Chapter 12: The Banished Young Girl Faces Goblins Again
As the second field was completed and I was happily handling administrative tasks with Marie, Will burst in with a panicked expression.
“My Lady! It’s bad!”
“Calm down! And use proper titles!”
“Marie, it’s not the time for that!”
“What’s wrong, Will?”
“Goblins!”
“Again?”
“Exactly! And this time, they’re near the village.”
“Near? How near?”
“Very close. About the same distance as from here to the main gate.”
“What!? That’s really close!”
“Which forest?”
“South.”
“South? That’s…”
“Yes, which means the goblins have probably already found this place and are planning an attack.”
“What do you mean?”
“Since multiple goblins are coming, they must have found something and are moving.”
“Oh, I see. Last time it was just one goblin.”
“Yeah. So, if there are as many as last time, it’ll be dangerous, and we need to escape quickly.”
“I understand. Then, let’s strike out as we did before.”
“That would be ideal, but…”
“What’s the problem?”
“Uh, that is—”
Suddenly, a loud bell rang outside.
“What’s that bell?”
“Damn it!”
“What? What’s happening?”
“Oh! Sorry, that’s the warning bell. It signals that enemies are approaching. Given the timing, it’s probably goblins.”
“What!? Already?”
“Yeah. They must be coming in massive numbers…”
“Got it. I’ll go too. Marie, inform the villagers to evacuate according to the training!”
“Yes, understood. Please be careful, Your Highness.”
“Okay.”
Thus, I set out with Will to intercept the goblins that were attacking the village.
When we arrived at the village’s main gate, it appeared that the gate hadn’t been breached yet. However, from outside the gate, we could hear the unpleasant cries of goblins and the sounds of intense battle.
“Everyone!”
“‘Your Highness!’”
“Is anyone injured?”
“Yes. Fortunately, no casualties so far.”
“Good. What’s the situation?”
“Not good. Judging by the sounds, there are nearly a hundred of them.”
“That many!?”
“Yes. It’s only a matter of time before they break through the gate.”
“Understood. Let’s try to reduce their numbers, even if it’s just a few. We’ll do it like last time.”
With my instructions, everyone’s faces showed relief.
“Alright! Let’s go!”
“Yes!”
We rushed outside the gate.
About ten men were fighting, and beyond them, goblins were swarming in.
Frankly, it was a battle of numbers against us.
Though there were no deaths, the men were in rough shape. It was only a matter of time before they would be overwhelmed.
I began binding the souls of the goblins closest to us, immobilizing them.
“Everyone! Take advantage of this!”
“Oh! It’s the Princess!”
“Woohoo! With this, we can win!”
The men quickly took down the immobilized goblins one by one.
“Gigi!?”
“Gyaaa!”
“Gik! Gik!”
Despite that, the goblins didn’t stop. Relying on their numbers, they pressed their attack, literally stepping over their fallen comrades in a wave-like assault.
Ah! They’re so persistent! Even after killing so many!
“Gik!?”
“Gyaaaa!”
“Gyaa!”
Suddenly, the goblins’ wave attack ceased, and they turned around, retreating into the forest.
“Huh? What’s happening?”
“Maybe they decided they couldn’t win…”
As I muttered, Will responded from the side.
“Hmm, is that so?”
“Yes, goblins are quite clever. They’ll retreat when they realize they can’t win.”
“Really? They’re that smart? I suppose they do use tools. Is this kind of thing common?”
“Yes. Even when we were thieves, we’d see them retreat like this. Usually, they don’t come back after that.”
“Got it.”
I looked at everyone else besides Will. They all nodded in agreement, supporting Will’s assessment.
I see. This must be based on Will’s experience fighting goblins when he was a thief.
That means his understanding is likely more accurate than mine, based only on theoretical knowledge.
“Okay, understood.”
Still, their efficiency made me a bit uneasy.
“But…”
“Yes?”
“Sorry, but could you handle the goblin corpses?”
“What!?”
Everyone except Will frowned at my request.
“Yeah, I know it’s unpleasant, but we missed quite a few, right?”
“Yes.”
“So, I plan to turn all of them into skeletons to strengthen our defenses. They might be weak, but they should serve as shields for everyone. Goblin skeletons are smart.”
“Ah, I see… I see… I see…”
Will repeated this several times, convincing himself.
“Sorry about that. I know it’s gross, but we can’t burn them here…”
“Ugh… I understand…”
Will then squeezed his eyes shut, slapped his cheeks with both hands, and shouted.
“Alright! Got it! You guys! It’s the Ladyship’s order! Move the goblin corpses! They’re material for skeletons!”
“…Understood.”
“Got it.”
With somewhat lackluster responses, Will and the others began to carry the goblin corpses.
Yeah. It’s definitely unpleasant. I’m really sorry!
