Chapter 73: Chapter 73: A Traditional Showdown
"Hokage-sama, the man behind you... isn't he Uchiha Itachi, the rogue ninja from Konoha? He's clearly a member of the Akatsuki—what is he doing here?!"
"And what kind of deal do you have with the Akatsuki?!"
Kurotsuchi's massive frame shot up, slamming his hand onto the table with a loud bang.
Sensing the rising tension, the five individuals behind Tobirama grew solemn. Might Guy stepped forward, positioning himself protectively beside the Hokage, ready to defend at a moment's notice.
However, Tobirama merely raised his hand, his expression calm as he responded coolly:
"Itachi Uchiha is an undercover agent planted in the Akatsuki by Konoha. His mission was to gather intelligence on that dangerous organization. Now that his task is complete, of course, he has returned to the village."
"As for the head you brought before me, I can only say it doesn't belong to a Nara clan ninja. It was a disguise—who it truly was, I cannot disclose."
"The disappearance of the Five-Tails' jinchūriki has nothing to do with Konoha. The one you should be hunting is the Akatsuki."
Even if Tobirama explained the White Zetsu's unique disguise technique, they wouldn't believe him. Instead, they'd question how he knew of it.
The four Iwagakure ninja, especially Kurotsuchi, were barely able to contain their fury after hearing Tobirama's explanation.
"What nonsense is this?! That man used the Nara clan's shadow techniques—how could he not be one of yours?!"
"Hokage, if Konoha refuses to return the jinchūriki, we'll settle this on the battlefield!"
The four Iwagakure shinobi rose, their haughty demeanor evident as they made their declaration to Tobirama.
"What fools," Tobirama thought coldly. "Used as pawns and yet completely unaware."
The Akatsuki intended to manipulate Iwagakure into clashing with Konoha?
"Then let's see you try." Tobirama's head tilted slightly, his gaze steady. Whatever schemes lay behind this, he would face them head-on.
He was well aware that the other three Great Villages would never allow Konoha to grow unchecked. Even if Konoha refrained from collecting more tailed beasts, a major war was inevitable.
Did they intend to swoop in after Konoha and its adversaries had exhausted one another, claiming the tailed beasts for themselves? Tobirama smirked inwardly. They were welcome to try.
If Iwagakure wished for war, he would oblige—he would crush them so thoroughly that no other village would dare to challenge Konoha again. By then, even if Tobirama did capture all the tailed beasts, none would dare to speak against him.
Still, he needed to remain vigilant. Would the Akatsuki exploit the chaos of war to make their move?
With Madara Uchiha's body in Black Zetsu's possession and Orochimaru now working with the Akatsuki, the possibility of Madara's resurrection loomed. Tobirama couldn't dismiss the threat.
This war might just be the opportunity to draw out the Akatsuki from the shadows.
"Fine! Hokage, we'll meet you on the battlefield! Let's go!" Kurotsuchi glared at Tobirama one last time before turning to leave with a sweeping gesture.
"Who said you could leave?"
Tobirama's icy voice froze them in place.
By now, even Shikaku Nara didn't bother intervening. He understood that the moment the falsified Konoha head was presented, this confrontation had become unavoidable.
The instant Tobirama spoke, Might Guy sprang into action.
These audacious fools—blaming Konoha for the loss of their jinchūriki and demanding its return—Guy had been itching to teach them a lesson.
"Leaf Hurricane!"
Guy's whirlwind kick struck Kurotsuchi squarely in the back, sending the burly ninja flying a dozen meters.
"Hokage! You—!"
An Iwagakure ninja turned, furious, only to meet the three tomoe spinning in Itachi Uchiha's Sharingan.
"Demonic Illusion: Shackling Stakes Technique!"
The ninja froze as their consciousness was dragged into a nightmarish illusion.
Meanwhile, the remaining three attempted to flee in separate directions.
Unfortunately for them, the Konoha shinobi present—Kakashi Hatake, Itachi Uchiha, Jiraiya, and Might Guy—were all renowned powerhouses.
Within moments, the escaping Iwagakure shinobi were subdued and brought back, incapacitated.
"You... You'll pay for this! My father won't let Konoha get away with—" Kurotsuchi snarled through gritted teeth, glaring at Tobirama from the ground.
"Great-Uncle, are you sure about this?" Jiraiya hesitated, breaking the tense silence.
"Who's your Great-Uncle?" Tobirama shot him a sharp look before continuing coldly.
"When Ōnoki saw that fabricated head, he was convinced of Konoha's guilt. This war was inevitable."
"Iwagakure has been manipulated, but from the moment I decided to gather all the tailed beasts, these battles became unavoidable. This is merely happening sooner than expected."
Tobirama's explanation was curt and direct.
"Kakashi, take these four to Konoha's prison. Make sure their chakra is sealed."
"Understood." Kakashi signaled for several ANBU operatives to haul the defeated Iwagakure shinobi away.
"Now," Tobirama announced, leaning on the table, "prepare for war—and remain vigilant for any moves by the Akatsuki."
He turned to Itachi. "You will brief everyone here on the Akatsuki's structure and operations."
"Yes, Hokage."
Itachi began recounting everything he knew about the Akatsuki from his years undercover, providing details about its members, their abilities, and their mysterious leader.
"Wait," Jiraiya interjected, his expression serious. "You said the leader has the Rinnegan?"
Itachi nodded. "Yes, and not just one person—there are six of them, all possessing the Rinnegan. Their abilities include absorbing ninjutsu and manipulating gravity and repulsion."
Jiraiya's heart sank. Could it be? Is Nagato still alive?
Though he had mourned his three disciples, Jiraiya had always wondered about Nagato's fate. Now, it seemed possible that his former student not only survived but had become the leader of a dangerous rogue ninja organization.
"Enough speculation," Tobirama interrupted sharply. "We have Akatsuki intel and an impending war with Iwagakure. Prepare yourselves accordingly!"
As his commanding tone silenced the room, a mechanical voice echoed in Tobirama's mind—a system notification, one he hadn't heard in years.
