Chapter 5: New Body, World, family, New Understandings
The body I was born into...
A baby...
Looking at himself in the mirror, he has black hair and bright silver eyes.
Well that's new
It's been 9 months of being born into this body.
I am still unable to walk on my own but I could still crawl.
What a pain...
Yoru was still his name, how strange that is! Crawling out of the bedroom, he called out - cried or made whatever noises a baby makes - to the few maids in the humble and small household.
"Ah! Young master, it is dangerous!"
Oh it's her.
Violet, a woman in her late twenties. From what Yoru was able to find out was that she was an ex warrior or adventurer.
' she is devoted to my father who also used to be an adventurer as well. '
She owed him her life of devotion and loyalty, despite his father's reluctance she still followed him around and this is now her position.
What a devoted lady...
Violet walked up the stairs, grabbed Yoru's body and brought him to the living room.
Blonde hair, with a fragrant smell. A perfect body, with good facial features, smart and kind. She is indeed, a woman that every man would want.
"Here you go, young master. Please refrain from doing dangerous things, okay?"
She sat him down by the living room couch and then left to do her other duties.
Mother and father still isn't home yet so he had all the time in the world, crawling to one of the small shelves, the ones that he could reach, he took out a book and opened the pages.
' damn, I still can't read. '
The pages showed unfamiliar letters and runes that one could see in video games or fantasy movies, but those are just for show. This one however, was the real deal.
His first few months as a baby were hard, he couldn't understand a thing his mother or father said, couldn't even read the signs to.
Like being an actual baby, ugh...
No familiar earth words or letters. Is he actually going to live in this world by learning a new language?
Well the next few months after that he could atleast now, make out what they were saying even if it's all vague. His problem is, that he can't read well.
Looking out of the window, he gazes at the landscape.
They were inside a city, like those from fantasy shows as usual.
They had greenery atleast so that's new! Their house was situated on top of a small road so he had a good view of what's below.
The streets were bustling with people, the shops were just starting to open and then far away is the academy, a school for learning magic, how to survive, use swords and all the other things that schools teach.
I should be fine right? I already passed college so I should be good.
Sadly the future would not be good for him at all!
***
After what felt like eternity.
All those studying and learning.
He was finally able to understand the language the locals spoke!
By the time he was finished though, he was passed the age he could walk.
Finally some mobility
He thought to himself.
Both mother and father were ecstatic to watch as he took his first baby steps, even the maids were sobbing their eyes out.
He then was finally able to talk, even if it was just simple and small words and that he can't speak full sentences... Yet!
He was able to convey things better!
Then when he became ten years old, he was allowed to play outside with the other neighborhood children.
Yoru was not interested at all!
Not because of the children, but because of the wandering spirits on the streets.
He was obviously used to seeing ghosts through out his whole life back when he was still in his original body, but for now, he wanted to take a break from all of those things.
It's not everyday someone gets to relive their life in a new world, I want to see where things go and how my life will be.
Yoru spends his time indoors, reading books and...
Still reading books.
He had a thing for writing and cooking, which surprised the younger maids who also work attend to the mother, father, and him.
Seeing a ten year old child cook with extravagant skill was obviously, a shocker!
Though there were some accidents.
One time he almost cut himself while handling to cut some vegetables with their made violet.
And the time he was washing dishes and almost fell into the sink.
Good times!
Two years have now passed.
And he's twelve.
He's fluent in speaking the language of this world and he can proficiently read and write the runes.
He was also at the age to attend a simple school to get used to things, and he took this as a sign to get some knowledge about the world.
Apparently they refer to their currently location as the Western Grid, just beside the main Inner Grid.
The region he was in is the apparently home to all the people who this world calls, Systemless.
Listening to the teacher explain a few things. He could already guess or figure things out, or atleast make out an understanding of what this System is.
' so it's basically just like video games, those that don't have this System are called Systemless, or so to get stronger you have to build up your Soul. Both have their pros and cons, but System or Initiated - what they call those who have System - have it easy, since they get life essence of experience when killing monsters, accomplishing quests. Systemless, instead, have to rank up by long processes they also have Class as well so for the Initiated, the System gives their Class and Rank for them. For people like myself, I get my Rank through a long period of whatever training, and my Class using what is apparently a machine and a magic orb that identifies your Class... '
What an absolute pain!
RING RING RING RING
"Alright everyone, class is over!"
The teacher finally dismissed everyone, and everyone packs their stuff and is heading out of class.
Yoru took his time and glanced at the teacher, keeping his form at the periphery of his vision, so not exactly looking at him directly.
The teacher was a man in his thirties, nothing too extravagant, his main focus was a spirit clutching around his neck.
The spirit had long hair and, of course, a ghostly body. It had a a tunic, and a comfortable looking headband on her, more importantly she had a necklace with one half of a heart around her.
The teacher also had the same one, they connected to each other so it appears they had some connection.
Walking out of the class, Yoru heard the weeping ghost cry out:
[Oh my love... Please keep looking for new love, I was only a mistress to you wasn't I?]
The ghost sobbed as it wrapped tighter around the teachers neck.
The teacher was indifferent, only feeling as though it was hard to breath.
This is none of my business, I'll just leave.
Yoru thought to himself, but how would his grandma react to such a thing?
Shamans don't always try to be involved with spirits, only through circumstances will they interfere.
[Forget about me, please. I can't see you suffering like this!]
Sigh...
' grandma would have helped, wouldn't she?'
He sighed and walked off.
Yoru plans to help the ghost...
"But not now... The weapon choosing ceremony is coming soon, and I need to prepare myself."
The weapon choosing ceremony. A tradition here in the Western Grid, a family who let's their child participate at twelve years of age, they will pick a weapon of their choice.
Those who are Systemless, they don't have the knowledge to know what weapon they will be good at. Some parents who raise their child with the sword, only to find out that their Soul is compatible with the spear.
Or when someone spends their life training to become a swordsman, building their strength and dexterity, only to find out they were meant to be a mage.
Yoru stepped onto the cool streets, the bustling of vendors and the horses and carriages.
The Western Grid, or this part of it, doesn't have a lot of technology. The more prestigious people of this city live on the other side, but for those like me, going to the academy is a must.
Now back to the topic.
"From what I heard from my mother and father, and surprisingly from our maid Violet. They will use some machine or a supernatural magic that can peer into someones Core. They will feel a tide of either warm or cold feelings when it happens, when you open your eyes after it's done your weapon of choice will appear. "
He sighed and walked towards library, the lady their gave him a nod and a smile, already used to the young man coming by.
He sat down somewhere far and quiet and thought more.
"In my honest opinion they should have just done the weapon choosing ceremony at a young age. Families made sure that their child gets enough training before that, if one of their people is a mage, they will give them someone who is also a mage, or a swordmage for that matter. Then they'll train their child to wield both sword and wand so they will have the class they trained their life for, what a fine strategy."
Yaawnnn...
Both of Yoru's parents are strong adventures.
His mother, Althea Vaylith.
She was of average height for every other woman, beautiful, wavey, blonde hair and a kind and carefree attitude that's easy to mistake her as an airhead. A slender figure who has a bright innocent smile, weilded a beautiful white staff made of pristine wood, wore light armor and a simple gray tunic underneath.
She was a both a healer and a long range mage, she was both an angel of life and death. She had proficient levels of healing, to the point she could restore lost flesh, sadly that was as far as she could go but it was B Tier¹ Healing, or somewhere in
Middle-High² healing.
As for her combat skills as a mage, it wasn't too extravagant at all!
"I've asked father about her and all he said after a long time of thinking was that she didn't use any flashy spells. She had high amounts of mana capacity and had the intelligence - despite her always seeming like an airhead and care free, is what father said - to pull off powerful spells."
Picking up another book and then heading to the lady in charge...
He gave the books he chose to the lady to get it stamped. After that, he then walked back out the library, looked at the sky and felt his stomach grumble.
I'll think about it while I walk to a diner...
Sigh~
***
Underestimating how much thinking can do to make you hungry, he couldn't even think at all while walking to the diner.
This diner was popular the kids do there were mainly kids my age or around their teens in here.
Weird thoughts... I'm a full grown adult in a room filled with kids, totally not weird...
Yoru ordered some food and sat down somewhere far and dug in.
He wanted to devour the food but he was raised with etiquette, both by his grandma and his current father and mother.
Gulp.
Gulp.
Gulp.
Gulp.
After a few bites to satiate a small bit of his hunger, he wiped his mouth with a handkerchief and then sipped some tea.
Some few kids looked at him with a funny gaze.
What's a kid doing drinking tea?
He must be so poor he can't afford to drink these sweet treats!
How pitiful...
Is what they were probably and definitely thinking.
Kids that are rich sure are unhealthy!
Clunk.
After sipping his tea and setting it down, he took out one of his books and started reading while trying to remember where he left off.
' ah right.'
He inhaled for a few moments and then thought once more.
' In my honest opinion. Mother probably didn't use any flashy spells because they cost tons of mana, and take a huge toll on your body, plus, she needed endurance and the mana to be a healer. Is that why she only used basic attack and defend magic? Probably. From what I found out when I snooped around, whenever she did get into combat is that she would always take distance and use long spells that are meant to be long range and take a about five seconds to cast out. '
Her mother was apparently very agile, flexible, and adaptable for a combat healer mage.
Recalling his father's words when he would ask about their time as adventurers:
"Before your mother and I found each other in the same group, she was said to be the angel of their unit! People called her a coward for running away and not fighting head on, I for one, find it admirable. She's a combat healer so it would be obvious she would take her distance right? But people judged that she was a coward because she had enough mana to fight them, yet she still chose to run. Cowardice they said..."
"... That's why I put your mother in be—"
Cough! Cough!
He thought too much.
Sipping more of his tea, he then thought about his father's background.
His father, Caelus Veylar.
Long white hair that he always ties into a pony tail, if it were cut short he would tie it like a rat tail. Tall, atleast six foot two, the body of an average runner and maybe even calisthenic workout - if that even is a thing here- . He had a fierce smile and always weilded two curved blades, he was easy to mistake as a battle frenzied idiot who only knows fighting.
He was a Sword Mage, his strength lies in his powerful and swift strikes and his lightning fast speed. He was known as Silent Flash, while he didn't get his Title from challenging Domains and Rifts, people found it fitting for a man like him.
' indeed it was very fitting... '
Taking out another book, he turned it to a page where the reason for his father's nickname to be so fitting. Or atleast where it was inspired by...
A book of sickness and illnesses, also where cures for it reside. There are even herbs and other spells to learn to heal or cure, like [Detoxify] or spells to check if you've been poisoned or affected by something venomous like [Check Up].
' what a funny name for a spell. '
These things are what he did not get this book for.
The reason Yoru got this book was because of his father's illness.
Turning the books pages a few times, he then landed on the topic he wanted to see and know about.
[Mana Leak] Effects: "Causes a person to infinitely leak mana, magical energy, or life essence"
[Mana Leak] Cause: " There are no confirmed causes for this defect or illness, it was only suspected to be because of parents low capacity of mana, magical energy, or life essence. It is not confirmed."
Yoru then brought his eyes down to the last part of the whole description of [Mana Leak].
The cure...
[Mana Leak] Cure: "There is none."
One of the few flaws that would break anyone's hope of becoming a mage.
A mage required, Mana, Magical energy...
Their life essence...
To cast a spell, one would need these things for it to happen.
What would happen if someone infinitely leaked out their entire purpose without their control?
They would be deemed worthless by ones whole family... A disgrace.
Yet how did Caelus Veylar become an A tier swordmage?
"Either by luck or coincidence... Unlike my mother, who was born into an average family, father actually hailed from a family filled with swordsmen who fought with swords and shields. Magic was then put together so they become swordmage's as well, he had extremely high affinity to thunder, storm, lightning, and the sea."
A master swordmage despite having a drawback of [Mana Leak] he still grew stronger than the people of his clan, going as far as to even get his own clan, teaching those with similar illnesses and helping them adapt.
How did he adapt anyway?
He then recalled his mother's words, asking about how he fought:
"Your father huh? Well back then, I didn't really pay lots of attention to gossips so I never heard of him! When I saw him for the first time, he was so easy to mistake as some knucklehead who only knows brawn and no brain. Sigh... I was heavily mistaken of course. When I found out he had
[Mana Leak], I offered to give him a potion to lessen the burden for him. Without even knowing he was a higher tier than me!"
" When I was him fight, he was spectacular! Not a lot of people can follow the flow of someone's Mana, and Life Essence, but I could of course! He was agile and adaptable, using two blades at once, his mana flowed out of him then turned into his main fighting force repelling him and boosting his speed and strength. He was precise with it too, I could tell how much training he went through to control his flow so precisely..."
" A main reason he was good in be—"
Cough!
Cough!
Thought too much again...
He got more stares from a few more kids wondering what the hell he was doing.
He finished his food first and then paid for his meal, then he left the diner with the books in hand.
Walking around the streets once more, he continued thinking...
"So my father used his weakness as his strength? What a formidable enemy he would be to other adventurers."
He couldn't help but admire his father.
[Mana Leak] Effects: "Causes a person to infinitely leak mana, magical energy, or life essence"
The keyword here is infinitely.
Someone with this rare illness would have their mana capacity drained to the lowest of the low, if it were put in percentages, it would probably be in 10% to 30%.
"It was never stated to empty your entire reserve, or else you'd be dead..."
Mana can be like Life Essence, and both serves as similarly like Magical Energy. The three have differences but similarities, so people would normally just choose one or the other to not confuse themselves.
I do it to so I can't say I'm different.
His father's main abilities were about speed, speed, and speed. His precision was all skill and training, his strength was his momentum. An ability that is related to thunder, storm, lightning, and the sea's...
"Spells like [Flash], [Blitz], [Charge] or [Super Charge] works for him, these four consume less of his infinitely draining reserves. Then there are [Discharge], [Hundred Meter Step] and probably more that consume a lot..."
The spell his father used in his younger days were [Flash] and [Charge].
I should talk to my parents friends more... They've got interesting story's to tell when they're drunk.
[Flash], just by its name, it's a magic to quick go from one place to another. For an average mage/ swordmage, they could use this up to two and three times before they start to feel nauseous.
"Those who trained from a my father's clan, they could use [Flash] up to three to seven times. Their highest was ten to eleven..."
Was...
By the time his father was finished training, the record was at twelve.
Caelus Veylar returned to his clan and requested a duel with the highest record breaker. He was only at the age of nineteen, and he would be fighting a clan elder who was already passed his prime, yet still able to set a record for [Flash].
Pfft!
He mentally laughed, he turned a corner and looked up at his home on an upward slope on the road.
He continued walking.
His admiration for his parents were already high, but we're now even higher.
"Long story short, he beat the record breaker by copying the spell he was using, how amusing. In the end he won, broke the record with 99 [Flash] spell used. It probably reached a hundred but he already won!"
It was thanks to his other skill of course.
[Charge] is an ability that allowed someone to temporarily use their Life Essence to regain lost Mana, and at a much potent version.
He went passed the 30% capacity of
[Mana Leak] and he was able to use [Flash] five to ten times in a row, by the time he reached fifty uses, he already adapted and was able to accurately use his long training of manipulating his Mana's flow to be deadly precise.
"Such wonderful parents!"
He exclaimed to himself.
***
"Ah! Welcome back Yoru~!"
His mother paused her cooking, leaving the fire open.
Violet stepped in with a sigh and resumed her cooking for her.
Squeeze....
Hugging him tightly, she smiled brightly, indeed just like an angel.
"How was school?? Did you learn lots and lots???"
"Yes... I have... Air..."
"Whoops!"
She let go of Yoru, watching him take a few deep breaths still looking calm as he had always been.
"Where is father?"
"He went off hunting, he'll be back by dinner!"
She said proudly with blinding sparkles in her eyes.
How come she acts more like a kid than the kids in my school?
Violet put the steaming pot out of the burning stove and grabbed Althea by her shoulders, and then pulled her away.
"Now, now. Young master must take his bath and rest, my lady, please stay put."
His mother pouted and obediently stayed on the couch like a kid who was put on time out.
Turning to Yoru, she snapped her fingers and the two other maids came.
One grabbed his stuff and dashed upstairs to his room, and the other dashed to the bath.
"Rest now, young master. The bath will be ready soon."
She studied his emotionless poker face which is not normal for a child but she did not seem to care.
She lingered for a few moments and smiled:
"The Awakening Ceremony is only a month from now, you needn't be so worried and act with haste."
Hit the bullseye!
He smiled lightly and nodded.
' she's wayy to good at her job.'
The Awakening Ceremony was indeed only a month from now. He was born in March, and the Awakening Ceremony was in February.
It is the second week of January, so some who didn't get to catch up wanted to train and ready themselves before that.
' she's right... I needn't be so hasty.'
