Chapter 52: Subjugating the 7th Lower Demon[3]
The shadows writhed like living things as the walls of Dravokh's Estate seemed to close in around Adrian and his team. The massive chamber, already heavy with corruption, began to pulse with dark energy.
From his throne of twisted obsidian, Dravokh, the Seventh Seat of the Lower Demons, rose to his full height. His crimson eyes glowed like embers, locking onto Adrian with a mixture of disdain and amusement.
"You will regret stepping into my domain," he growled, his voice vibrating through the stone itself. "Face my children and fall."
The demon snapped his clawed fingers.
A chilling sound filled the chamber—like a thousand skittering insects. From the cracks in the walls and the dark recesses of the room, Dravokh's minions surged forward, grotesque creatures of shadow and flesh. They snarled and screeched, their glowing eyes like pinpricks of red in the dark.
Adrian's pulse quickened as the first wave came crashing toward them. The ground trembled under the sheer number of beasts, their claws scraping against the stone floor.
"Seraphina, shields now!" Adrian barked, stepping into a defensive stance.
"On it!" Seraphina shouted, slamming her staff into the ground. A shimmering golden barrier burst outward, encircling the team just as the swarm struck. Creatures rebounded off the shield, clawing and snarling, but the barrier held—for now.
"The shield's not going to last long," Seraphina said, sweat beading on her brow. "There's too many of them!"
Adrian's sword flared to life with his aura as he turned to the others. "Then we fight through! We break their numbers and find Dravokh!"
The shield cracked as the creatures hurled themselves at it, their feral growls drowning out all other sounds. When the barrier shattered, Adrian charged forward.
"Push through! Don't let them overwhelm us!"
Adrian led the way, his sword cutting clean arcs through the swarm. His strikes glowed with faint blue energy, cleaving creatures into smoke and shadow. But the minions were relentless. For every beast that fell, two more seemed to rise in its place.
To his right, Lucas danced through the chaos with his twin blades. His movements were precise, his strikes a flurry of silver as he wove between enemies. "These things are endless!" Lucas called, his voice taut with frustration.
Kiera, the druid, stood further back, her hands outstretched as roots and vines erupted from the ground, snaring demons in place. "Then we make them stop moving!" she shouted, her face flushed with exertion. The vines writhed like serpents, crushing beasts under their weight.
"Stay close!" Seraphina called, her staff glowing as she flung bursts of purifying light at clusters of demons. Wherever the light struck, the creatures screeched in agony before disintegrating.
Kael, perched atop a fallen pillar, loosed arrow after arrow, his eyes sharp and focused. "Don't let them group up! I'll cover the flanks!" Each shot struck with deadly precision, buying the team precious moments to advance.
But even as they fought, Adrian could see Dravokh retreating further into the chamber, his mocking laughter echoing like a taunt.
"I'm going after him!" Adrian yelled, slicing through another demon.
Lucas glanced at him, panting. "You'll never reach him alone!"
"I don't plan to!" Adrian shot back. "Mohan's group will be here soon. Hold this line until they arrive—I'll deal with Dravokh!"
Before Lucas could argue, Adrian broke free of the group, charging toward the demon's retreating form. His sword flared brighter, his aura pulsing as he cut a path through the horde.
"Adrian, wait!" Seraphina called, her voice strained, but he was already gone.
Back at the center of the battle, the team began to falter. The swarm pressed harder, their numbers unrelenting. Kiera grunted as her vines were torn apart by sheer force. Lucas spun, slicing through enemies, but his movements were slowing.
"Seraphina!" Kael shouted from his perch. "We need that barrier again!"
Seraphina nodded, planting her staff into the stone and chanting through gritted teeth. A burst of golden energy erupted, creating a second shield that pushed the swarm back.
"Hold on," Seraphina muttered, her voice shaking. "Just hold on."
At that moment, a familiar voice roared through the chaos.
"Hold the line! We're here!"
From the far end of the chamber, Captain Mohan and the rest of Team 1 charged into the fray. Mohan's gauntlets crackled with energy as he smashed into the horde, his shockwaves scattering the demons like leaves in the wind.
Lucas grinned through his exhaustion. "Took you long enough, old man!"
Mohan smirked. "Thought you kids could handle it." He threw a punch that sent three demons crashing into the wall. "Looks like I was wrong!"
Kael loosed another volley of arrows, his focus renewed. "With you here, we might actually make it out alive!"
Meanwhile, Adrian pursued Dravokh deeper into the estate. The chamber narrowed into a tunnel, the air growing colder, heavier, with every step.
Dravokh's laughter echoed ahead, taunting him. "Still chasing me, boy? Do you really think you can defeat me alone?"
Adrian gritted his teeth, refusing to slow down. "I don't care how strong you are. I'm not letting you walk away."
Emerging into a smaller chamber, Adrian skidded to a stop. Dravokh stood waiting for him, his hulking figure bathed in the eerie glow of corrupted runes etched into the walls.
"You're bold," Dravokh sneered, flexing his clawed hands. "But that's not enough."
Adrian raised his sword, his aura flaring brighter than before. "I've faced worse than you, Dravokh. I won't let your kind poison this land any longer."
Dravokh tilted his head, his crimson eyes narrowing. "We'll see how long that fire of yours burns."
Back in the main chamber, Mohan and the others fought tooth and nail to contain the horde. The swarm's numbers had begun to dwindle, but the fight had taken its toll.
Mohan smashed another group of demons into dust, panting heavily. "We're running out of time! Adrian better be finishing this!"
Lucas, his blades bloodied, called back, "He'll do it. We just need to hold!"
Seraphina collapsed to her knees, the light of her staff flickering. "I… I can't keep this shield up much longer."
Kael fired his last arrow, his expression grim. "Then we'll buy him the time he needs with whatever we have left."
The team rallied, their exhaustion forgotten as they held the line against the final remnants of the swarm.
