention. He couldn't manage the entire group.
Yuan Bin, a renowned martial arts choreographer from Hong Kong, had been brought in to assist. However, with multiple ongoing projects across Hong Kong and mainland China, his schedule was stretched thin.
Having seen Du Sheng's martial arts skills, Zhao Jian was confident that he could handle guiding the cast for a day or two.
"Sure, no problem."
Du Sheng agreed readily.
Though it was a laborious task, it elevated his status and helped build connections within the crew. Plus, with his mastery of the "Action Choreography" skill and "Eight Extremities Fist", he was more than qualified to demonstrate foundational techniques like stances, balance, and movement.
Zhao Jian nodded in satisfaction.
"For the next two days, focus on basic stances and a few simple moves. Once Yuan Bin arrives, he'll take over."
Hearing this, the cast members exchanged surprised glances, their curiosity about Du Sheng growing.
"So capable?"
Liu Tao and Wang Yi's eyes lit up. As soon as the directors left, they eagerly surrounded Du Sheng.
"Du Sheng, you really know martial arts? Teach us sometime!"
Even Liu Yifei stood up, her gaze filled with curiosity.
She had witnessed Du Sheng's martial arts performance during his audition but hadn't realized he had earned such high praise from Zhao Jian.
Smiling, Du Sheng raised his hand modestly.
"I picked up some Eight Extremities Fist, kickboxing, and boxing from my foster father when I was younger—just the basics. I wouldn't call it expertise, but I'd be happy to share what I know."
Despite his humility, the others could tell that the directors' trust wasn't baseless.
"Since you're all interested, I'll share a few pointers."
Adopting an Eight Extremities stance, Du Sheng demonstrated the fundamentals:
"When it comes to martial arts or weapon handling, the most important thing is having a stable foundation. Without rooted feet, your body will sway, making your movements look unconvincing.
"The waist is the axis of the body, controlling all limb movements. Watch carefully."
Planting his toes firmly on the ground, Du Sheng twisted his waist and released a punch.
The power started from his waist, traveled through his back and shoulders, and exploded at his fist. The force of the punch was so strong that his sleeve snapped audibly in the air.
The group's eyes widened. It was clear why the directors trusted him—this was no amateur display.
"To perform convincingly, you need solid stance training and core strength. Let's start with basic stances."
Demonstrating each step with precision, Du Sheng walked the group through the fundamentals.
His focused demeanor and fluid movements captivated the cast, especially the actresses. Liu Yifei and Liu Tao couldn't help but steal glances, their admiration evident.
Du Sheng's charisma, combined with his martial prowess, left a lasting impression.
The following day, Zhao Jian began teaching weapon techniques. To his surprise, the group's posture and energy had noticeably improved.
After learning it was Du Sheng's doing, Zhao Jian couldn't help but admire the young man's talent.
On the third day, during combat choreography rehearsals, Du Sheng impressed everyone by flawlessly replicating Zhao Jian's intricate movements after just one demonstration.
Zhao Jian, intrigued by Du Sheng's abilities, posed a challenging question about countering specific techniques.
Du Sheng, drawing on his experience and "Action Choreography" skill, quickly devised an elegant and effective solution.
Zhao Jian felt as though he had discovered a hidden gem. He even asked Du Sheng to design a sequence of moves for an upcoming scene.
Combining elements of Tiger-Crane Boxing and Eight Trigrams Palm, Du Sheng crafted a dynamic and visually striking combat sequence.
Impressed by his creativity and skill, Zhao Jian decided to make an unconventional proposal.
"How about taking on the role of an action consultant for the show?"
Though it was uncommon for an actor to double as a consultant, Zhao Jian saw Du Sheng's potential and wanted to capitalize on it.
For Du Sheng, the added responsibility came with a pay raise of 20,000 yuan—a welcome bonus.
As the cast continued to train, Du Sheng's reputation grew. The actors appreciated his guidance, and the directors valued his expertise.
By the end of the week, Du Sheng had firmly established himself as a key member of the production.
