Chapter 13: The Banished Young Girl Faces a Night Raid
After creating five skeletons from the goblin corpses and setting them to guard the village perimeter, I decided to call back some of the goblin skeletons working in the fields to bolster our defenses.
Despite taking these precautions, the ominous warning bell rang in the dead of night, jolting me awake. Startled by the loud sound, I sprang out of bed.
“Marie!”
“Yes, My Lady! Leave it to me!”
I entrusted Marie with evacuating the villagers and hurriedly changed clothes before dashing out of the house. In the dim light, I saw Will running toward me in a panic.
“My Lady!”
“Will! What’s the situation?”
“I’m not sure! But it seems the goblins have discovered something.”
“I see.”
I was relieved I hadn’t used up all my magical energy on skeletons; it meant we could still fight.
“Where are they?”
“It looks like they’re targeting the back gate.”
“Got it. Let’s hurry!”
“Yes!”
We raced towards the back gate, joined by several young village men, forming a group of about ten. Among them were some injured from the earlier goblin fight.
“Are you okay? Don’t push yourself too hard.”
“Yes, My Lady! It’s a critical situation for the village, so if there’s anything I can do to help, I will.”
“Thank you.”
As we conversed, we reached the back gate.
However, the gate was firmly closed, and there was no sign of goblins from the outside.
“Huh?”
“This is strange. The goblins should know there’s an entrance here…”
The alarm continued to sound. This meant that one of the goblin skeletons in the forest had spotted monsters and was ringing the bell.
“G-9, where are the goblins?”
*Knock, knock.*
The gate was knocked twice from the outside. Two knocks meant that no goblins were currently at the gate.
What’s going on?
Just then, a loud crashing noise came from the north.
“What?”
“What’s that sound?”
We exchanged worried glances, and the worst-case scenario flashed in my mind.
“Don’t tell me the goblins have breached the northern wall!”
What!?
Will and the others gasped in shock.
“Let’s go!”
“Yes!”
We retraced our steps, rushing towards the northern side of the village. Since there were livestock pens there, immediate human casualties were unlikely, but losing the livestock was a critical issue for the village.
But…
“Pant, pant, pant, sorry. Everyone, go ahead. If you match my pace…”
“Then I’ll carry you,My Lady! Excuse me!”
“Eh? Eek!?”
Will scooped me up effortlessly and resumed running.
So high up! And so fast, so fast!
He was running at least twice, no, maybe three times faster than me.
This must be what it feels like to be carried by an adult man.
His muscles were so solid; if Will exerted himself, it felt like my body could be easily crushed.
But… maybe it’s not so bad being carried by a man?
Before long, we arrived near the livestock pens.
“Gigyagigya!”
“Gigyaa!”
“Gyak, gyak!”
We were too late! The goblins had already infiltrated the livestock pens!
Furthermore, one section of the northern wall had collapsed, and a massive horde of goblins was pouring through.
This is bad! If this continues, the villagers will be in danger!
“Will! I’ll hold them off!”
“Yes!”
I began binding the souls of nearby goblins, immobilizing them while Will and the others dealt with the paralyzed goblins.
The strategy was still effective. The immobilized goblins fell one by one.
But… there were just too many!
The goblins that we couldn’t stop slipped past us, scattering throughout the village.
No! This can’t continue!
“G-1! Go to the field and call back all the remaining skeletons! G-2, G-3, G-4, take down the goblins that entered the village! Protect the villagers!”
*Clang, clatter, clatter.*
The goblin skeletons sprang into action.
G-1 dashed toward the back gate, while the others chased after the escaping goblins.
“Will! Everyone! We’ll hold them off here!”
“Yes!”
I continued binding the souls of goblins in front of me, and Will and the others took down each immobilized goblin one by one.
Thus began our long and arduous battle.
