Chapter 11: The Banished Young Girl and the Creation of the Field
I had intended to turn all the remaining copse into skeletons, but after creating up to G-7, my magical energy was exhausted.
It was disappointing, but it seemed this was my current limit.
Reluctantly, I decided to extract only the remaining burnt skeleton bones, bury the rest by digging a hole in the ground, and return to the village.
The next morning, after restoring my magical energy, I came back to the same spot as yesterday, only to find that the bones had been piled up in one place. Nearby, G-1 to G-7 stood around looking lost.
“Wow, this is impressive…”
“Yeah. I never thought they’d do such a perfect job…”
I proceeded to turn the remaining bones into skeletons as well. By the time I had created up to G-14, my magical energy was depleted again. So, I had the remaining skeletons carry the bones back to the village.
Over the next two days, I managed to turn all the skeletons into a total of twenty-six goblin skeletons.
Now, what should I have them do?
The pressing issue is food, so maybe it would be best to have them create a field?
In that case, I should probably consult Bob.
Alright, let’s go see Bob.
So, I went to Bob with G-1 in tow. Bob was in the middle of some kind of consultation, and Will was there with him.
Perfect timing.
“Bob! And Will too.”
“Hey.”
“Ah, My Lady How can I assist you today?”
“Well, actually, I’ve made some skilled skeletons, and I want to use them to plant crops for this winter in the field we’re clearing.”
“Winter crops? For this year?”
“Yeah.”
“But if you want to be ready for winter, we have less than a month left for planting.”
“But if we hurry, we might just make it in time, right?”
“Well, that’s true…”
“Then let’s hurry up. It’s better to have more food.”
“I suppose so.”
“Great, it’s settled then. You can decide what to grow and use the other skeletons to help out.”
“Understood.”
“And Will.”
“Yeah?”
“You mentioned you’d be surrounding the field with a wall?”
“Yeah, that’s right. Otherwise, pests and monsters will devour everything.”
“Then could you build the wall only around the area where the planting will be done? Like this.”
I drew a rectangle in the dirt with a stick, dividing it into several sections with lines.
“Ah, so these lines are for pathways later.”
“Got it. You’re coming up with some really clever ideas.”
“Really? Well, anyway, thanks for handling this!”
“Alright, understood.”
So, I left the task of creating the field to Bob and Will.
—
A week later, I went to check on the field, which had made progress.
To my surprise, part of the field had a wall, or rather a stone wall, about as tall as me. Additionally, there was even a moat around it.
“Wow, it’s more impressive than I expected.”
“Yeah, those goblin skeletons are incredibly capable.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. They work non-stop day and night and even use tools properly.”
“Wow, they can use tools too.”
“Not only that, they’ve learned how to build earthworks and stack stones…”
Incredible. I never imagined goblin skeletons could be this efficient.
“We mostly just gave instructions. They’re currently building the stone wall for the second field over there.”
“Indeed.”
Goblin skeletons were diligently stacking stones… wait a minute.
“By the way, where did they get those stones from?”
“Oh, they were instructed to fetch them and they brought them from somewhere on their own.”
“Really? They went out and found them on their own!?”
“Yeah.”
“Wow, that’s amazing.”
“It’s pretty awesome, right? Makes things a lot easier.”
I was so impressed that I couldn’t think of any words other than “amazing.”
“By the way, Your Highness, you came to see the field, right?”
“Oh! Right. Can you show me around?”
“Sure, follow me.”
Will guided me across a simple bridge made of logs over the moat, and we entered the field. There, a beautifully cultivated field with neatly spaced rows of black soil was spread out before us.
“Wow! Your Highness!”
“Ah! Bob! How’s it looking?”
“Yes, as you can see, we’ve finished the first section of the potato field. At this rate, we should be able to complete three more potato fields, and the remaining fields should be ready for beans in time.”
“That’s great news.”
“It’s all thanks to you, Your Highness. When I first heard from Will that the skeletons were goblins, I was shocked. But to think these hated goblins would be this useful…”
“Yeah, I didn’t expect these skeletons to be so capable either.”
“If they’re this useful, we could use more of them.”
“Indeed.”
I’d definitely want as many as possible. They don’t cost anything to keep around.
