The moment Sato touched the gemstone starfish hair clip, a cold mechanical voice echoed in his mind:
[Ding!]
[Energy detected. Absorb energy? Energy is rapidly dissipating. Host is advised to absorb immediately.]
Sato suppressed his shock, quickly composed his expression, and glanced around. Aside from Elsa and the three men in diving suits, there was indeed no one else nearby.
He then looked at the gemstone starfish hair clip in his hand—or more precisely, at the cracked sapphire embedded in its center. His body felt an overwhelming desire for it.
The cold mechanical voice continued to repeat in his mind:
[Energy is rapidly dissipating. Host is advised to absorb immediately.]
Sato suspected that the voice was coming from the unknown system within his body. When he mentally uttered the word "absorb," his suspicion was confirmed, and the subsequent information left him momentarily stunned.
[Ding!]
[Absorbing energy. Absorption complete. System energy restored by 3%.]
[Current system energy: 7%]
[Energy level is above 5% - System detection capabilities are further unlocked.]
[Task bar functionality restored.]
_______
[Ding!]
[Energy identified: Kyogre's Power.]
________
[Ding!]
[Main Quest: Become the strongest Pokémon Trainer in the Pokémon world.]
[Requirements: Defeat the Elite Four & Champions of all regions.]
[Current progress: 0%.]
[Deadline: 10 years.]
[Remaining time: 9 years, 11 months, and 7 days.]
[Reward: Qualification for reincarnation.]
[Penalty for failure: Forget about any further reincarnation.]
(Note: Here, the penalty was 'Soul Obliteration', but we all hate that type of stuff so I took the liberty to phrase it in a much subtle manner, which doesn't make it sound as horrible; even though it might mean the same thing.)
__________
[Ding!]
[Active Side Quest: Sophia's Mission.]
[Task: Achieve a 10-win streak in the LaRousse City Battle Tower.]
[Deadline: 1 month.]
[Remaining time: 15 days.]
[Probable Penalty for failure: Pokémon confiscation + Demotion]
(Note: Again, I changed some stuff. Here, probable penalty means something that could happen, not something that will happen for sure.)
_____________
[Ding!]
[System energy insufficient.]
[System store cannot be accessed. Host is advised to locate additional absorbable energy as soon as possible.]
_____________
The system seemed ravenous for energy.
The moment Sato mentally agreed to absorb it, the system extracted all the dissipating energy from the cracked sapphire in less than a second. The cascade of information that followed appeared before his eyes.
"So, the system in my body was this useless because it was low on energy? It couldn't even unlock basic functions. But this new task bar… I could do without that. And this main quest—defeat every region's Elite Four & Champion in ten years? Isn't that a bit much?"
Sato stared at the information in a daze, bitterness creeping into his thoughts. Honestly speaking, he had no immediate desire for "reincarnation eligibility," as he was living just fine in this world.
But, thinking that 'no further reincarnation' could very well be translated as- a possibility of having his soul obliterated - sent a chill down his spine.
Those words, so simple, yet so brutal, felt like a Damocles' sword hanging over him, increasing his urgency to grow stronger.
As for the side quest, it was even more frustrating. Sato had no idea who Sophia was, and the lack of any specified reward for success seemed utterly unfair.
Still, he guessed that if one got to enjoy certain privileges and benefits, it was only fair that they had to pay the corresponding price as well.
Just the system's presence in itself was the biggest benefit of them all.
However, this wasn't the time to delve deeply into the new changes in the system or the information it provided. A grieving woman stood beside him—a beautiful woman at that— crying her heart out.
She needed someone to comfort her.
Thinking about how Milotic had sacrificed itself to protect them, any joy Sato felt from the system's changes vanished instantly, replaced by a profound sadness.
"Don't cry anymore, Elsa. Milotic is gone now. It sacrificed itself to protect us. I'm heartbroken too, but what's lost is lost. Think about what you still have. AJ and the others are still waiting for you to return safely. Here—this fell from Milotic's mouth. It must be something important to you."
Elsa had been drowning in her grief, her red, swollen eyes filled with sorrow. Fearing she might do something rash, Sato stepped forward to comfort her and returned the gemstone starfish hair clip to her.
Based on the system's information, Sato was now certain why Milotic had unleashed such an overwhelming power earlier.
It had drawn on Kyogre's power within the sapphire of the hair clip.
However, using the power of the Sea's Sovereign, without the ability to bear it, came at a heavy cost, and Milotic had paid the ultimate price.
"Thank you. I'd like to be alone for a while," Elsa said softly, her voice tinged with lingering sobs as she took the hair clip from Sato.
When he mentioned AJ and the others, her body trembled slightly, and her crying gradually subsided. She then used a Friend Ball to retrieve Milotic.
"All right, I'll give you some space. I'll stay nearby. Call me if you need anything."
Sato nodded understandingly and stepped back. He let Marshtomp drag the three diving-suit men away with him to give Elsa her solitude.
Although he was her savior, they had only just met. For now, he wasn't in a position to console her deeply.
"Mercy, brother! Please spare me! I swear I won't dare do it again!"
"Yeah, we were wrong! Have mercy! You can have all the Water Stones here. We don't want them!"
"We didn't realize we were offending someone so strong! Please, young hero, let us live! I'll give you all my valuables!"
As Sato walked away with Marshtomp and Growlithe, the three diving-suit men cried and begged him for mercy, their voices filled with desperation.
However, Sato's expression remained cold and unyielding. He made no effort to hide the intense killing intent in his eyes.
For these scum who had tried to kill him and caused Milotic's death, there was no room for forgiveness.
He stripped the three men of all their valuables, then ordered Marshtomp to dig a large pit.
Without hesitation, he threw the three men into it and then personally buried them alive, their desperate screams silenced by the layers of dirt.
To ensure they wouldn't escape, Sato had Marshtomp, with its incredible strength, repeatedly use Ice Punch on the filled pit, reinforcing the soil and turning it into frozen ground.
After dealing with the three men, Sato began exploring the mysterious cave with Marshtomp and Growlithe by his side.
