Chapter 41: Chapter 41: "Almost Half, There’s a Generation Gap"

As for the woman in question, Du Sheng could only say: completely unexpected!

Looking at her coquettish demeanor, he felt a bit overwhelmed.

Where was the model hero? The promised purity and grace? Her image was utterly shattered!

For someone who just stumbled upon this scandalous sight, keeping his composure wasn't easy.

As the saying goes: even objects leave marks after they pass—how could people be any different?

Du Sheng looked around, picked up a stone, wrapped it in leaves, and weighed it in his hand.

Clang!

The next moment, chaos erupted: startled shouts, frantic scuffling, and hurried steps echoed into the distance.

It even woke up quite a few night owls in the crew.

Back at the campsite, Du Sheng, ever the curious bystander, craned his neck to observe.

He estimated it wouldn't take long before the rumors started flying. The crew had been lacking "positive energy" stories or gossip lately. Bored reporters hanging around were sure to relish the extra heat.

---

The next day, as expected, someone called in sick, claiming to have accidentally injured their leg during a late-night outing.

This was a big deal since the person had an important role, even drawing Zhang Dahuzi's attention.

After some discussion, the crew had to switch to filming Ling Zhiying's scenes.

This, in turn, brought forward Du Sheng's scenes as well, making the situation a "happy accident" for him. His filming schedule sped up significantly.

For half a month, he worked tirelessly, leaving only a few scenes with his "cousin," Wang Yuyan, to wrap up.

---

Meanwhile, at an off-campus apartment near the Beijing Film Academy, Liu Yifei sat at her desk in an adorable panda-print nightgown, engrossed in her script.

"Xixi, it's time to rest," her mother, Liu Xiaoli, said gently as she returned home with groceries.

"You have an early flight tomorrow, don't forget."

"Got it, Mom!" Liu Yifei replied with a sweet smile but quickly returned to her script, murmuring, "I have a shoot tomorrow afternoon. I need to make sure I've memorized everything."

Seeing her daughter so focused warmed Liu Xiaoli's heart. She set down the groceries and began tidying up, occasionally glancing at the clock. As midnight approached, she tried again to persuade her daughter.

"Xixi, you're still growing. If you don't get enough rest, it'll affect your performance. Why not review on the plane tomorrow instead?"

"I'm almost done! You go to bed first, Mom," Liu Yifei replied softly but didn't leave her seat.

Liu Xiaoli sighed, a mix of pride and exasperation. Just as she was about to say more, a notification chimed.

Liu Yifei picked up her phone, smiling brightly as she read a QQ message.

"Was it the director? Has the shoot been postponed?" Liu Xiaoli asked curiously, leaning in for a peek.

"It's from my cousin," Liu Yifei said cheerfully. "He asked if we'd like him to pick us up tomorrow."

After replying, she set down her script and phone, climbed into bed, and promptly fell asleep, clearly having been coaxed into resting.

Watching this unfold, Liu Xiaoli fell into deep thought.

She had spent the last few minutes cajoling and persuading her daughter to no avail. Yet a single message from that man, and Xixi obediently went to bed.

Was it her parenting that had failed, or was Xixi the problem?

Liu Yifei yawned lazily, half-asleep as she murmured, "Mom, get some rest too. Cousin's picking us up from the mountains tomorrow~!"

"Xixi," Liu Xiaoli hesitated, deciding it was time to have a serious conversation.

Over the past few weeks, she'd been preoccupied with school matters and various social obligations, leaving little time to address what she had overheard at the restaurant. With the two set to meet tomorrow, she couldn't let this slide any longer.

"Mom, what's up?" Liu Yifei rubbed her eyes, clearly drowsy.

"You and Du Sheng haven't known each other that long, have you? Why do you call him 'cousin' so affectionately?"

Liu Xiaoli had planned to ask about their relationship directly but softened her approach, mindful of her daughter's teenage defiance.

"Cousin—it's a good thing, isn't it? I call him that in the show too!" Liu Yifei replied matter-of-factly.

"But that's just acting," Liu Xiaoli reasoned. "You also call Ling Zhiying 'Brother Duan' on set, but you don't seem to interact with him much off-screen."

Her underlying question: why the disparity?

However, Liu Yifei, being naturally naive and half-asleep, didn't think much of it. "Zhiying? He's 29—almost half my age older than me. There's a generation gap, you know."

---

Meanwhile, somewhere in the world, Ling Zhiying sneezed violently.

Liu Xiaoli was momentarily stunned, caught off guard by her daughter's response.

But when Liu Yifei talked about Du Sheng, her interest was immediately piqued. She smiled dreamily, her fair cheeks glowing:

"Cousin's different! He's so funny and knowledgeable. No matter what I ask, he always has the answer…"

Hearing her daughter enthusiastically list off Du Sheng's traits, Liu Xiaoli's expression grew increasingly complicated.

On one hand, she was relieved that Xixi seemed to view Du Sheng as more of a mentor than a romantic prospect. On the other hand, Xixi's admiration and trust in him were undeniable, and any criticism of him would likely provoke backlash.

At this age, Xixi's temperament was as fickle as summer weather—prone to sudden and dramatic shifts. Liu Xiaoli had always tread carefully, avoiding harsh words to prevent unnecessary conflicts.

After a moment's thought, she decided to take a different approach.

"Xixi, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils is a major production. If you love acting, focus on doing your best. This could be your stepping stone to bigger opportunities. Don't let outside influences distract you."

Years ago, Liu Xiaoli had left home and made countless sacrifices to provide her daughter with a better environment. Now, she was determined to protect Xixi's budding career at all costs.

"Got it, Mom," Liu Yifei replied listlessly, her excitement fading. "Tomorrow, I'll ask Cousin to help me rehearse. His memory is amazing, and he always helps me get into character."

Liu Xiaoli: "…"

Does this girl even hear herself?

She wanted to say more but decided against it.

Some things couldn't be rushed. She believed her daughter was sensible enough to avoid making naive mistakes.

And besides…

In less than a month, the shoot would end. With no contact or meetings, everything would naturally fade away into distant memories—or so she hoped.

---

The next afternoon, they arrived in Yunfu Licheng.

"Cousin?" Liu Yifei's eyes lit up as she spotted a familiar car approaching.

She waved enthusiastically, her voice brimming with excitement.

"Cousin! Over here! We're over here!"

Liu Xiaoli: "…"

This girl…
