Chapter 746: Chapter 725 ( Confusion )
"Why do I feel like there's something strange about all this?" - Said a demonic soldier as he and his colleagues marched towards the huge city in front of them.
"I don't know, but it's strange that we haven't received any attacks so far" - replied another soldier.
They had been marching for over half an hour without a break after Cattleya, the demon queen, took control of the army in order to conquer the city of Verbergen.
"There are silhouettes up ahead!" - A soldier exclaimed.
The other demon warriors quickly stood on guard, though they looked with annoyance at the shouting soldier, when they realized that the silhouettes were nothing more than inert mannequins.
"Dummies?" - Said one general as he frowned as he reached the site of the commotion - "I want a group to check the area in case there are traps."
The chosen soldiers quickly scattered around the area as they walked carefully to prevent accidents, though after a few minutes they discovered nothing unusual, so they returned with the news.
The general frowned, before sending one of his subordinates to explain the situation to the demon queen.
The other generals also seemed confused because Verbergen's army seemed to have disappeared without a trace after having fought a heated battle.
"Advance without fear, we are the army of the demon realm, we need not fear" - Catleya said as she frowned at how cautious her subordinates were being, though it wasn't as if she could blame them, after all, they had lost much of their military power during their war against the humans for not being cautious enough. They were learning from their mistakes, which was good, though not in this situation when they were assured of victory.
"Hai!" - The demon soldiers exclaimed as they marched steadily.
Cattleya nodded before stepping down from her throne and walking towards the city with the soldiers.
"My queen, this is not a good idea, there might be a trap" - said a general with a frown.
"Easy, I don't feel the presence of any mana source in this place, that means there is no ambush nearby" - replied Cattleya with boredom - "Let's go".
"Ok" - nodded the general as he let out a sigh.
The demons entered Verbergen after a few minutes of marching, though to their surprise and confusion, they found nothing.
Cattleya looked at the surroundings with a frown as she started to think - "I want you to keep an eye on the surroundings, we have taken the city, but that there are no defenses, is a bit worrying."
"You want me to send a recon squad?" - The general asked.
"Yes, I want it to be quick while I'm in the main building" - said Cattleya as she walked towards the place where the leader of the elf clan supposedly lived. This information they gathered with utmost ease thanks to their spies.
The demon woman walked silently as she saw the intact structure before entering and checking what was around - "It's beautiful... and it's completely mine."
"Indeed" - said an elderly voice.
"Your Excellency?" - Cattleya asked in surprise as she watched the high priest enter right behind her - "Is something wrong?"
"No, it's just that I'm surprised, the war didn't go as we expected, but the results are favorable" - said the high priest as he shook his head.
"That proves that we just needed the right incentive to realize our plans" - replied Cattleya as she walked towards the main hall, the place where the meeting room of Verbergen's high command was located. She quickly called her servants to remove everything unnecessary before setting up her throne - "This place is perfect, full of life and without the need to constantly live in fear of a wave of monsters attacking our settlements."
"You have a point, in this place we will be able to improve our race and slowly spread out" - nodded the high priest as he set his mind.
Cattleya felt a bad feeling, though her expression remained serene.
"I can hear your heart pounding, my queen" - said the high priest as he gave a fatherly smile to the demon woman - "Are you thinking something strange?"
"What are you talking about?" - Cattleya asked with a frown, though her expression changed to one of terror when she felt how the room seemed to have been affected by a temporary spell - "What are you doing!"
"I must admit, I didn't think you hid your intentions so well, Cattleya" - said the high priest as he snapped his fingers.
Cattleya quickly tried to release her mana, but to her terror, she saw a white silhouette surround her body and cancel her magical control - "!"
"From the very beginning you played with us, and without us noticing, everything was going as you planned" - the high priest continued as he looked coldly at the paralyzed woman - "Giving you secret information to our enemies, eliminating our valiant pawns, and finally helping you ascend to the throne.... I have to admit, you did a fine job as a spy."
Cattleya's face paled when she heard this, as she thought about how it was possible that she had been found out when she had been discreet with her every move.
"I suppose you're confused, and I would be too in this situation" - mused the old high priest as he shook his head - "The truth is that I discovered it by mere coincidence."
"H-How?" - Cattleya asked with difficulty because the white silhouette seemed to be absorbing her mana.
"It was during our last meeting, I accidentally dropped the egg of one of my spy bugs" - replied the high priest as he extended one of his fingers. The demon queen watched in terror as a small insect flew out of her clothes and landed on the old man's finger - "As you can see, I managed to put a spy bug next to you without both of us noticing, that's why it went so unnoticed."
". . ." - Cattleya was silent as she bit her lip, after all, she didn't expect the reason for her discovery to be one as stupid as a simple coincidence.
"Anyway, back to the main topic, I want to know a few things about you, Cattleya" - said the high priest as he narrowed his eyes - "Since when have you been a spy? Perhaps since our war with the humans, or maybe much earlier?"
Cattleya was silent, though she quickly let out a cry of pain.
"I'm asking you a question..." - growled the high priest as he watched the demon woman writhe in pain - "Why won't you answer me?"
"I-I can't..." - Cattleya replied haltingly, though she quickly began to scream again.
The high priest was silent for a few seconds before snapping his fingers.
Cattleya fell to the ground as she felt her body go into small spasms.
"Can't you?" - repeated the high priest as he frowned - "Why?"
"Contract..." - Cattleya replied with difficulty - "I-I can't speak for a contract."
"I see..." - muttered the high priest as he walked over to the woman and lifted her by the hair - "That was how you got such great power, through the contract, though I'm surprised that the person who turned you into a spy was so strong, after all, the power gained from a contract is relative to the potential of its two parties, and being honest, your potential is garbage, you only serve as a breeding machine."
Cattleya gritted her teeth as she raised her hand to try to cast a spell, too bad the high priest stomped on her hand hard, making a loud sound of something breaking.
"Ah!" - Cattleya let out a sharp cry of pain as she hadn't expected the old man to be so strong.
"Surprised? You shouldn't be, after all, I am the greatest servant of our lord, Alba" - said the high priest while laughing madly - "I am so strong that I could kill you with just one hand, but I haven't because there are so many things I need to know, although seeing that the contract prevents you from talking, I guess I'll have to do something different..."
"N-No... I don't want to die..." - Cattleya said as she struggled to get up.
The high priest snorted in disdain before kicking the woman, who went flying into one of the walls, bouncing off and falling back to the ground.
"Ugh" - Cattleya let out another groan of pain as she felt everything around her seem to start going dark.
"No, you still can't sleep" - the high priest said as he used some of his magic to stabilize the woman's situation.
"K-kill me..." - Cattleya muttered with difficulty, seeing how her captor didn't seem to want to give her some time to rest.
"Oh, I'll kill you, though it's still too soon" - the high priest replied while narrowing his eyes - "After all, it's a pity that someone with your level of power would be wasted, even Alba-sama thinks the same..."
"W-what are you planning to do with me..." - Cattleya muttered as she looked up, though her expression changed when she saw a strange white silhouette appear in front of her. The demon queen could not see the features of this silhouette, but from its shape it appeared to be a woman.
"It's simple, I'll have my colleague ask your soul directly" - smiled the high priest as he watched the white silhouette enter the demon woman's body from her mouth.
