Chapter 60: Giant step-and-step game
David stepped out of Snape's office, clutching a bottle filled with a dark red potion. Exhausted, he leaned against the wall and sighed, feeling as though he had spent an eternity in the tense atmosphere of the Potions Master's lair, even though it had only been a couple of hours. The pressure of making a mistake loomed over him, as Snape's wrath was well-known among students.
Finally free from Snape's watchful eyes, David made his way to Hagrid's cabin. He knocked on the door, and Hagrid opened it with a loud exclamation. "David! Where have you been? Dumbledore asked me to take you to treat the unicorn, but I waited for ages!" Hagrid's disappointment was palpable as he explained that he had already gone to check on the unicorn himself. "Your bandaging was good, but it didn't seem too fond of me," he added, recalling how the creature had fled at his approach.
Hagrid was eager to get moving. "Let's go to the forest first! The unicorn is waiting for you!" He pulled David along, his grip surprisingly strong. "Ouch! Hagrid, can you ease up a bit?" David winced.
"Sorry! I get a bit carried away," Hagrid said sheepishly as he released David's arm and awkwardly waved his hands in the air, unsure how to help without causing more pain.
Once they reached the edge of the Forbidden Forest, David prepared to use his magic. He took out a vial containing unicorn hair and waved his wand while saying, "Hair compass!" The long white strand floated out and began to drift in one direction.
"That's amazing magic!" Hagrid exclaimed, watching in awe. "Can you teach me?"
Before David could respond, Hagrid's mood shifted as he remembered his own limitations. "Oh right, I forgot—I can't learn magic anymore," he said with a hint of sadness.
David reassured him, "You're the guardian of this forest! You don't need magic; you can find anything here without it." Hagrid seemed to perk up at this compliment.
As they walked deeper into the woods, they heard a rustling noise nearby. Hagrid instinctively dropped into a defensive stance, readying his crossbow. "Who's there?" he called out.
David squinted into the bushes and replied cautiously, "Hagrid, don't worry; it's probably just my friend." Hagrid lowered his weapon slightly but remained alert.
Moments later, a small snow-white creature emerged from the underbrush. It struggled momentarily before darting over to David and affectionately rubbing against his leg. Soon after, two more sables—a white one and a gray one—joined them. The white sable nuzzled David while the gray one approached more cautiously.
"How do you know these earth minks?" Hagrid asked excitedly as he knelt down to pet them. However, they skittered away from him; not every creature was comfortable around such a large giant.
"I met them at the edge of the forest," David replied, feeling guilty for not mentioning it earlier.
As they continued walking, Hagrid and the sables started playing a game where they would run ahead and dodge Hagrid's giant feet as he pretended to stomp down on them. Laughter filled the air as Hagrid exaggerated his movements to give them time to escape.
After some playful moments, David noticed that they were getting closer to where the unicorn awaited them. "Hagrid! Over here!" he called out.
"Oh right!" Hagrid replied as he stopped playing and followed David through the trees.
When they reached a clearing not far from where the unicorn stood, David spotted it alongside a smaller unicorn with shiny silver hair—its head still bare without horns. David knew that young unicorns had golden hair that turned silver by age two and would grow horns by age four.
As they approached, the adult unicorn became skittish and prepared to flee again. The little unicorn raised its hooves in warning at David, clearly agitated by their presence.
David halted in his tracks but noticed that the adult unicorn seemed protective and even snorted at its young one when it acted up. This made David smile as he carefully approached the adult unicorn to check its leg bandage.
The wound was healing nicely under his care. He gently unwrapped it and applied the potion he had prepared earlier while keeping an eye on the little unicorn that curiously watched him from a distance.
After tending to its injury, David turned around to see Hagrid watching intently from afar with envy in his eyes. "Hagrid," David said softly, "just take it slow. Don't think about anything else."
Hagrid nodded earnestly and took slow steps toward the unicorns while David continued to calm them with gentle touches on their backs. As Hagrid got closer, three earth minks sprang out from behind him again, adding an element of playful chaos to their encounter with these magical creatures.
The bond between David and these majestic beings deepened as they all shared this moment in the enchanting Forbidden Forest—a place where magic thrived and friendships blossomed amidst nature's wonders.
