Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Vanessa; Alia
New York, the core of the New York metropolitan area, is currently the largest city in the United States. To distinguish it from the state of New York, the world refers to it as New York City.
Located on the northeastern coast of the United States, it is the most populous city in the country, and it's a highly diverse, multi-ethnic urban center. On this 789 square kilometers of land, immigrants from 97 countries and regions reside, speaking over 800 languages. Stepping into New York, one could easily lose track of whether they're still in the United States.
In short, New York is a true metropolis!
"New York is still as vast as ever!"
Looking at the familiar city, Alex couldn't help but sigh with a sense of meaningless nostalgia.
However, his "vast" didn't refer to New York's population or its multicultural makeup. Instead, he was referring to something more remarkable: the highest concentration of superheroes in any city in the world!
According to the Punisher, there were reportedly thousands of superheroes living in New York, and that number would multiply if you added in the deeper-hidden supervillains!
A staggering number indeed!!!
At this moment, Alex was sitting on a speeding bus, gazing through the left window at the city he hadn't seen for months, watching the vehicles pass by.
After his conversation with Charles, most of the mutants he had rescued from the ship chose to follow Charles and live at the X Academy he had yet to establish.
Wolverine, it seemed, had reconciled with his lover "Silver Fox" Kara, and after growing weary of fighting, he chose to live in seclusion. He and Kara, along with her sister Diamond, rejected Charles' offer to join the academy.
Upon reaching the nearby coast, Wolverine and his companions bid farewell to Alex, and despite several mutants' reluctance, they walked further and further away...
After Wolverine left, Alex understood where Charles and the others were headed—New York.
The X Academy that Charles spoke of was located in New York!
Since Alex was also residing in New York, even though he had no intention of joining Charles and the others, he decided to take the boat and head to the New York port.
After parting ways with Charles at the port, Alex took a bus to Queens.
"I left alone, but now I'm coming back with an extra one!"
Thinking this, Alex couldn't help but sigh deeply, then turned to look at the excited young girl sitting beside him, eagerly gazing out the window—a cute, blonde, little girl!
Her golden ponytails were tied on both sides, and the long braids hanging down to her knees swayed with every little movement of her head. She looked about eleven or twelve years old, her appearance full of cheer.
But more importantly, she was the very same little girl Alex had rescued in the alley!
Her appearance took Alex completely by surprise!
Thanks to Charles' explanation, he now understood how she ended up on the ship with them.
It turned out that while Alex had gone after the white man, she had been following him from behind. However, her speed couldn't catch up with either Alex or the white man driving ahead. She had only managed to keep a distance because of her innate abilities. When they reached the coast, she was at a loss in front of the vast ocean!
Coincidentally, Charles was passing by and, upon discovering she was a mutant and her goal was a secluded island in the sea, he kindly invited her aboard. Perhaps due to Charles' natural charm, the little girl had no hesitation and boarded the ship. Ultimately, she met Alex, who had boarded with Wolverine.
At first, Alex was surprised and pleased to see her. He was surprised because he had no idea how she ended up here, and pleased because she had finally met fellow mutants, so she wouldn't be alone anymore.
However, this feeling didn't last long before it was replaced by a deep bitterness—this girl showed no interest in joining Charles' X Academy, but insisted on following Alex. It would've been one thing if it had been any other girl, but when it was a little loli, Alex just didn't know how to handle it.
He wasn't into lolis!
Thus, Alex began persuading her to reconsider, but it was all in vain. Jean and Charles both joined in to help persuade the girl at Alex's request, but it had no effect. The little girl was stubborn and had set her mind on following Alex. Although she didn't cry or make a fuss, she remained determined.
In the end, the kind-hearted Charles, seeing the girl's unyielding will, gave up on trying to persuade her and turned to Alex, forcing him to make the decision to take her with him.
Alex had no choice but to let her stay with him, given how firm the girl's resolve was. After all, he couldn't just leave her to wander alone!
Sigh, Alex thought, "I guess I'm adopting a child now."
With another long sigh, Alex turned his gaze to the window. "It's only been two or three months since I left here, and New York has already changed so much!"
New York City, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. With the growing population, New York's economy and status have also risen in importance. Thanks to both the U.S. government and wealthy businessmen, New York's development has been remarkably fast, and "ever-changing" is no exaggeration when describing it.
Throughout the journey, Alex saw many new or under-construction buildings and public facilities. There were more vehicles on the streets than before.
"Brother, is this New York? Is this the big city?"
The little girl tugged at Alex's sleeve, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she looked at him, one hand pointing at the scenery quickly passing by the window.
"That's right. This is the big city, New York!" Alex nodded, offering a gentle smile. "You'll be living here from now on, Vanessa."
"Mm!" The girl, called Vanessa, smiled brightly in response.
Vanessa Amelia—this was the name her parents had given her.
It was said that her parents were mutants as well, but the villagers, fearing their power, secretly drugged and kidnapped their entire family, before dousing their house with gasoline. As the fire engulfed their home, her parents used their final strength to send her to safety miles away, while they were consumed by the flames.
Having never left home and with little understanding of her powers, Vanessa wandered through Canada, surviving on scraps, until she encountered Alex in the alley...
After hearing about her tragic backstory, Alex could no longer have the heart to send her away. Given her terrible past, it would be too callous of him to abandon her now. Moreover, she had already been lucky enough not to fall into the hands of human traffickers; if he left her now, she might end up sold to some isolated mountain village, and Alex could never forgive himself for that.
