Chapter 4: § The Shadowy Past §
Evee Eloine Evergarden. A girl with a bittersweet past. One might even say, she had seen the world through all shades of colours. It's fairness amd unfairness that surrounded her her entire life.
Evee would be the epitome of a perfect girl. Since she was young she was always cheerful and open minded. She had also been an honest and upright person.
Evee had experienced the life's best moments. If life was to be called normal, then hers was perfect. If life was hard, hers was good or maybe normal. Her family wasn't filthy rich. They also weren't a poor or suffering family. The Evergardens were just your everyday average family. Rich enough to manage a good life amd poor enough to still interact with the hardships of the world.
Evee was the youngest daughter. Having an older sister and two brothers. But one of her brothers died back when she was a teenager in high-school. Though she never knew the cause of death as the family kept it a secret. Possibly a family decision.
Evee went to a good primary school, good secondary school and she had no complaints about her high-school life or school.
When she got to college she practiced medicine. She had hoed she could be a doctor. Even if she worked in one of those low paying hospitals or health facilities, she could still sace lives. It wasn't a dream she wanted, but a necessity she felt her family needed. They never begged or forced her to do anything, but she wanted to give something back to them.
They gave her their all without wanting anything back from her. She wanted to show the result of her efforts. Something that will give her family recognition.
Evee still had a year left in her studies when a storm came for her family. It wasn't literally storm. But it still shook the family. Her grandmother got into an accident.
The doctors said a metal rod had pierced her through. The blood loss was too tremendous. Even though they managed to save her, it was doubtfull her body can ever fully heal. She was hospitalized for a few months.
Though it wasn't straining the family financially, it delivered a huge blow on them.
At some point, Evee found herself standing at the door of her ward. Or she would just visit her in the hospital and just stare at her sleeping body in bed, hoping she would just open her eyes. But it was just wishful thinking.
Her grandmother never opened her eyes.
Along the way, in time she would just wish she could push time. Somehow come to the end of her studieamd take care of her grandmother herself. But luch was just starting to drift from the Evergardens.
Time passed fast enough and it was just a few months before her graduation in no time. When she had already planned many ways to help her grandmother herself, she passed away.
Her body had grown too weak. It was something that was inevitable as her condition had already been explained amd said to be bad. But she couldn't accept it.
When Evee heard the news, her body froze in place. Her mind went blank for a few moments. Her world was turned upside-down in an instant and a single phone call. In simple, she shattered like a glass falling to the hard ground.
Evee felt her life and every bit of purpose it had fade from her very being. She couldn't directly blame herself as she didn't choose to be late to graduate. But she couldn't accept the fact that she wasn't given the chance to take of her.
The news devastating the family more, scarring them even deeper.
But one must not forget what was once said. 'When it rains it pours.' The Evergardens had their rain, but it had to pour. Evee's grandfather. The old man had a strike and was immediately hospitalized.
It felt like a black cloud loomed over the family. The darkness was never-ending. The family was stuck in a tunnel of nothing but pure despair. They were losing so much without rest, it was almost as if they are paying for their long blissful life.
The funeral was very dignified amd showed the great respect and admiration the family had towards their own. Blue and white tents for the service. A green carpet in the open space and organized chairs in an orderly manner. The family sat on one side amd the guests on the other.
The people who attended were few, but they were close to her, so it was still a good form after farewell in her name.
The family managed to move of after a rather long time from the shade of those dark days. In the present, they had finally gotten back up to their feet.
Evee layed in bed in her room when her sister came rushing happily. She could hear her footsteps getting closer until she burst into her room without even knocking.
"Marianne, don't you think you're all enough to have the simplest.plest manners of knocking before entering?" Evee mocked her for her behavior.
"Don't mind that. You always complain about it. Here have one of this." Her sister Marianne grabbed her hand and put a hard piece of paper in it.
"What is this? You know I have no interest in one of your products."
"It's not a product fool. It's an invitation. A ticket I to one of the most prestigious balls that take place annually. And guess what, it's happening right here in the city." Marianne said enthusiastically. Her face brimmed with happiness.
"Yeeeey. Such a nice thing. As if I would say that. Please get out of my room and go to your ball. I want to rest." Evee got up from her bed and kicked her out. Marianne was persistent as she still explained the details of the ball even when she stood outside the door.
Evee fell asleep and amd woke in a few hours. When she woke up her eyes fell on the ticket. After she bathed, after she had her meals. Even when she intended to sleep. It just mad her feel guilty.
"I really hope I won't regret this."
